Hello !
Could anyone tell me if the new Mac OS 8.0 will run on non-Power PC machines ?
I have a Centris 650 that I would like to upgrade from System 7.1;
therefore, I would appreciate knowing if it is worth to wait OS 8.0 or if
OS 7.6 is my last chance of upgrade.
Thanks in advance for your feedback.

You want WebFree, assuming that you're using OpenTransport.

I don't have a URL handy, but an AltaVista search on "webfree" should turn
it up.

We use UShare on Suns for that purpose. It works reasonably well but
sometimes the DeskTop databases get corrupted. There is also the Columbia
Appletalk Package (CAP), but that seems a real pain to install and
configure properly (I have no personal experience with it, though). Rather
than running AppleTalk on a Unix machine, you might opt for running MacNFS
on the Mac (again, I have no experience with it and if I remember correctly
was fairly pricy).

The most elegant and stable solution seems the Xinet software that comes by
default on the SGI O2's. Even in demo mode one can mount Unix disks on the
Mac for an hour. It also allows one to mount Mac disks on the SGI (15
minutes in demo mode) and to print to AppleTalk printers from the SGI. I
have not tried printing, but the disk mounting between Mac and SGI works
like a charm.

Hope this helps,

Already my third mail to the digest today! I am turning into a real Al
Bloom here, albeit not of the funny persuasion <g>.

I thank Bill Moore, Chuck Garrett, Daly Jessup, Mark Nagata, Chip McGregor
and A Brody for their useful responses. Suggestions were: PopupFolder,
Greg's Browser, TitlePop and Hierarchy. PopupFolder and Greg's Browser are
overkill for what I want. Indeed, Hierarchy was what I had been looking
for, but .... when I tried out the freeware TitlePop 2.4.2, I found it a
great little utility for getting instant access to all open windows in all
applications from any window's title bar! The only problem is that TitlePop
and Hierarchy seem mutually exclusive and I do not really want to give up
TitlePop. So, I hope that Jouko Pakkanen, author of TitlePop will modify
this handy tool a bit in that one can choose a modifier key combination to
invoke the popup menu so that I can use both TitlePop and Hierarchy. Just
this moment I found out that a much improved TitlePop 3.0 has been released
(check out: <http://www.datavasara.fi/titlepop/>), but I have not tried it
yet.

For a while now I have been looking for a good thesaurus programme, a
stand alone utiltiy that I can just pop open when the need arises and type
a word into. Does anyone know of a programme like this. I can't recall
ever coming across one, however it appears strange to me that one would
not exist.

I would be forever greatful if anyone could inform me about such a
utility, shareware prefered however if need be I will invest in a
commercial programme.

MacWrite Pro runs on the latest Macs. It uses Claris' XTND translators
to access other file formats. Claris has an XTND for MacWrite 5.0; don't
know if this works with still older versions. The Claris XTND can be
used in any XTND-capable application, as for example ClarisWorks.

Hope this helps. Best wishes, Christian.

Greetings all,

This is a new one for me. My boss can't seem to open Word 6.0 files by
double clicking on the icon any more. When we double click on the file,
Word is brought to the front, but won't open the files. Once inside Word,
however, we can open the files using the file:open command. We've tried on
floppies, his hard drive, and the network server and none of them work.
Any ideas or suggestions??

This may or may not be related to other damage IE wreaks on your Mac:

Look at your Internet Config file mapping prefs: the IE Virus(tm) added a
zillion entries that all point back to IE. To return everything to its
proper creator and icon, you'll have to laboriously delete these entries
one at a time in Internet Config, then rebuild your desktop. IE seems to
reinstate the unwanted changes every time it launches, too, so the best
prevention is dragging the IE folder to the trash, and good riddance.

Subject: Info-Mac Digest V15 #134

I recently subscribed to the list for the Info-Mac Digest. I did this
reluctantly because I didn't wish to add to your burden of supplying
Digests by e-mail, but it was the only way I could find to obtain them
reliably since the Digest is no longer being mirrored at any of the
archives I have checked (not even the MIT HyperArchive).

I have found a problem with #134 and another recent Digest. During the
display of the abstract of one of Chris Li's translations of software
to Japanese, the text changes over to an undecipherable group of
graphics characters. Only numbers are readable. These graphics
persist for all succeeding abstracts in that Digest and, in fact, any
further use of my computer (Mac Centris 610) acting as a terminal for
our company's Unix workstation, on which I am using elm to read my
mail. The terminal-emulation program I use is VersaTerm Pro, the
latest version. The only way I can restore normal behavior is to give
the command Reset Terminal in VTPro.

Subject: LaserWriter LS problem

I'd appreciate any advice on this problem:

I have a Personal LaserWriter LS which does not
start up properly. When it is switched on, the
green ready light comes on immediately and is
steady, i.e., it doesn't blink. Before, when
the printer was turned on, the middle orange
light would come on first, blink for a few
seconds, and then the green light would come
on, blink for a few seconds and then become
steady, indicating it was ready to print.

The funny thing is that the printer still works,
even though the startup procedure is altered,
except that it won't print envelopes now, only
flat sheets of paper and 8 1/2 x ll inch labels
(a heavier stock).

Another thing: while printing, an ominous
clicking sound comes from the front corner of
the printer where the indicator lights are
located. Does anyone know what this all means?

TIA -- Larry

I too have not been able to find any back issues later than v15-086. I have
note seen any reply to Ian's query nor have I received a response to the

[You are so right. The digests are not lost. The problem is I've not
written the script to move the digests from the production area into the
archives. I know it seems like a trivial exercise, but it isn't as simple
as it sounds. It really needs about 2 hours of my time. I'll get to it as

Doesn't this sound more like a problem with FreePPP? I also have a 6100,
7.6.1, OT 1.1.2, and Netscape 3.0, but I use Apple's OT PPP 1.0 instead

there seem to be a few serious software and or disk problems, so as a first
start i'd like to reinitialize the disk and reinstall 7.53 or 7.55. Do i
need any special drivers from powercomputing? or is it really a mac?

next, they are working on a novell ethernet network. the mac is physically

anything else you think i need to know about this machine?

The WebFree control panel will prevent GIF89a animations from repeating
(they'll still play one time) under Netscape 3.0. I haven't tried it with
Netscape 2.0. With 4.01, sometimes it works, sometimes not. It works by
filtering the incoming modem stream, and can also suppress blinking text,
cookies, and tags containing text from an editable list (e.g., ad
banners).
