Summary : An ASCII art GFX library
Description :
AA-lib is a low level gfx library just as many other libraries are.

linux boots with a nice penguin logo at secondary display (yes! Like
Win95 does:) AA-lib API is designed to be similar to other graphics
libraries. Learning a new API would be a piece of cake!

Summary : A curses-based apt frontend
Description :
Aptitude is a curses-based apt frontend with a number of useful extended
features, including: a mutt-like syntax for matching packages in a flexible and
extreme flexibility and customization.
Some command line usage for 'apt' without using Aptitude I've
learnt, and to bring you up-to-date with a cool Debian like
'feel' - can be used like this, within aLinux:
[Most of these techniques are simplified for first time users]
apt-get update (updates and/or builds the repository cache)
apt-get upgrade (I always run this firstly to set most vitals)
apt-get dist-upgrade (good run after the 'upgrade' secondary)
apt-get install xrick (installs application xrick)
apt-get remove xrick (removes application xrick)
apt-get install xrick chromium- toppler- XParticles+ (installs
xrick & XParticles while removing chromium & toppler all in one).
[Check this out - save ya on typing chars. Yes, wild cards!]
apt-get install xri* toppl*- XParti*- perl-Ext*-
You would think the above removes xrick, etc .. but now your
about to start understanding the power of apt. See for yourself.
Note, think of apt like a database for every file and package
on your system. It understands *everything*. You can use it
like this even. Say your doing something and all of a sudden
the prgram tells you your missing a file ..lets take '/bin/arch'
for instance. "'/bin/arch' not found" - hmm, now what package
could /bin/arch be from... no need to google, 'apt' knows :)
apt-get install /bin/arch (wow 'util-linux' cool.)
apt-get install /usr/lib/somelib.so (that's missing or remove
it replacing 'install' with 'remove'. (Installs or Removes
the entire package contents of /usr/lib/somelib.so)
apt-shell (command line shell - self explanatory)
apt-get moo (cute Cow - "Have you mooed today?" :)
For the complete index manual for endless apt usage, see
http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man8/apt-get.8.html
NOTE: Using Aptitude - Aptitude is nicer Graphical front-end
to APT - Saves us issuing commands described above. Now, when
using Aptitude - it's another powerfull tool that takes a
while to learn but becomes a breeze when used properly. Saves
us precious time on updates and upgrading in a mouse point &
click tradition. Another small note, aptitude is not as stable
as Synaptic, but it is a little more powerfull then Synaptic.

support for other non English languages. Aspell also doubles as a
powerful C++ library with C and Perl interfaces in the works.
Aspell is a new drop in replacment of the old Ispell which both depend
on Pspell.

This Audio File Library is an implementation of the SGI Audio File

tasks. This library allows the processing of audio data to and from
audio files of many common formats (currently AIFF, AIFC, WAVE, and
NeXT/Sun).

will depend upon the behavior of bash 1.14, which is included in the
bash1 package. Bash is the default shell for Red Hat Linux. It is
popular and powerful, and you'll probably end up using it.

Else follow this:
You are using the b43 driver from linux-2.6.25 or newer
Follow these instructions if you are using the b43 driver from linux-2.6.25 or compat-wireless-2.6, or from any current GIT tree.
Use version 013 of b43-fwcutter.
Download, extract the b43-fwcutter tarball and build it:
wget http://bu3sch.de/b43/fwcutter/b43-fwcutter-013.tar.bz2
tar xjf b43-fwcutter-013.tar.bz2
cd b43-fwcutter-013
make
cd ..Use version 4.178.10.4 of Broadcom's proprietary driver.
Download and extract the firmware from this driver tarball:
export FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR="/lib/firmware"
wget http://mirror2.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2
tar xjf broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2
cd broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4/driver
sudo ../../b43-fwcutter-013/b43-fwcutter -w "$FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR" wl_apsta_mimo.o
Legacy use broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz plus http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o then:
b43-fwcutter-013/b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o
Or:
bcm43xx-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware/ bcmwl5.sys
Edit /etc/modprobe.conf; add
alias wlan0 bcm43xx
Different distributions use different directories to load firmware from.
If the driver complains about missing firmware files look for the correct
directory. For some distributions you have to use /lib/hotplug/firmware
or /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware but other directories are also possible.

Bison is a general purpose parser generator which converts a grammar
description for an LALR context-free grammar into a C program to parse
that grammar. Bison can be used to develop a wide range of language
parsers, from ones used in simple desk calculators to complex
programming languages. Bison is upwardly compatible with Yacc, so any
correctly written Yacc grammar should work with Bison without any
changes. If you know Yacc, you shouldn't have any trouble using Bison
(but you do need to be very proficient in C programming to be able to
use Bison). Many programs use Bison as part of their build process.
Bison is only needed on systems that are used for development.

Summary : A GNU archiving program.
Description :
GNU cpio copies files into or out of a cpio or tar archive. Archives
are files which contain a collection of other files plus information
about them, such as their file name, owner, timestamps, and access
permissions. The archive can be another file on the disk, a magnetic
tape, or a pipe. GNU cpio supports the following archive formats: binary,
old ASCII, new ASCII, crc, HPUX binary, HPUX old ASCII, old tar and POSIX.1
tar. By default, cpio creates binary format archives, so that they are
compatible with older cpio programs. When it is extracting files from
archives, cpio automatically recognizes which kind of archive it is reading
and can read archives created on machines with a different byte-order.
Install cpio if you need a program to manage file archives.

