Subject: (A) Sharing CSW 4500 on a network

Dear Digest readers,
I've already e-mailed Mr. Chabot who asked this question on Digest
V18#34, though I thought some other people may be interested:

This from the Apple Software Update Library, driver version 1.0.3 for
the Stylewriter 4000 series:

"

Printing on an AppleTalk Network

The Color StyleWriter 4100 and 4500 can be used on a
LocalTalk network. Although they can be connected using
LocalTalk cabling, problems may be encountered when more
than one user attempts to print simultaneously. Whenever
possible, each user on the network should avoid sending a
print job at the same time as another user and should wait
for the printer to finish its current print job before
sending a new one. Also for best results when printing over
an AppleTalk network, make sure each user turns background
printing OFF.
"
The full readme may be found at
http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Printing/StyleWriter/CSW_4000_Series_1.0.3_Info.txt

Or if you want to go directly, download all CSW 4000 files at:

The Mac-Site-list lists over 120 mac anonymous ftp sites (some with notes),
over 100 Mac web pages, and contains some instructions on how to use anonymous
ftp and find files as well a format chart showing which programs decompress
and decode which files. Also there is a section on how to use certain files.

This Stuffit archive contains both the text and html versions of
the Mac-Site-list.

To ensure that the columns in the Format Chart section line up correctly the

Subject: [*] MoviePhile 3.5.2

MoviePhile is a shareware database useful for keeping track of your video
collection - whether it consists of movies (any format), tapes of television
shows, home movies, QuickTime movies, or whatever. It is available for both
Macintosh and Windows as a stand-alone database (i.e. no other software is
required).

Features:

* VHS Label Printing
* QuickTime Movie Import and Playback
* Scheduling Reminders (for when you don't want to miss that important
event)
* Tons of Useful Fields

You can enter, search and sort information about the movie title, cast,
rating, your personal evaluation of the movie, it's genre, whether it's
widescreen or pan & scan and more. If you taped it off of some source, you
can enter data as to what that source was, whether there are commercials on
the tape, the quality and speed of the recording and more.

You loan your movies out sometimes? You don't have to wonder any more who
has which movies - let MoviePhile take care of that for you.

Do you have to use all of these features for MoviePhile to be of use to you?
No. If all you want is something to keep track of the movies in your
collection and who they are on loan to, MoviePhile is great for that. All
the other features are there when you need them.

New features in version 3.5.2:

* Spell Checking
* Graphics importing in the Label -o- Matic
* New "Everything" list view
* All list views have been redesigned to show more records on the screen and
more information per record
* A field for "Director" (and there was much rejoicing)
* New preference that lets you set the default list view you want to see
when you click "List"
* New preference that lets you set the default sort order MoviePhile opens
with
* Sorting by Tape Number should now work correctly for numeric tape numbers
* Fixed a problem with the "Register" application that directed emails to me
instead of Kagi
* Updates to the Read Me and License agreements (Woo-hoo!)

PixelToy is one of those rare programs that defies easy
categorization. Use it to create beautiful still images to composite
in an image editor, generate QuickTime movies of animated special
effects for use with video editing software, or just chill out and
watch the beautiful patterns react to audio.

Dance clubs and cafes around the world dazzle audiences with
PixelToy's live visual effects. What's more, visual artists have
added PixelToy to their arsenal of video effects generation software,
using QuickTime movies from PixelToy in non-linear video editors such
as Adobe Premiere or After Effects.

PixelToy 2.5 is now Mac OS X native, courtesy of Apple's Carbon
technology! This version also adds a wide variety of small features
and improvements, including vertical and horizontal image mirroring
control, improved AutoPilot control, sound input device selection,
and more.

Note that this is "beta" software, primarily because Mac OS X has not
yet been finalised. PixelToy 2.5 will peacefully coexist with
PixelToy 2.2 and use the same Sets files. Please let me know about
any problems you may run into!

PixelToy 2.5 requires a PowerPC processor, Mac OS 8.1 or newer,
QuickTime 3.0 or newer and CarbonLib 1.0.4 or newer. PixelToy is
shareware. (US $15)

Subject: [*] QIF Convert 1.1 - Adding Categories to QIF Files Based on Description

QIF Convert converts Quicken Interchange Format (QIF) banking or
credit card transaction files, adding Quicken categories based on the
description of each transaction. It is useful for converting QIF
downloaded from online banking or credit card web sites before
importing them into Quicken. To convert a QIF file, just drop it
onto QIF Categories.

You can configure QIF Categories as a browser helper application for
files of type application/qif to have it invoked automatically on
downloaded QIF files.

QIF Convert converts each transaction in the QIF file by: 1) Deleting
any existing category, and adding a category associated with the
transaction's description; 2) Removing the plus sign from transaction
amounts (because not all versions of Quicken allow plus signs); 3)
Optionally adding an indication that the transaction has cleared; 4)
Optionally extracting a check number from the description (unless the
transaction already has a check number) and using it as the check
number that Quicken will recognize; 5) Optionally changing the
description and category to values associated with the combination of
the original description and the amount; and 6) Optionally allowing
you to confirm the transaction, where the description and/or category
can be changed, or the transaction can be deleted. You have the
option of store transactions from one ore multiple accounts in the
same output file.

