Subject: [*] Cameraid 1.1.1

Cameraid 1.1.1 is the all in one digital photography utility program for the
Macintosh.

Version 1.0 has already been extremely popular among owners of Olympus,
Agfa, Epson, Sanyo and Nikon digital cameras. Version 1.1 added a lot
of new features, making the program indispensable to anyone who needs
to manipulate JPEG images on the Macintosh. Version 1.1.1 is a
maintenance release containing some improvements and several bug
fixes.

Cameraid downloads images from Agfa, Apple (QT-200), Epson, Fuji,
Leica, Nikon, Olympus, Sanyo and Toshiba digital cameras. Use any
serial port, including third party solutions such as the Keyspan SX
Serial Card (http://www.keyspan.com). Cameraid works transparently in
the background, allowing the user to continue working while the images
are downloading.

The program features a very fast viewer, capable of opening up to
thousands of images with drag and drop from the Finder.

The viewer displays useful information about digital camera files. It's
the most convenient way to find out what exposure time and aperture was
used for taking a photo. Supports all the cameras mentioned above and
any that use the Exif standard (including Kodak, Ricoh and many
others).

Lossless JPEG transforms: Cameraid can rotate and transform on JPEG
images without degrading the image quality. Indispensable for rotating
portrait oriented photos from digital cameras to their proper
orientation.

Powerful batch operations can be used to copy files from flash memory
cards, automatically create simple HTML web pages, add custom icons,
rename files based on the date and time when the photo was taken and
much more.

Automatic enhancement filters to enhance images with minimal user
interaction. What used to take hours of manual labor can now be done
in minutes using a single batch operation. A unique filter can be used
to reduce CCD image sensor and interlace artifacts.

Cameraid 1.1.1 requires A Macintosh with a 68020 or better processor,
QuickTime, at least System 7 and 2MB of available RAM.

The unregistered shareware version is fully functional, but includes
built-in delays and registration reminders in some operations. The $15
registration fee (payable through Kagi) will eliminate the delays and
make working with Cameraid faster and smoother.

Chipmunk Basic is a freeware old-fashioned Basic Interpreter, accelerated
for the PowerMac, yet still compatible with old 68k Macs running System 6.
Features include support for a simple sprite graphics engine, sound,
MacinTalk speech, MacTCP, AppleScript, Drag&Drop and OOP programming.

Every personal computer should come with a simple, easy to learn, programming
language. Chipmunk Basic was my contribution for the very first PowerMacs.
Chipmunk Basic only comes with a man page and a quick reference to the
Mac specific functions. The language is mostly compatible with books on
programming in BASIC that were written between around 1978 and 1990.
This version is a both bug fix and new feature release. It is still free
for educational and non-commercial distribution and use (but only for those
who don't believe that using the BASIC language causes brain damage. :-)

Permission is granted to include this version of Chipmunk Basic on CD-ROM
compendiums of the Info-Mac and UMich archives. Please replace older
versions of Chipmunk Basic that are in the archives with this version.

Please send bug reports to <mailto:rhn@nicholson.com>. Updates and docs
are at the Chipmunk Basic Home Page <http://www.nicholson.com/rhn/basic/>.

Shortened version history:
Version 3.3.2: fixed sprite turn bug, added Quicktime midi sound
Version 3.3.7: fixed integer rounding; added "COM3:" to use serial driver
Version 3.4.8: added matrix ops, changed precedence of "not" operator,

Subject: [*] Guillotine 1.0

Guillotine is a drop box that "decapitates" those ugly all caps DOS-like
filenames. Just drop the offending files/folders on it, and the names will
become all lowercase with the first letter of each word capitalized.
Guillotine processes the complete contents of dropped folders. To make
filenames all caps or all lowercase, just choose the appropriate item on
the Options menu. Note: you may have to close and reopen the folder for the
new name(s) to appear in the Finder. (Mac OS 8 does not have this problem.)

Guillotine is a fat binary for optimal performance on 68K and PowerPC Macs.
It supports the Navigation Services and Folder Actions features in Mac OS
8.5. Best of all, it's free.

Subject: [*] OneApp English-Italian 5.4

OneApp English-Italian e' un dizionario inglese-italiano per computer Mac
OS contenente piu' di 23.000 vocaboli con le corrispondenti definizioni in
italiano.

OneApp English-Italian is an English/Italian dictionary for Macintosh
users, containing more than 23,000 English words with translations into
Italian.

You can find all the entries that contain any particular English or Italian
word by typing or pasting the word into the Find box and pressing the
Return key. The dictionary collects all the entries that match what you've
entered, and displays the English and the Italian side-by-side. You can
copy words from the dictionary and paste them into another document. You
can collect English words (with their Italian translations) in a separate
window and study them together. If you have Apple Text-to-Speech you can
listen to the English vocabulary, and you can type or copy other English
text into a separate window and the program will read it aloud. The user
can easily create additional plug-in dictionaries to supplement the
dictionary provided with the program.

