Thanks, Daly. Worked like a charm!!! (I only did the "mailto:" protocol, but I assume the FTP one would work just as well.)

Yeah, but they're quite a bit more expensive than PCI cards ($250+). I've
been using one from Asante for a while with no problems. Other
manufacturers make them as well. You can find them on the MacWarehouse web
site <http://www.microwarehouse.com/macwarehouse>.

My PowerBase 200 *loves* OS 8.5. It's the best thing I've ever done for
my computer. In fact, the installation went *flawlessly.*

I say, do it! If you have any problems, you can be assured that they're
not hardware-related.

The only thing I've found is that my computer FREAKS OUT unless I have
the Asante network driver installed. The old driver that came on my
PowerComputing CD-ROM works just fine, and in my experience, faster than
the newest on from Asante's web site.

Do it!

I've got rather a lot of CD-Rs of chip datasheets which I burned with
Joliet (Win95/98/NT) long file names. I know MacOS 8.1 doesn't support
this format - but does 8.5? It is worth the money to me to upgrade for
this feature alone.

Failing that, is there a third-party extension I can use? Because I
indexed the disks with HTML indices, they are pretty much unusable
without their long file names.

Hi,
I'm open for suggestions as to low to mid level security software for a
single, shared, desktop Mac used to run a database for a business.
Frankly, Apple's "At Ease" 3.03 provided all that I really needed until
recently when I discovered that automatic backup scripts via Dantz's
"Retrospect" won't run with At Ease turned on.

My needs are to be sure that configurations aren't changed, protection of
certain folders from being read and or altered, and not trashing what
shouldn't be trashed.

Is there a way for me to see the connection speed of my modem - a PCMCIA
3Com/USR 56K CruiseCard. I'm using OT/PPP, OT1.3, OS8.1, HFS+ on a PWB1400c.

With my Global Village PowerPort Platinum Pro (33.6), I could tell the
connection speed at a glance via a menu display. With the USR, no such
facility is provided and, even when I open my PPP Control Panel, the speed
is listed as 'unknown' or somesuch drivel.

I just bought a G3/300 with 8.5(English) installed. My wife has a 6500/275

doesn't have any problems and she's happy with 8.1. The problem is we have
a CDR drive, a flatbet scanner and a Jaz drive we both want to use.

My question is can I ethernet/file share the 2 computers together to have

Deinstall Remote Access client after installing 8.5, and reinstall Personal
Server. You can try a custom install of 8.5 omitting Remote Access, but I'd
be prepared to have to reinstall Personal Server afterwards, anyway. It's
no problem, though. I think I did reinstall Personal Server and it worked
again, right away.

Did you install Open Transport? Do you have TCP/IP control panel in your
system? If so, it sounds like maybe you activated the TCP Switcher
application and went from "Classic Networking" to Open Transport. You could
use the Find utility to see if you have "TCP Switcher" somewhere on your
hard drive (Apple Extras??) and also take a look for TCP/IP in the control
panels.

If you did switch, then you could re-run the TCP Switcher to revert to
Classic Networking with MacTCP.

I do not believe that is true at all. OS 8 is a complete system in itself.
Just do all the regular disk repair and checking and backing up first, and
then update the disk drivers, and do a clean install of OS 8 (then update
it to 8.1) and you will be fine. (And if you decide to stay with System
7.6, at least do update it to 7.6.1.)

I usually won't waste bandwidth with 'me too' responses but I feel
compelled to do so in this case. I'm using a PowerBook
1400c/48Mb/8.1/HFS+/2Gb IDE. I also switched to HFS+, also had problems
with the old Preferences folder: the folder size would change, rolling li=
ke
the odometer on a car; frequent crashes necessitating desktop rebuilds,
etc. And I couldn't delete the old preferences folder! Disk First Aid,
Norton, MacMedic and TechTool Pro alternated between reporting directory
problems, saying everything was fine or reporting unfixable problems. In
other words, they didn't solve the problems.

Then it crashed. And thugh Apple sent out that 8.1 upgrade allowing one t=
o
change to HFS+, they didn't send a bootable. Anyway, I lost the drive. Al=
l
it took was my backup (daily, thankfully) and NINE DAYS OF WORK to
re-install, reload, dump and tweak my way to a working HFS+ installation.
(Yes, I use HFS+ still). Works fine but getting here was like tiptoeing
through a minefield.

To rate the tools in terms of their actual utility/applicability:
Disk First Aid - 8
Retrospect - 8
Norton Utilities - 6
TechTool Pro - 3
MacMedic - 2
'Manual Labour' - 9

Do these vendors use these tools themselves? If so, they must be Windoze
shops 'cause they seem to delight in the obscure and take non-performance
in stride. Caveat Upgrader=8A

Subject: IE - Contextual Menus Conflict

I am positively stumped.

I love IE for various features, especially the on-the-fly font size
adjustment, which helps these middle aged eyes a great deal.
It worked just wonderfully on my G3/233/96 under 8.5 until a few days ago,
when almost every time I used the *Open link in new window* option resulted
in an error-2 disappearance.
Moreover, IE wouldn't release the chache.waf file. It couldn't be trashed,
and even a restart was impossible, since a dialogue informed me that a file
was open and couldn't be deleted.
Only a 3-finger salute would help.

I disabled FolderPop - no change. I did a clean reinstall of ALL my MS
software, including Office 98, just in case one of the myriad MA extensions
and libraries might be missing - no change.

Then I consulted Conflict Catcher 8.03, which listed Contextual Menus
Extension and SOMobjects as the likely culprits. (Supporting the contextual
conflict)

I then did a clean reinstall of 8.5 as well - you can tell I like IE, can't
you? - now IE freezes whenever I do that *open in new window* thingie....
most perplexing!

