Ian:
Good call from the German web site. Without its two 3.6v lithium batteries
it won't boot. My IIx is doing (well... not doing) the same thing. Even
with replacement batteries mine only starts running but won't actually make
happy chimes and boot. One of the replacement batteries I installed must be
near-dead. If you need to get the batteries with leads soldered on, good
luck; they're difficult to come by. Some of the later model IIx's had
battery holders like we're used to seeing.
Has anyone found a good, cheap way to get batteries into one of these or
cobbled together a replacement system for them?

If it is a "Sharable" printer, this will work perfectly! I think only
the Stylewriters are sharable. You will need to enable printer
sharing (available in Sys 7.6+ I believe) in the Chooser.

Dear Digest readers,
Newer Technologies is making a uSCSI. Presently on backorder
everywhere I looked, and ranging in price from $73 to $79 + S/H.
No need to fill your PCI slot on the Blue and White.

MacWarehouse said when I called that they expect their first shipment
to come March 5. But as always that is subject to change.

Subject: (Q) Alternative to Control Strip Menu?

I recently upgraded to System 8.5.1 and found that one of my favorite
pieces of shareware (for which I paid the fee!), Control Strip Menu, no
longer works.

As MacFixit reports at <http://www.macfixit.com/reports/macos8.5-a.shtml>:

Control Strip Menu 3.0.2 will reportedly cause Apple's Control Strip to
fail to startup and prevent you from accessing the Control Strip control
panel. Vincent Tan (author of Control Strip Menu) writes: "This problem
is only with the PowerPC version of CSM 3.0.2. In the distribution, there
is a 68K version and this version will load under Mac OS 8.5 and this is
the work-around that I recommend for users until I release a fix."

But the 68K version, though it doesn't prevent the Control Strip from
starting up, doesn't display on my 7600/132.

In case you're not familiar with this marvel, CSM allows you to use the
Control Strip as a miniature, and very flexible launcher.

Is there something similar out there that does work? I really miss it.

Subject: 8.5 on a 7200/120?

The 8.5 installer complained that my drive was not supported. I
thought everything went fine after ignoring the complaint, but now I
am experiencing frequent crashing. I can't even restart or shut down
cleanly. Sometimes I get a freeze, other times I get a Type 10 error
or a CHK (?) error. I'd like to resolve this before I lose any data.

The drive passes Norton Disk Doctor 4.0.3 with no problems. It's a
Quantum Fireball 1280S (for Apple) formatted with HFS+ according to
ASP 2.1.2. Before I shell out $130 for HDT 3.0, perhaps I should
replace the drive altogether. With what though?

Best,
Fraser J. Goodmurphy

I am looking for a simple, reliable, low cost program that will enable me to
use a microphone connected to my Mac PC and generate text from continuous
speech at normal dictation speed.

I would like to get some accurate information based on user experience about

Speech-toText programs that will work with a Mac. If you have successfully
used any of the following products (I don't believe most of them will work
with a Mac) and have opinions to share, please contact me offline at

Subject: G3 Appletalk problem

I have two computers (G3 w/8.1 and IIci w/7.6) and a printer (HP
Deskwriter) connected with Appletalk. The ci can always see the printer,
but the G3 frequently (way too often) refuses to see either the printer or
the other computer. I have checked and swapped the cables, so I don't think
it is a wiring problem. Sometimes a reboot of the G3 will allow it on the
network for a while, but even then, it looses its connection after a while.
Because of the differing versions of system software the Appletalk versions
are different on the two machines as is the Deskwriter driver (I haven't
tried the newer Deskwriter software on the ci, why mess with the one that
does work). It is driving us nut not to print from the G3.

Anyone have any other suggestions.

Subject: Microsoft is winning our heart slowly and surely

Hi everyone,

In the last Macworld, there were some rather nice praises for Microsoft,
like Office 98 is the software of the year, Explorer 4.5 including Outlook
are a must have and so on. Also, readers seems to be more positive about
Microsoft.

I am still using Word 5.1 which is for me one of the best software ever
produced for the Macintosh. It have everything I need and when I transfer
to Word 6 for Windows 95, all is fine. I am also using Excel 4 which is
very simple to use.

However, I bought Office 98 and I am using it mostly for conversions to PC
and just for that it is great. I will take time to study it gradually. With
Word 98, I can keep the Word 5.1 format, so this is a big plus. No more
MacLink Plus. I can open anything on the PC side and save it in many format
and just for that it is worth the price in my daily work. I have done test
using VIRTUAL PC and Office for Windows 95 and this is really good. The
documents are really the same on both platform if you use standard fonts.

Also, when you get a Word attachment coming from a PC, you just
double-click on it like in Eudora and bingo, the file is open. You can then
save it in Word 5.1 or whatever.

I have been using Explorer 4.5 for a few days and it gives me a feeling of
lightness as they said it would be. Also, the Microsoft site is very
friendly toward Macintosh users. I remember calling a FRIENDLY Microsoft
representative in Canada who told me that for Microsoft the Macintosh was
not important and this is why we had those botched versions like Word 6.

This seems to be over and they insist on design from the ground up and it
seems to be true. So, perhaps we should really give a try to those products
and forget about BILL. The other BILL is perhaps more dangerous.

Hi,

I have Netscape 4.5 (40 bit encryption because I'm not in U.S.A) running over
imac (O.S 8.5).
I would like to upgrade it to 128 bit encryption.

There are SW like "fortify" that do it, but I found the PC version only.

Someone know if there is a patch for mac too?

Thanks for help.

Subject: Performa 6400 Problems

Hi folks:

I’m a volunteer Mac guy who helps people with all kinds of problems.
Recently, I have come across four different 6400s that began showing the
question mark at startup. Starting from a floppy or CD allows me to
repair HD damage and restart.

A recheck with Disk First Aid and Norton shows directory problems.

Start the computer back up on a floppy or CD, fix the problems, restart
on HD, and the problems are back - with or without extensions on.

Reformatted drives with system 8.0 CD, and in one case replaced the HD,
and still no luck. Every restart brings a corrupted directory.

Help! :-)

Subject: PowerBook 3400c/Broken Trackpad (Question)

The trackpad (which also functions as a mouse) in my PowerBook 3400c is broken.

(I opened the PB3400c according to the service manual instructions
and found out how fragile this part is: made of plastic material, it
has some very thin sections, which are easily broken).

Now comes the hard part, from a Mac user and loyal supporter since 1985:

I browsed the entire Apple site, plus MacinTouch, MacFixIt, etc., and
NOWHERE did I find any indication on how to order a broken part of
hardware!...

The part number for my trackpad is engraved on it: 815-2479, but
where to order it?

I would be grateful if any of you Mac gurus could take the time to
give some pointers on this.

Thank you in advance for any help.
