Subject: (Q) How to replace a PRAM battery-Quadra 800?

Hi,

I recently purchased a old Quadra 800 Mac tower for my kids to work and p=
lay on. I
noticed that the system wouldn't hold my correction of the time and date =
in the Date
& Time CP. Also, the creation and modification dates on several of the pr=
ograms are
wacky (as in stating that the last modification was sometime during the y=
ear 2037).
On top of all this, the system boots up twice during each startup. I figu=
red that
since this is an old used system which works fine in all other aspects on=
ce it's
really booted up-the diagnosis is that the PRAM battery must almost be de=
ad.

Now, I did figure out how to remove the case from the chassis on this tow=
er model-but
OY(!)-it looks pretty tough to get to the PRAM battery on the motherboard=
. I can't
even SEE where the battery is on the motherboard at this point-there are =
lots of
plastic brackets and so forth holding the various drives (CD, hard disk, =
and floppy)
in place.

Any ideas? Should I just spend the 30 or so bucks and take it to a shop?

Thanks,
Eric

Subject: (Q) Recovering memory after quiting all programs

Dear Digest readers,
Granted, Netscape is a memory hog, and Explorer is better at memory
management. But there are numerous other programs that leave their
residue in MacOS 8.6 even after quitting from them. Anybody know a
program that consistently can recover memory that gets allocated to
the Finder when lots of programs are opened? I'd like to be able to
reopen VirtualPC after quitting all open programs, without having to
restart my Mac.

Now that I have 192MB of RAM, the Finder likes to gobble 50MB of it
once Netscape is opened.
Even though its supposed to be able to run on 24MB of RAM.

Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Subject: Apple taking so much time to develop PCMCIA/Cardbus to USB drivers

Dear Digest readers,
According to Outpost.com, Apple was supposed to release drivers for
the PCMCIA/Cardbus card that supports USB back in the beginning of
September. It is now almost October, and the last version in the

ftp://ftp.apple.com//developer/Development_Kits/Mac_OS_USB/

is 1.3f9, and it still doesn't handle USB devices such as the Fusion
Thrustmaster in Virtual Gamestation 1.2, even after editing the files
with ResEdit as stated in the readme. Try and plug in an iMac
mouse, it will work temporarily, but then it freezes up the computer.

I have a Wall Street G3 Powerbook (233 Mhz with 512k backside and 14"
screen), and a Paragon PCMCIA/Cardbus card with a port and cable for
a 2 port USB adapter. MacOS 8.6, and inputsprocket items enabled.

When oh when Apple are you set to finish development of this project?
I've been waiting ages, so I can use USB devices such as IBM's
Viavoice, USB scanners, and USB gamepads for Virtual Gamestation. I
hope some Apple developers here could shed some light on the issues
found with these drivers. Even April issues of MacWorld suggested
such a card would be available by then, and now 4 months later no
drivers for the card to work consistently.

Thank you.
Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Is there a way for me to download a free mp3 player for my iMac? The only
ones I've found so far are free in their preliminary state. However, you
have to pay $25 to register them and until you do, you can only play the
first 2 minutes of any given song. Is there one out there that will let me
play entire songs, but won't cost me anything?

Also:

Is there a way to convert PC format files into Mac files. I'm talking
specifically about download-able things like screen savers. Thanks:)

This is a common problem that can be fixed by locking the Launcher file
before it gets run for the first time.

See Apple Tech Info Library Article # 18445

TITLE: Mac OS: Error -192 or -39 Opening Launcher

Article ID: 18445
Created: 8/21/95
Modified: 9/24/99

TOPIC

I get an error message stating "The control panel Launcher could not be
opened because of error type -192." Sometimes the error is -39. The
Launcher works fine for a few days when I reinstall it and then the same
thing happens. Sometimes the Launcher extends off the screen after
reinstalling. What is going on?

DISCUSSION

When a control panel is opened, the Finder adds a resource to the control
panel that stores the window position. This is so that the control panel
window will open in the same place the next time the control panel is
opened.

The addition of this resource to the Launcher can cause the Launcher to
cease functioning. To correct this, follow these steps:

1. Start up from the Mac OS Install CD.
2. Remove the Launcher Items folder from the System Folder on the hard
drive. Do not throw it away.
3. Throw away Launcher Preferences from the Preferences folder on the hard
drive.
4. Throw away Launcher from the Control Panels folder on the hard drive.
5. Custom install the Launcher.
6. Open the Control Panels folder on the hard drive, select Launcher,
select Get Info ->General Information from the File Menu and check the
Locked box. Checking the Locked box will prevent the Finder from modifying
the file.
7. Start up from the hard drive.
8. Open the Launcher.
9. Close the Launcher.
10. Replace the Launcher Items folder that was previously removed.

You will hear disagreement on this because Iomega has a bad
reputation for reliability, but I have had very good luck backing up
to Jaz disks with Retrospect from Dantz. They are 2-GB removeable
disks, and so it would take maybe two, probably, to back up all your
data. I used to use tape drive, which worked fine, but is much
slower. Many people strongly prefer tapes for backup. They are
inexpensive, dependable, and large. You could get tapes that would
back up your whole drive in one go, so you could just let it run
unattended overnight.

Subject: iMac crashes

I experience periodic freezes on my iMac. Many of them are associated with
Outlook Express version 4.x., though it does tend to have a Finder freeze on
other occasions. It almost always hangs if I try to activate the PalmPilot
Hot Synch software which I normally have disabled but enable whenever I want
to hot synch my data. I've searched for the obvious culprits like Folder
Actions extension and the ObjectLib document in the System folder. We have
other iMacs in the company and most of them routinely crash with Finder
freezes from time even though they are all running OS 8.6. Many of these
users are actually PC people who now find themselves working in an all Apple
environment! Not good for Apple PR. Does anyone have the complete list of
fixes for all iMac freeze-ups?

Also, many higher end miniDV camcorders have "analog input" capability, for
example the Canon Elura. Using such a camera, one can digitize work from
an analog camera or other source and output it as DV thru firewire, et al,
to wherever. It can even be recorded on the miniDV camera tape in the
interim.

Make sure you have a bootable System 8.1 CD! Get software such as
Apple's updated Drivers software Drive Setup version 1.7.3 and update
your current drivers with it. Run Disk First Aid. Then Back UP you Hard
drive to another storage device. Then just follow the instructions in
the Drive Setup utility to erase and partition your drive. It will
delete all of your disk information and partition the drive into x number
of partitions in HFS+ format (if chosen and suggested since it is
required to update to system 9 ). The first partition should be used to
reinstall the MacOS from your System CD(must be bootable 8.1 or later
CD). If you have done all of this properly then you can proceed to
install LINUX on one of the other drives. Linuxsoftware should offer a
way to switch startup system from MacOS to Linux or vice versa. Make
sure that you can do this before buying and installing Linux.
