Subject: [*] Reanimator 1.0.1

Reanimator 1.0.1.

What's Reanimator?

Reanimator is a utility for automatically restarting all applications
and background-only processes killed by another process. A process is a
program running on your Mac. When you launch an application, you start a
new process. Desk accessories are also processes, while control panels
are treated as extensions of the Finder process (see the "Technical
details" section in the read me file for further info). There are also
processes that don't show up when running: they are called
background-only processes. Many shareware and freeware extensions run
as background-only processes. Reanimator itself, works that way. I'm
used to run a number of applications and extensions in the background
(D=E9cor, MyEyes, DragThing, Eudora and other occasional utilities) and I
was tired of relaunching each one of them after running an installer,
rebuilding the desktop using a dedicated utility or running a game
instructed to quit all other processes, including the Finder. Reanimator
accomplishes this task in a single, quick operation.

What's new in 1.0.1?

    - Recompiled with CodeWarrior=AE Professional 1.
    - Fixed B&W icons in both application and daemon.
    - Fixed a bug that caused the application not to properly recognize the
absence of the folder named "Reanimator =9F" in the Preferences folder.
    - Now Reanimator handles all kinds of applications, including new kinds
of Control Panel items and Apple Menu items (see the "Technical details"
section in the Read Me file).
    - Now aliases created by the daemon have the correct Finder file types.
    - The application's settings dialog is now movable.
    - Improved error checking and handling.
    - A few minor cosmetic enhancements.
    - Added a "Technical details" section to the Read Me file.

System Requirements
68020/030/040 or PowerPC;
64 KBytes free memory;
Mac OS 7.0 or later.

Distribution
You can distribute Reanimator freely, provided that you leave the
software and the accompanying documentation unchanged. You can include
Reanimator in CD-ROMs and other software collections only by previous
agreement. Reanimator is FREEWARE, i.e., free of charge. However, it's
NOT public domain software.

Couple of things to check, in the TCP/IP Control Panel:
  1) Make sure you have the correct settings for Connect via. In our
current ARA setup, the server assigns the IP#:
	Connect via: AppleTalk (MacIP0
	configure: Using MacIP Server
IP Address: <will be supplied by server>

In a previous setup, we used assigned IPs, but only between .225 and
.256, e.g. 199.56.164.225.

Make sure your subnet mask, Router address, and Name server addresses are
all correct.

Click on the "Options" button and make sure the "Active" box is checked
in the dialog. I had a lot of problems with the "Load when needed" feature
which were resolved when I changed it to "Active"

  2) Are you using OT 1.1.2? It seems much more reliable and a free upgrade.

  3) Assuming the ARA connection is working fine otherwise, get your sys
admin to recycle the AppleTalk <-> Ethernet link (e.g. Gatorbox)

good luck

[snip]

I just received my 8MB card (AMD series D) from Hamilton Hallmark (got
their toll free phone number from the AMD web page on nonvolatile (aka
'flash') memory. It was $191 + a whopping $22 for UPS ground shipping. I
guess that's what I get for going closer to the source. So far all I've
done is initialize the card. The MP2K had no complaints.

The Apple labelled 4MB card I have is an Intel Series 2 flash card. Intel
has a newer Series 2 Plus set of cards that shares a power use
characteristic with the AMD series D cards: they use the same amount of
power for word wide (2 bytes at a time) read/write operations as they do
for single byte at a time operations. And that power use is a little less
than the old cards use for single byte operations. If the Newt uses word
wide operations, the new cards will use about half as much power as the
older cards. I haven't figured out how to tell if my excursion into Intel
and AMD tech sheets has done me any good...

The AMD D series are 5V only (AMD web page claims that means any Newton OS
2.x device). The Intel 2 Plus are automagically 3.3, 5, or 12V cards --
meaning they'll work with any Newton.

I couldn't find the quote, but I believe Apple said the MP2K didn't support
cards bigger than 10MB. However, I'm pretty sure I've seen folks in
comp.sys.newton.?? talk about using 20MB cards successfully. The Newtons do
slow down with larger memory cards (it all acts like system memory in that
regard, rather than bulk storage).

A couple places to try for memory card purchasing: ClubPDA or PDADirect.

Time to load some Landware fonts...

Subject: [Q] Virtual PC - using Token Ring Card?

Hello all,

As much as I know how to use/break Windows95 (I'm an instructor)...
Connectix's documentation for its Virtual PC is extremely sketchy for
anyone trying to do something that is a little out of the norm - like use
a Token Ring card in his Mac instead of the built in Ethernet. They claim
as long as the Mac can use a device - the PC side should be able to use
it also.

Hold it! I'm an Evangelist in disguise as I have a Mac 6500/250 at work
and a PB5300c at home. My wife has a 7200/120 and an LCIII. The kicker in
every class is when the students finally ask me what kind of PC I'd
recommend... <big smile> "Well, I have a Mac at home..." and usually have
my Power Book to actually show them what it can do to dispel all those
pesky myths because I get all the typical objections of not enough
software, technology, Apple going out of business, etc... and even my 1
1/2 year old PB5300c is impressive enough to wow them. Apple really needs
to set the public record straight about its products, available software,
and technology. I digress...

