Subject: (A) when old mac will mount nothing but a floppy drive ...

I have been developing my own system of backup with firewire to and
from my powerbook G4 titanium 20gig drive.
I also have a G4 accelerated mac 8500 which, with boot from
internal hard drives or cd, had only booted to question mark (icon) and
with boot from floppy didn't mount the hard drives.
At that point I didn't know what my situation was. Though all the
data was backed up there seemed no way to get at the drives to see what was
or wasn't there or to restore them.
A local friend, Dan Brown, said these drives didn't automount at
boot because of corrupted pref's files on the selected startup drive. We
guessed that if I only could get my hard drives to mount I should trash my
finder prefs, startup prefs and startup device pref's. Use of various
things on the computer would restore uncorrupted pref's later.
Using another working macintosh IIsi with both cd and floppy drive,
I made an 8.1 emergency floppy with Drive Setup Lite from Developer cd
series 1998 system software 1998 (used Disk Tools PPC.img). I booted from
that emergency floppy and had Drive Setup Lite mount my hard drives to
trash my corrupted prefs.
Then I could boot from cd's and hard drives again.

	Summary:
Drive Setup Lite mounts hard drives from emergency cd when they
don't otherwise mount. Keep such an emergency floppy disk around if you
have an older machine that allows a small enough operating system to fit on
a floppy. When needed you will be able to mount and trash corrupted prefs
mentioned.

	Postscript :
What if you have a newer machine that won't fit a system on an
emergency floppy or doesn't even have a floppy drive and the hard drives
and cd's won't automount.
James Merrett, On-Site Service and Sales, at Apple Infomart
28Feb2001 told me that there was now software and cards to allow booting
off firewire drives so that newer computers with larger operating systems
and a full Drive Setup could mount prefs-corrupted drives.

Subject: (Q) Need to know the Canon equivalent ink cartridges for CSW

Hi

I need to buy some replacement ink tanks for an Apple Color Stylewriter
2500 colour printer. I know that these printers were actually manufactured
by Canon.

Does anyone know which Canon printers are equivalent to the CSW 2500, as
knowing this would enable me to buy from a wider selection of suppliers?

TIA

To:
Subject: [*] REplay PLAYer light

REplay PLAYer is a computer program that de-constructs a given sound
file and re-composes it by using realtime composition algorithms - a
field of research that has been investigated by Karlheinz Essl since
the mid 1980ies. With this project, Karlheinz Essl is following once
again his vision of a music "that is composed, as if from itself
(auto-poetic), at the moment of its sounding."

REplay PLAYer can be used as a tool to generate an infinite and
every-changing sonic stream from a single sound file for artistical,
compositional or mere recreational purposes. It can also be regarded
as a computer based instrument for live performances, as an
interactive sound installation or a generator for ambient music.

The current stage of this project is a public domain "light" version
that allows only limited user interaction. In a further step, a
shareware version will be released which 1) will offer the
possibility to save the output of the REplay PLAYer directly to disk,
2) includes built-in sound effects and support for VST plugins, and
3) supplies more control facilities for the user.

System requirements

	Apple Macintosh G3 computer
	OS 8.x or better
min. 24 MB of free RAM (80 MB recommended)

What the REplay PLAYer does

The REplay PLAYer stores an entire sound file in the computer's RAM
from which it cuts out particles of varying length from different
positions of the file. The length of the particles is determined by
the "granularity" parameter". Then the program will overlap these
particles according to the density parameter. Both parameters can be
either controlled manually, or by selecting presets from a pop-up
menu.

Subject: Disk request won't go away

Hi.

Every time I start up my 7200, the CDROM drive ejects its CDROM, asks to
have the CDROM put back and requests this "Astra scan disk" to be inserted
into the floppy drive. Until I press "cancel", it won't go away. I have
zapped the pram several times, rebuilt the desktop, etc. to no effect.
How can I get rid of this annoying behavior? (I don't know where the Astra
disk is, so I can't insert it). There is no ghost image of the disk on
the desktop. The only other thing I can think of is to do a clean install
of the system (8.6) (or, last resort, wipe the drive!) but I don't have a
universal 8.5 or 8.6 disk to use or a reliable backup medium. Any
suggestions?

Thanks for any info you can offer,

Tom Landis

A client's G4, which we were using to serve FileMaker Pro via FMP Server,
crashed after only a year or so of service. One "expert" involved mentioned
having knowledge of several G4s that have crashed similarly. In this case,
it was an IDE/ATA drive but he thought he had also heard of SCSI crashing.
Any corroborating tales? Any particular reasons why? Thanks! Sivea

1. Probably not (I would say no, but few things are impossible, just
impractical)

2. Sony makes a media converter that will do it at high quality via
firewire and allow you to send it back to tape for about $300-400. There
are other manufacturers of the same type of product as well. I think its
called the DVMC-2.

If you are doing web/computer video (so you don't want to go back to tape)
you can you can use a usb video converter avialable from most mac catalog
places . . .
