<<<<[snip] I have to disagree here, and disagree in public.
Multiple utilities
view disk fragmentation and other hard drive issues from different
points of view. What may be a bad btree to one utility may be a
perfectly solid directory structure. Your mileage may vary, but if
you are going to use utilities such as Norton, Techtools, and Disk
Warrior, use only one utility. Otherwise you may end up having a
hard drive "fixed" by one utility only to make another utility view
the drive as unreadable. [snip]>>>>

While I think the comment about different tools having different
views is valid, I have more often found this helpful rather than a
problem. On numerous occasions going back to Mactools and early
version of Norton, I found that one utility got stuck (either gave up
or repeatedly found and tried to fix the same error) and alternating
utilities actually solved the problems to everyone's satisfaction.
If fact, times that the utilities weren't all happy were times when
things would shortly go south again.

My two cents :-)

Subject: 9.1 and Function Keys

Greetings,

I am using Eudora Pro 4.3.3 and I have always used the function keys
mapped to the toolbar buttons feature
[Special->Settings->Toolbar->"Map Function Keys to Buttons"] Recently
I upgraded my PowerBook to MacOS 9.1. Since that time, the F1-F6
buttons work fine but the F7-F12 buttons no longer seem to map to
their respective functions. When I press one of them, I get a dialog
from the OS telling me that I "can set up the F7 through F15 keys in
the Keyboard control panel", yada, yada.

This does not seem to be a problem under MacOS 9.0.4.

Has anyone else seen this behavior and/or care to offer any
suggestions. (So far, Qualcomm tech support has not been much help)

TIA,

Subject: [*] CopyPaste 4.4.2J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the CopyPaste package.

CopyPaste is the shareware utility that was awarded a 5
mouse rating by MacUser and was their shareware utility of
the year 1996. Shareware Junkies declared it Mac Product
of the year for 1997. CopyPaste also appeared in the June 97
Wired and has been featured in MacWeek, TidBits, MacAddict and
many other magazines. CopyPaste magnifies the clipboard in many
different ways and has been declared indespensible by web developers,
editors, writers, dtp professionals and everyone who uses
the clipboard.

One of the early wonders of the Mac was its revolutionary ability to do
copy and paste across various applications. Unlike other areas in the Mac's
system software that have changed and progressed over the years, copying
and pasting has not evolved. How many times have you found yourself going
back and forth copying in one application and pasting in a different
application, wishing to yourself that you could copy 5-10 items at a time,
then go to another application and paste each of these items. Now you can
do not only this but view all 100 clipboards, save useful text and pictures
thru restarts and much much more.

**MacOS 9 compatible!
**Many advanced features but easy for beginners!
**Full Drag Drop compatibility!
**Use up to 100 independent clipboards by menu or simple key commands!
**View and access all the clipboard using the CopyPaste Palette!
**Append text to 1 of 10 files on disk at any time!
**Process text, picture and net data on the Clipboards in many ways!
**Use a command key to switch and/or view all applications!
**Pop-up palette function and more!
**Clip Recorder - remembers up to the last 200 items copied via
command c.
**Clip Archive - copied data is appended to one of 10 text
files on disk.
**Save Clipboards thru Restarts - allows all 100 Clipboards
to be saved thru Shutdown or Restart.

CopyPaste eliminates tedious repetitive work and increases
your ability to get the job done.

Subject: [*] Tex-Edit Plus 4.1J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the Tex-Edit Plus package.

Tex-Edit Plus is a scriptable, styled text editor that fills the gap
between Apple's bare-bones SimpleText and a full-featured word
processor. It's fast, efficient, and has a clean, uncluttered interface.
It's also great for cleaning up text which is transmitted over the
Internet.

Tex-Edit Plus features: PowerPC native (fat), extensive munging
abilities, unlimited file size, Drag&Drop support, AppleScript support,
Word Services support, Speech Manager support, picture handling, sound
handling, movie handling, ability to create SimpleText Read-Only
documents, and much more. System 7.0 or better required.

Tex-Edit Plus can read and write UTF-16 (unicode) text. The new file
format is fully backward compatible with previous versions.

Tex-Edit Plus supports unlimited undo and redo.