Ok, my question is - has anyone managed to use Virtual PC on a Novell
network using a PCI or NuBus Token Ring card. I'd like to know how.
Connectix hasn't answered my e-mail.

Thanks,

Subject: [Q]MAC OS 8 and PC compatible Card

After having been put on hold for 3 1/2 hours, hung up on, and lied to by
various people at Apple's Tech Support (they also told me they have the
best tech support in the business) I now turn to this forum with the hope
that someone can help me.

Until about 24 hours ago I was the happy owner of Power Macintosh 7200/120
with a 12" 100 mhz pentium pc compatible card.

After having scurried all the literature I could find about a possible
incompatability, I took the plunge and installed Mac OS 8. Result: I can no
longer run the pc side of my computer. When I switch, I never get past the
first screen where the pc counts up the memory.

I tried to reinstall the compatability software (v.1.5) without success. I
read somewhere that there is a v.1.6 out, but one guy at apple said that it
was for the newer model only, and another guy there told me that it was
just what I needed and that I could download it from www.info.apple.com
where it doesn't exist.

In short, I am, at least for now, stuck with totally useless $1000 piece of
hardware that Apple apparently does not support. Has anyone out there had
similar problems, and is there a solution for it?

While the multimedia part of a ECD (Squirrel Nut Zippers, 'Hot') works

My computer plays regular audio CDs with no problem.

This ECD can be played and cycled on a CD player with no problem.

BUT to get this ECD to play on my Mac, I must launch the CD player (usually
audio CDs play when inserted), choose any track but the first and in the

The ECD will play straight through UNLESS I do something like launch or
quit an application, then it just stops and I have to start it again as
above.

The ECD will not cycle from the last track to the first, but will stop on
the last track. There is no problem with regular CDs.

The error message is "This operation could not be completed. Please be sure
you have loaded an audio CD and that the Apple CD-ROM drive has been

I have a Power Mac 7600 running 7.5.5 with 80MB of memory, all the

occurs when I restart with only 7.5.5 extentions.

Thanks in advance for any advice on how to play the ECD.

System reinstall was necessary.

Subject: Formating text in calculation field in FileMakerPro

Hi all,

I have a question: is there a way to format text in a calculation field in
FileMakerPro? It seems the output of the field is always plain text...
If anyone has an answer, please email me.
Thank you.

Try Virtual Disk by LaCie.

I there is a free lite version and a regular version.
I got the lite version with my Syquest EZFlyer 230.

Lou,

I've been seeing the same thing every time I re-arrange my bookmarks. I've
found that by immediately quitting Netscape and then re-launching it the
alphabetizing is removed and the order is back the way I had it. Messing
with the bookmarks before quitting will not let you revert it.

I've been frustrated by this "feature" and others (the download window
ALWAYS is in the upper left instead of where you move it to like Netscape 1
thru 3, and others). I've given the app 20mb memory and Java still causes
it to crash daily.

I have switched back to 3.01 where I have not had a problem in 2 days!!!

Subject: Q Looking for Mac check-out system

I'm looking for a Macintosh program that will manage the check-out (and
check-in) of photography equipment for our lab. I found a program to do
this on Windows quite some time ago and I'd use it, reluctantly, but I
can't find any mention of anything like this on the web on either platform
now.

Subject: Refresh rate

Many of Apple's monitors are multi-scan (meaning they can be set to many
different refresh rates), and 60-Hz is often one of the options.
Similarly, many inexpensive VGA monitors can be used (via a simple
adapter) with Macs, with, again, 60-Hz as an option. But, there is no
guarantee that the 60-Hz raster scan of the monitor will be synchronised
with that of the AC supply, so your problem may persist anyway.

Subject: Sound Manager question

Well. I feel sort of bad, because I ask a lot of Q's here, but have only
had the chance to help others with their Q's a few times. Sorry.

I have a very nifty program that emulates the operation of 2 Roland TB303
bass machines and 1 Roland TR808 drum machine. It outputs it's sound
through the Sound Manager, the version of which is 3.2.1 on my PowerMac
7500/150/48MBram/System 7.6.1. My Mac has a stereo 1/8" output, and left
and right RCA outputs. I get sound out of my little lame-o 1/8" plug, but
not my RCA outputs. Is there any way to do get sound out of the RCA plugs?
My Monitors and Sound control panel doesn't list any alternatives for
output aside from the unchangeable "Built In", unlike the input, which has
more than one option. Well, blah, this bums me out. Sure the 1/8" plug
WORKS, but I'd much rather plug the RCAs into my mixer for ouput. Anybody
know much about this Sound Manager stuff? Thanks mucho...