Group : Libraries Source RPM: cracklib-2.7-1.src.rpm
Size : 11899533 License: Artistic
Packager : linuxkid
URL : http://sourceforge.net/projects/cracklib/
Summary : Password checking library
Description :
CrackLib tests passwords to determine whether they match certain
security-oriented characteristics. You can use CrackLib to stop users
from choosing passwords which would be easy to guess. CrackLib
performs certain tests:
- It tries to generate words from a username and gecos entry and
checks those words against the password;
- It checks for simplistic patterns in passwords;
- It checks for the password in a dictionary.
CrackLib is actually a library containing a particular C function
which is used to check the password, as well as other C functions.
CrackLib is not a replacement for a passwd program; it must be used in
conjunction with an existing passwd program.
Install the cracklib package if you need a program to check users'
passwords to see if they are at least minimally secure. If you install
CrackLib, you'll also want to install the cracklib-dicts package.
Standard dictionaries (/usr/dict/words)
The cracklib package includes the CrackLib dictionaries.
CrackLib will need to use the dictionary appropriate to your system,
which is normally put in /usr/dict/words. Cracklib-dicts also
contains the utilities necessary for the creation of new dictionaries.

Crystal is a kwin window decoration theme, which offers you (pseudo)
TRANSPARENT titlebar, buttons and borders. Check out my screenshots!
It also has some little usuability enhancements.
Main features:
* The style grabs your wallpaper and uses it as the deco background.
It has several blending modes, i.e. it can fade the background into
the defined title bar color, or it can brighten or darken the wallp
aper, as well as blur the source image to simulate glass.
* Choose the blending color of the buttons.
* You can define the title bar height and border size of the windows.
* Right click on minimize button toggles shade mode.
* Middle click on minimize button sends window to below.
* Double click on program symbol closes window.
* Support for button themes. Basic button theme is included, feel free to swamp me with cool themes.
* Can show a tooltip of the caption
* Mouse-wheel on the title bar to 'scroll' to all opened windows of the same desktop.
Disadvantages:
- Crystal needs KDE >=3.2 and QT>=3.2.
- May be very slow and memory consuming.
- Don't forget to breathe, while drooling.

Summary : A version control system.
Description :
CVS (Concurrent Version System) is a version control system which can
record the history of your files (usually, but not always, source
code). CVS only stores the differences between versions, instead of
every version of every file you've ever created. CVS also keeps a log
of who, when and why changes occurred.
CVS is very helpful for managing releases and controlling the
concurrent editing of source files among multiple authors. Instead of
providing version control for a collection of files in a single
directory, CVS provides version control for a hierarchical collection
of directories consisting of revision controlled files. These
directories and files can then be combined together to form a software
release.
Install the cvs package if you need to use a version control system.

can then be layered on top of the full backup. Single files and
directory subtrees may also be restored from full or partial backups.

restoring filesystems after backups.

Summary : Foomatic Printer Database.
Description :
Foomatic is a comprehensive, spooler-independent database of printers,
printer drivers, and driver descriptions. It contains utilities to
generate driver description files and printer queues for CUPS, LPD,
LPRng, and PDQ using the database. There is also the possibility to
read the PJL options out of PJL-capable laser printers and take them
into account at the driver description file generation.
There are spooler-independent command line interfaces to manipulate
queues (foomatic-configure) and to print files/manipulate jobs
(foomatic printjob).
The site http://www.linuxprinting.org/ is based on this database.
'cups-genppdupdate' to update gutenprint ppd's if you dont want to wait
for a full foomatic-compiledb build.
Unlike with the CUPS native driver, there is no simple way to update all
PPD files when you install a new version of Gutenprint. You must either
use the 'foomatic-ppdfile' command to upgrade PPD files individually, or
'foomatic-compiledb' to build all PPD files which aLinux uses.

Summary : Foomatic/Gutenprint/Ghostscript/IJS and CUPS print drivers.
Description :
This package is really deprecated as its not really needed anymore
since it contains only a handfull of drivers. The regular foomatic

needed using http://localhost:631 or KDE's print management. Will
just keep this around for the time being - sentimental perhaps :)

Summary : Truetype font rasterizer
Description :
The FreeType engine is a free and portable TrueType font rendering
engine. It has been developed to provide TrueType support to a great
variety of platforms and environments.
Note that FreeType is a *library*. It is not a font server for your
favorite platform, even though it was designed to be used in many of
them. Note also that it is *not* a complete text-rendering library.
Its purpose is simply to open and manage font files, as well as load,
hint and render individual glyphs efficiently. You can also see it as
a "TrueType driver" for a higher-level library, though rendering text
with it is extremely easy, as demo-ed by the test programs.

code will need modification to call or gdImageJpeg instead of
gdImageGif. Note: (If you want GIF support get gd-1.8.4 with patches).
This library allows you to easily create and manipulate PNG, JPEG
image files from your C programs.

Summary : GLE Tubing and Extrusion Library
Description :
GLE is a library package of C functions that draw extruded surfaces,
including surfaces of revolution, sweeps, tubes, polycones,
polycylinders and helicoids. Generically, the extruded surface is
specified with a 2D polyline that is extruded along a 3D path. A
local coordinate system allows for additional flexibility in the
primitives drawn. Extrusions may be texture mapped in a variety of
ways. The GLE library generates 3D triangle coordinates, lighting
normal vectors and texture coordinates as output. GLE uses the GL or
OpenGL API's to perform the actual rendering.

Summary : A GNU arbitrary precision library.
Description :
The gmp package contains GNU MP, a library for arbitrary precision
arithmetic, signed integers operations, rational numbers and floating
point numbers. GNU MP is designed for speed, for both small and very
large operands. GNU MP is fast because it uses fullwords as the basic
arithmetic type, it uses fast algorithms, it carefully optimizes
assembly code for many CPUs' most common inner loops, and it generally
emphasizes speed over simplicity/elegance in its operations.
Install the gmp package if you need a fast arbitrary precision
library.