System requirements:
* System 7.5.3 through 9.1

Subject: [*] TcTC 1.0, Timecode Converter and Calculator

TcTC is a timecode converter and calculator application.
Timecodes, edgecodes and framecounts can be converted into several
other formats simultaneously. The basic math operations can be
performed on these timecodes.
The supported TC formats are PAL, NTSC Drop, NTSC Non-Drop, HD/Film
24p, 35mm, 16mm20, 16mm40, framecount, as well as TC and EC formats
with freely selectable framerates (currently between 1 and 100
fps/fpe).
An offset management system deals with situations in which timecodes
have changed due to transfers. If the same frame that originated on a
piece of film and is identified there by an edgecode is transferred
to, say, two different tapes and ends up there having two entirely
unrelated timecodes, TcTC offers a method of establishing a relation
between these different, essentially arbitrary edgecodes and
timecodes and thus allows you to keep track of the footage in the
various places.

TcTC requires a Macintosh with a PPC processor and MacOS 8.5 or higher.

Often this happens because a disk is shared, or thinks it's shared. You can check this by mounting the disk in question, "Get Info" on it, and check the "Sharing" panel. Not having the disk is trouble, but not insurmountable trouble (excuse the pun).
Disks with an "AppleShare PDS" file on their root level (an invisible file) have sharing information, which sometimes becomes corrupted. I have a OneClick script that will delete all these invisible files from local volumes. However, I don't think that's necessary for your case since you think it's a CD-ROM that's causing the trouble. You just have to go into the "Preferences" folder and delete the contents of the "File Sharing" folder. These will be files ending in ".PDF" and bearing the name of the CD-ROM. After you restart, the computer shouldn't ask for the disk any more. (You might also check to see whether "File Sharing" is turned on, through the control panel of the same name; if you don't need it, it can slow your computer down and it should be turned off.)
There are probably other things that can cause this, but this is my best guess.

Subject: [Q] Cross-platform programming?

A group for which I'm a beta tester is attempting to produce a
cross-platform educational CD using Macromedia Director. At least I
think that's its name ("Macromedia Directeur"). Apparently, the PC
version works okay, but the programmers are not having much success
with the Mac side.

The managing editor (not the programmer) says, "With 111 megs of
video, we're pushing the limits of CD technology, especially with
Macintosh". If it is true, as I've heard, that the Mac is the
platform of choice for filmmakers, I would think that a short film
would be a piece of cake, let alone the language and cultural
exercises that go with it.

Can anyone suggest better software for cross-platform programming?
Or just offer some ideas?

I apologize for asking such a vague question, but that's pretty much
all I know at the moment. I could probably find out more details, if
anyone wishes.

I'm looking forward to the replies.

Subject: G4 AT HD Crashing After Less Than 2yrs Service--Typical?

Although the client's G4 was being used for FMP Server, absolutely nothing
else was allowed to happen on this machine, including sharing. It's a mixed
PC and Mac network using TCP/IP, 10BaseT on cat5 through a passive Farallon
hub, peer to peer sharing for the most part--only FMP is served. Lots of
internet use provided through a CISCO 675 gateway type device. Originally,
was set up with registered static IP addresses from the ISP. The ISP changed
hands and persuaded said client to move to DHCP using NAT in the Cisco 675.
Immediate problems, of course. Someone then assigned bogus static IP
addresses using NAT with the 675 to the 2 Macs which were crashing like
crazy under DHCP (a new iMac and an older G3 which provides file sharing for
large graphics files) and the FMP Server. Everything seemed to be okay until
the drive crashed royally at 5:30am when no one was around. We were called
for the first time on this problem at this point (we provide DB services,
not network support).

I am unclear whether the IP problems are related or whether G4 AT HDs are
just prone to early demise. Anyone have related experiences?

For regular printing you need a BC21 color and BC21 Black cartridge.
There is also an all black cartridge available and a photoquality
cartridge. The equivalent Cannon was from the 4000 series and I believe
specifically the 4300 for a CSW2500 equivalent.

On any machine running FileMaker Server, you should have nothing else
running. Not Timbuktu. Not Retrospect. Not Web Sharing. Not even
File Sharing*. Nada.

FileMaker Server is robust when it has a dedicated machine to run on
but it doesn't play nice with the other kids. Put FmServer on your
machine, put the machine in a cool, remote closet, and then lock the
door.

* You can have file sharing running on a second hard drive, and have
FmServer do its scheduled backups from the primary hard drive to that
second hard drive; then you can have a backup program back up the
second hard drive over the network, if you can set it up to do so
without loading any extra Extensions on the FmServer such as
Retrospect Client. But don't share any portion of the hard disk that
contains the FileMaker Pro files themselves.

Subject: Printer output to Mac screen.

I have been using a so-called Receiver Multi-Reader (a radio readout
device) what has a Centronics 25 pin printer output. Not willing to connect
a printer to it since it would waste great amounts of paper does any one
know how to connect this Centronics printer output to a Mac so that it
shows up on the screen?? I think it can be done but how.

yes there are converter boxes, that take analog video as input
and output to firewire

for a pretty good list of what's available checkout:

I'm not sure about RCA->Firewire, but there is a composite video
(RCA) to USB interface out there. Check out the InterView at
<http://xlr8.com/ProductInfo/interview/>. I think it will fit your
needs just fine. I'm planning on grabbing one when I can free up some
discretionary cash.