Each paragraph can be formatted individually. These new paragraph
settings include text justification (left, center, right, full), space
above, space below, left indent, right indent, first line indent (or
hanging outdent), and bottom border (in one of several line styles).
Each paragraph can also have its own line spacing (in one point
increments) and dominant text direction (useful for right-to-left
scripts).

NEW IN 4.1 -- Tex-Edit Plus 4.1 adds an "Open Recent" submenu to give
you quick access to your ten most recently opened documents. The new
"Normal Baseline" menu command allows you to conveniently remove all
super and subscripting.

The External Editor Protocol now allows Tex-Edit to act as a text editor
for an ftp client such as NetFinder. Tell NetFinder to "Edit with ((Text
Editor))". When Tex-Edit saves the document, the remote file is
automatically updated by NetFinder. Slick! (If your favorite ftp client
does not support the External Editor Protocol, please encourage its
authors to do so.)

Desktop clippings can now be "opened" in the same manner as real
documents (feature added by popular demand).

A bug noted when saving some unusual files to SimpleText and SimpleText
Read-Only formats was fixed. Multiple bugs involving AppleScript,
printing, and speech were fixed.

Subject: Freeze with time & date control panel under OS 9.1

I found a solution to the freeze with the time&date control panel under OS
9.1 (German Verision). On G3 blue/white machines and the iBook the system
might tell you on startup that the time zone is not correctly chosen. It
will show a date from decades ago with a time of 00:00 hours. On my iBook I
tried to correct time and date, which persistently lead to a freeze on
closing the control panel.

Apparently this occurrs on upgrading from OS 9.0.4 to OS 9.1, if the
formerly chosen time zone was not Berlin or Munich. In 9.1 there are less
cities to be chosen. Thus, if the time zone was some other than Berlin or
Munich, the system thinks that the selected time zone does not exist. To
avoid this problem just open the control panel, choose Berlin (even though
you might live in another German city) and you should not see this splash
screen on startup again.

If it doesn³t work, try zapping the P-RAM before.

I read in the DVD FAQ, <http://dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html>, that not all
DVD players are capable of reading dts surround and Dolby digital (AC3) 5.1
formats.

I have a Cube (G4/500) with the audio output to my stereo (via a Roland USB

buy a dts/AC3 decoder but there's not much point if the DVD-ROM cannot read
the digital surround tracks.

Does anyone know if it can.

Subject: OS9.1 install on 6100/60?

Coradeschi, Tom <tcora@pica.army.mil> asked;

> Has anyone figured out how to install the OS9.1 update on a 6100/60? Apple
> claims that it can only be done from the 9.1 CD. Surely someone has figured
> out how to get around that, no?

I think Apple's claim goes something like this: If you have a Power
Macintosh 6100, 7100, 8100, or 9150 with a third-party accelerator card that
increases the speed of your computer, the Installer may not install Mac OS
9.1. And, also, that you cannot perform the update unless you update from
Mac OS 8.5 or later. Note that the downloadable OS 9.1 is an updater only,
not a full install.

If that is the case, I would suggest removing the accelerator, install the
update, replace the accelerator, and see if that works. Of course, I would
keep a backup of the previous system in case that does not work.

As far as being able to update only from the CD, I did not find any such
warning. I do not see why there should be a problem using the updater from a
hard disk, unless the update can not be done on the boot disk (I did not try
that).

A final note; Apple offers a downloadable AppleScript applet, called, Remove
Temporary Items, which will eliminate the major reason for wanting to
upgrade above 9.04.

Subject: System freeze with OS 9.1 and Filemaker/Quark Xpress and

Hi!

I just wanted to inform the community of the fact that in the German version
of OS 9.1 the control panel þmultiple users™ (Mehrere Benutzer) is likely to
cause many problems. Apparently it causes a freeze when you try to print
from a network document opened with Filemaker5. And Quark Xpress 4.11 will
quit unexpectedly while loading images and saving large files (™Fehler 2™).
I do not know if the problem is based on the altered file structure or on
the mentioned aplications themselves. But the only þwork-around™ I could
figure out is to unselect the þmultiple users™ control panel and system
extension. An update of either the control panel or Filemaker respectively
Quark Xpress might help us get rid of this.

The problem occurred on an iMac (with Filemaker) and on a blue&white G3 with
Quark.

I³d be thankful for any investigation on this subject.
