Subject: 9.0.4 file sharing perpetually starting, never starts

All of a sudden my file sharing won't complete the start-up process:
the file-sharing icons in the control strip and the control panel flash
continuously. Initially, the disk churns for a while, but then ceases.
It stays on starting up, and in that state it is not accessible from
other computers, nor can I set sharing status. Program sharing does
start normally.

Otherwise, the computer runs just fine.

This is an iMac DV SE under 9.0.4 with Software Update running weekly,
connected via EnterNet DSL. This worked until the last couple of
weeks, and I can't think of what I've changed that might affect it.
I've tried trashing the File Sharing CP Prefs. Any other suggestions?
Cheers,

Subject: [*] 8-ball x.1 submission

This Mac application puts a pool table on your screen and lets you shoot the
balls down the pockets.

Unlike other pool table applications, you can set the table and balls to any
size you wish. There are hundreds of settings available for speed
and friction. The Aim Assist feature shows you which direction and how far
the cue ball will go when you shoot. Shot Status information is
provided, like a referee, to show whose turn it is, whether they've made a
legal shot, whether a player has won the game, etc., according to rules
for either 8Ball or 9Ball.

To see what sets 8-Ball Emulator apart from the rest, try minimum ball size
and friction settings.

Full documentation is available thru the 'Save Help Text' button in the Help
dialog.

This script allows you to change the search URL in Internet
Explorer. After it is changed, automatic search queries will be sent
to the new search engine.

You can search by typing "?" or "search" followed by your search
terms into the URL text field at the top of the browser window.
The "Tanaka's osax" Scripting Addition is required. Download it,
unstuff and drop onto the closed "System Folder".

Then just drag and drop Internet Explorer's program icon onto the
icon of this script.

Subject: [*] FileBuddy 6.0.4J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the FileBuddy package.

File Buddy is quite simply the most powerful and popular high-level file
utility available for your Macintosh.

File Buddy 6 requires a PowerPC-based Macintosh with System 7.6 or
later. File Buddy 5 is available for 68K Macintoshes.

*View and edit a wide range of file and folder information in the info
 window.
*Create droplet applications that automatically apply changes to items
dropped on them, including the contents of folders.
*Find files and folders using an extensive set of search criteria.
Enhance file searches with plug-ins that extend file search capabilities.
Conveniently perform a wide variety of actions on found items. Make File
Buddy your default file finding application using the File Buddy CP
 control panel.
*Modify the names of multiple files at once. For example, remove ".txt"
from the names of a group of files.
 *Much, much more...

 Changes & Fixes:
*The duplicate file selection dialog (accessed from the file list window)
is no longer modal. As a direct consequence, the online help opens to the
correct page when the help button is clicked in that dialog.
*Moved buttons at the bottom of the Questionable Preferences window to
the upper right corner to be consistent with other windows.
*Minor changes to the code to better accommodate translations to other
 languages.
*Alerts now allow switching to other applications unless displayed as the
 result of a drag operation.
*Fixed a bug that could cause a crash when the Find window was opened and
no searches had ever been done.
*The Find and Cancel buttons in the Find Duplicates in Selection dialog
 now respond to keyboard input.
*Some fixes to address problems in OS 8.1. Some problems still remain for
 some users.
*Fixed a problem that could cause File Buddy to hang when you tried to
add a column to a file list.
*Fixed a problem that would keep the help from opening if the Help folder
is removed from the File Buddy Support folder.
*Alerts displayed as a result of a drag operation don't allow switching
to other applications to prevent crashing.
*Editing version strings in the info window would cause a crash. Fixed.
*Fixed a couple of other minor issues.

Subject: [*] Screen Catcher 2.2 - screen capture utility with "Catch-All"

This is the latest release of Screen Catcher. Screen Catcher 2.2
should replace any previous English-language versions of Screen
Catcher in the archives.

Screen Catcher is a full-featured, scriptable screen capture
application. It is capable of taking snapshots of screen images and
saving them as PICT, GIF, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, PNG, Photoshop, SGI,
MacPaint, TGA, and QuickTime files. It also allows images to be
captured to the clipboard or to Screen Catcher's own windows, where
they can manipulated to change the color palette or reduce the number
of colors in the image before copying or saving.

Screen Catcher also includes a "Catch-All" mode, which automatically
scrolls the contents of windows to capture an entire document or web
page, even if it's too long to fit on the screen.

Version 2.2 offers many more file formats when QuickTime 4 or higher
is installed, is fully compatible with Mac OS 9.1, and fixes a number
of compatibility issues with specific applications. A full list of
changes can be found at:

	<http://www.stclairsoft.com/ScreenCatcher/release.html>

Screen Catcher will operate on any Macintosh running System 7 or
higher, including Mac OS 9.1, and is $25 shareware. More information

States3000 v1.02 Released!