Power Windows 2.0.5 -- January 13, 1999

The Power Windows control panel lets you drag entire windows instead
of dotted outlines. It offers both solid and translucent window dragging
and is the only such utility to support the Finder's popup windows (aka
tabbed windows) introduced in Mac OS 8.

Version 2.0.5 fixes problems dragging windows with StuffIt Deluxe 5

Subject: [*] SmoothType 2.1

SmoothType 2.1 -- January 13, 1999
by Greg Landweber, coauthor of Kaleidoscope

The SmoothType control panel effectively increases the resolution of
text on the screen by blurring the edges of bitmap fonts with shades
of gray, a technique called "anti-aliasing". This is similar to the font
smoothing in Mac OS 8.5, but SmoothType uses a more aggressive
anti-aliasing algorithm and offers more flexibility.

SmoothType is compatible with all system versions from System 7 to
Mac OS 8.5/8.5.1. Under 8.5, it overrides the built-in font smoothing.

Version 2.1 is now significantly faster. It also fixes problems with
Microsoft Word 98, PageSpinner, and a few other applications.

StonerSound uses the QuickTime Musical Architecture for playing sounds. If

But the strength of The Musician is its scanning ability: it may explore
your HDs, CDs, folders, diskettes, files, searching for sounds to play. For
example you may drag your disks on The Musician then continuing your normal
work: The Musician will play, asynchronously and in background, any file of

According to your setting The Musician can play any sound immediately or
after your consent, in this last case, whenever founds 'snd ' resources
inside a file, it also conveys you how many sounds the file contains.
In addition you may instruct The Musician to collect aliases of sound
files, while it's playing, so you may enjoy them, when you want, without
perform another search.
The main window has a simple bar that meters the input level of the
microphone, you may disable the bar through the preferences.
At last The Musician may show the QuickTime=81 keyboard (for your fun!) and
record new sounds in 'sfil' or 'AIFF' format.
The Musician is Internet Config, Drag Manager and Navigation Manager aware,
moreover it's Appearance savvy. It requires at least System 7 to run and
uses QuickTime=81 to play some kind of files.

Bryan,

I had the same experience with a DEC drive. The problem was
that the drive was not configured to spin up at power on time.
By using FWB's hard disk toolkit, I could get the drive to
spin and format & mount it.

If you have any documentation on your Maxtor, see if there is
a jumper that controls this behavior. I had no such luck
with the DEC, but I've got a Seagate that is configurable
like this. Seagate's web site is exceptional with complete
docs in PDF format on (it seems) every drive they've ever made.

Subject: [Q] Scanner recommendations?

Does anyone have personal experience (good or bad) of the Epson GT-7000
Photo scanner? It seems to be a relatively inexpensive way of scanning A4
(letter) sized paper for faxes and copying, whilst at the same time being
able to make a passable job of colour 35mm slides with the bundled tranny
adaptor. The spec is 600x2400 dpi (optical) although I suspect the 2400
direction won't actually resolve 2400 lines!

My past experience of Epson scanners on the Mac is that their TWAIN driver
could be a little troublesome, causing occasional crashes, and sometimes
needing to be re-installed. (This was a GT-9000 on a Quadra 610.) The
GT-7000 got 4 mice in a MacUser review, but they didn't mention
transparency scanning, and I can't find any other reviews.

Comments? What is the competition (A4 & able to do 35mm slides)? [The
GT-7000 Photo is 197 UK pounds plus tax here (that's about 370 US dollars
inc.) and I don't want to go much higher than this.]

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Which keyboard to use in CANADA? BRAVO TO APPLE

Hi,

I was having a problem after installing Windows 95 with Virtual PC on my
machine. Where are the *&&% keys located? They do not have the keycap desk
accessory like us. So, I wanted to know if there was a Canadian standard I
could learn which could be used on both Mac and PC.

I am working now on a customized keyboards I had designed with MacKemeleon
under System 6 which emulated an IBM selectric, still working even under
System 8.5. It was time for a change!

So, I did some search about the STANDARD keyboard which should be used in
Canada if you have to deal with accents. I did some research about this
topic and our Language Office in the Province of Quebec gave me some hints.

Since we are a bilingual nation, the Canadian Standard Association took
care of this and proposed some standards for UNIX, PC, MACINTOSH and all
machines. APPLE followed nicely with a keyboard designed the way it is
supposed to be. You can install this keyboard which is designed as
Canadian-CSA and the PHYSICAL keyboard which comes with French-Canadian
System have those keys exactly mapped on top and bottom of the key! Since I
bought a All-in-One (English machine), they gave me a CAN. CSA keyboard.
IS THIS NOT A GREAT COMPANY?

On the PC side under Windows you have to pick ENGLISH Canada, which is
multilingual. But, then you have to play hide and seek with the keys to
find where everything is located. Is-it a joke or what?