Use the 8.5 installer to remove remote access client and related OT/PPP

I have good news, I know why your MacTCP file is invisible. Your
particular version of the Mac OS was stuck bridging the gap between
MacTCP (now called 'classic' networking) and the new Open Transport
networking.

To accomplish this feat, a master switch was thrown in (some say well
hidden, but...) this control panel is called the Network control panel.
Which is kinda funny since on my PowerBook it came pre-installed not in
the control panels folder but in the Apple Extras folder.

Anyway, if you have this file on your machine, open it and choose. You
can run MacTCP or OT, but not both. If you don't have this file, you
should run the installer from your Mac OS disk.

As to how your networking got into its current state...<shrug> It could
be any number of things. You may want to throw out your MacTCP prefs
(but write down your settings first!)

I am having a problem with my internet connection and can't seem to

	I'm using a Power Mac 7500, OS 8.1, PPP version 1.0.1, Modem
version 1.0.1 and OT/PPP version 1.0.1 with a GlobalVillage Teleport
Platinum modem. The modem script is the most recently released one posted
by the manufacturer.
It may be significant that I live in a semirural area and my
telephone company is not the same as that of my ISP, but it is still a
"local" call and has not changed in the past few months.
I had been logging onto my ISP access with a speed of 33,000 bps
and my download speed ran between 1500 and 2500 bytes per sec. Then, a few
weeks ago, the service provider switched to a 56 K access number and
discontinued the older one. I purchased a faster modem, but it would not
access above 26,400 bps. I then returned to my previous modem; the only
change from earlier was the access number.
I now log on at 26,400 and my downloads with both Netscape, Fetch
and Transit rarely exceed 1000 bytes per second (even at 3 A.M. and 6 A.M.,
times which in the past were not busy. Most of the time they range from 450
to 700 bytes per second.

The provider doesn't have an answer and blames the telephone
company; the telephone company states that they will only guarantee a 9600
bps connection (although there has been no change in their service between
the time of updates) and the modem manufacturer tells me to read the
manual.

Can ayone explain what's going on?

Subject: Origin of "_Keyboard" FFIL? (font)

Ok. I have found a mysterious font in my Font folder called '_Keyboard'
which claims to be part of the Appearance SDK 1.0.3 =A9 Apple, version 1.0.3=
=2E
I'm trying to figure out where on earth this font came from. It did not
come from the System 8.5 CD as I've already looked in all the tomes and
didn't find anything that would correlate. So what is it? and where did it
come from?

thx

D.

>(back up the hard disk, reformat it using Drive
>Setup on the 8.5 CD, install, restore)

NO NO NO!

Many people installing 8.5 have seen _total_ hard drive failure from the
install. All the 'lost disk' problems being shared on the Mac tech sites
(macfixit, macresource, macnn, macintouch) point to the Drive Setup on the
CD as the culprit. Use the newest Drive Setup, 1.6.1, available from the
Apple download pages now.

See this link:
http://www.macintouch.com/m85_diskdamage.html
for instructions on how to install the update.

(I don't mean to yell, but even though the problem is *rare* -- 1% of
people installing the OS at the _very_ most -- the consequences can be
catastrophic.)

Subject: Print to Postscript file

As it so happens I just experienced the Bizarro World equivelent to this
problem. I had some files on a PC that I wanted to turn into Acrobats
(why on earth was I using a PC? to liberate those files for the good of
Mac-kind of course!)

Anyway, I found that Adobe's PostScript Printer Driver works
excellently. They also have a Mac version, available at:

http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/printerdrivers/macintosh.html

It claims to provide routing straight to Acrobat Distiller so no messy
PostScript files laying around! Quick and easy clean up!

Have you tried upgrading Eudora with the latest updater? They clearly
indicate a problem about this in the documentation coming with the updater.

I had too a lot of problems with any attachment in Eudora. It would do just
the problem you are describing.

I am not sure if the problem was caused by Norton itself, when writing the
FileSaver file. There was only one partition on which I had this problem
and it was the one with the System and the attachments on it.

I had to reformat the whole drive lately to get rid of the problem because
the directory was becoming worst and worst as time was going by, reinstall
the Apple driver with Drive Setup 1.6 which comes with System 8.5 (in fact
1.6.1 is available at the Apple site), then install HardDisk Tool Kit
driver 2.5.3 after a complete formatting, update Norton with the updater
4.0.1, update Norton AntiVirus with the updater for November. Now, problem
seems to be solved!!!

Subject: Q:ARA/PPP modem script for USR/3Com 56k PC card?

I finally broke down and bought a 56k modem card to upgrade my lagging
28.8 card. I got a great deal on a Megahertz 56k XJ5560. (yay eBay!)

My problem is I don't have any 56k scripts in my OT/PPP scripts folder.
I seem to remember having them at one time, but I can't seem to locate
them now.

Does anyone have a script for a 56k PC card? Better yet would be the the
drivers which come with the XJA5560 (basicly the same card with the Mac
packaging). A good search of the USR/3Com http and ftp sites didn't
yield anything.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Type -192 error on Launcher (A)

Launcher is not impressive. It used to crash my machine with System 7.5.5
on a LC520. Tthe problems seems to be in handling those Aliases created by
Launcher. A better option is simply to create alias and put them directlyon
the desktop. Another great option is DT Launch which comes with DiskTop.
You can launch program directly from the Apple menu and launch the files at
the same time. I have been using this for many years on many different
systems. You can do the same however by creating aliases, putting them in a
folder and putting this folder in the Apple menu. You will be able to
launch the applications directly from the Apple menu.