<URL:http://www.winograd.com>

Merrimack, New Hampshire, January 26, 2001: Ken Winograd and Space-Time
Associates announced today the release of version 1.02 of a fun
Macintosh shareware game called States3000. States3000 is a new take on
the classic hangman word guessing game we all played when we were kids.
It's the easiest way to learn about all 50 US States. It features
colorful, non-violent graphics, digitized sounds, synthesized speech,
State pictures and information, and special options especially designed
for visually challenged users.

Version 1.02 of States3000 fixes a bug that prevented the program from
running if the user didn't have certain libraries installed. This
version also fixes a bug that could occur when certain dialogs appeared.
Some cosmetic changes were also added.

States3000 requires a Macintosh (PPC-only.)

I donłt understand your problem right, I think. For this, most HTML
editors allow you to upload the changed pages to the server (even
HomePage included this feature). But when you change your pages, you
yourself know best, which pages you have changed, and so you can also
use your favourite ftp application.

Subject: JavaScript no longer works in IE

Fortunately I have Netscape, but, still ...

Problem:
Sometime around January 23 (based on my Java logs), JavaScript rollovers
and links no longer work in IE (5.0, 4.5, 4.1). They do work in Netscape
(6.0, 4.7, 4.5). Since I design and test web pages in all the browsers I
need this corrected. The pages I have been using worked on January 22.
There are no error messages at all. JavaScripted rollovers do not change.
Links using JavaScript just do nothing. My bank's pages which require
JavaScript to log in just show a blank page.

Corrective actions taken:

1. In IE 4.5 tried running with Apple MRJ, Microsoft Java, neither. In IE
5.0, tried running with MRJ or nothing.

2. Rebuilt the desktop

3. Zapped the PRAM

4. Reinstalled Apple MRJ (and upgraded to 2.2.4)

5. Ran Microsoft Internet First Run from Microsoft Internet Self-Repair folder

6. Removed all preference from Preferences folder relating to IE that I
could find

7. Downloaded new copy of IE 5.0 (had to use Netscape due to the java links
at Microsoft)

8. Upgraded MacOS 8.6 -> 9.0 -> 9.1

Don't know where to go from here. Conflict Catcher, TechTool and Apple's
Disk First Aid all show no problems with the system folder and its
contents. Running Conflict Catcher has been of no help. When I lock off the
required files for Explorer, the problem exists and Conflict Catcher
reports that the problem is not with the files it can control, so it must
be with the locked files. When I don't lock off the files, starting IE
installs them and the problem still exists.

The Final Kicker:
When I start up from a drive in my media bay, one running 8.6, or one
running 9.04, the problem is gone. When I replace the files (extensions and
control panels) on my internal drive
related to IE with those from either external drive, and start from the
internal drive, the problem is back.

(Current) System details:

PB G3 266
192 mb RAM
MacOS 9.1
IE 5.0 has 18 mb as perferred, 9 as minimum (4 is the recommended)

Subject: Location Manager won't open "Modem" & "Remote Access"

Powerbook G3 Bronze (1999 Lombard), OS 9.04, 384 MB RAM, VM off.

Normally, Apple Location Manager allows simple access to most of the
individual components that can be "switched". So, for instance, if
I'm setting up a new location and changing AppleTalk settings, I
could, from Location Manager, click "AppleTalk & TCP/IP" and tap the
"Edit" button. A dialog box then asks if I want to open either of
the Control Panels that control these settings and allows "Cancel",
"Apply", "Open AppleTalk" or "Open TCP/IP".

Everything else works fine but if I select the "Remote Access" module
and click "Edit", the "Cancel" and "Apply" can be clicked but "Open
Modem" and "Open ARA".are both dimmed and inaccessible.

Any ideas on why this might be? And a fix?

I can, of course, open the Control Panels in question normally, make
configuration changes, and use the Location Manager "Apply" button
thereafter. I just would like the streamlined functionality back...

My Performa 6200 has problems with its front controls, the grandchildren
have broken a pencil lead in the CD eject hole and one of the buttons on the
sound controls is stuck in.

For these reasons I want to remove the top cover to get at the back of the

However, I cannot fathom out how to get it off. I am used to Centris and
Power Mac G3 covers and the need to disengage the back upwards away from the
base, then slide the cover backwards to unlatch lugs at the front. But I
cannot work out how to disengage the back end of the top cover of the
Performa. I don't want to resort to brute force and prise the back free of
the base until I have consulted my fellow subscribers.

Cam anyone out there help me.

Subject: Problem with LCD display on wake up

Hi:

I've not seen this problem described in any forum and couldn't find
anything in archives. My PowerBook G3 Series (Wallstreet) has a 12" TFT
display (this was a limited edition; the original 12" displays were STN).
About once a day, when I wake it up from sleep mode, the display is
incredibly blurry (looks out of focus) and the text and images are
surrounded by pixels that move around the text/images like a movie marquee
(honestly). Rebooting clears the problem. I'd be grateful if anyone has
any idea what might cause this behavior...hopefully it's software, although
I'll bet not.

Many thanks,
Howard
