Subject: [*] Email Merge 1.7 - Easy email customization

Email Merge is the most intuitive Mac program for creating mailings of
individualised eMail messages. It takes a database of information and an
email message, and merges the two to create customised email messages. On
high-end Macs, over 1000 messages per minute can be queued for sending.

It can be used for invoicing, sales, debt recovery, student grading, and
even personal messages. The potential uses are endless.

Version 1.7 adds direct importing from FileMaker Pro (3.0 or later),
importing of comma-delimited text files, in-place data editing,
multiple-line fields, and other minor improvements.

Email Merge can use Claris Emailer, Microsoft Outlook Express, or Eudora.
Versions of these are freely available on the Internet.

Subject: [*] SlashMUD 1.0d22 - The Mac OS hosted MUD server

SlashMUD is a MacOS-based MUD server that is currently in the final
stages of development. SlashMUD is fully object-oriented, includes
many unique features built-in as standard, can be hosted over any
TCP/IP network (including the internet) and is Open Source software with
full source code available.

SlashMUD is very loosely based on the LP type of MUD, but has been
designed and written from the ground up to be fast and extensible. It is
fully compiled for speed (rather than interpreting a pseudo programming
language), uses a custom format for storing data and runs as a native
background-only application on PowerPC based Macintoshes, under either
MacTCP or OpenTransport. It can be run on a standalone Mac for testing
purposes.

Other features include:

* Plugin architecture. Plugins can be written in C or Pascal, and can be
Attachments, Guilds, Monsters, Rooms, Skills, Things or Weapons.
* Intelligent creatures.
* Sophisticated door and key system.
* Comprehensive logging for administrators.
* ANSI colour support.
* Races with language support.
* Regular updates, quick and personal response to bug reports and
dedicated mailing lists (thanks to Peter Lewis for hosting these)
populated by a really cool bunch of people.

turning it into a powerful contact and Internet bookmark manager.

It's being distributed as shareware. Several registration and upgrade
options are available. Registrations are handled by Kagi Shareware.

Version 3 is a complete rewrite of the Software & Hardware Tracker
program, offering a better and simpler interface while improving on its
already impressive and powerful set of features.

Subject: [*] Verbs and Nouns Russisch (Russian/German)

Verbs and Nouns Russisch (Russian/German), by Richard Wellmann. This module
helps you to study Russian vocabulary and grammar or to simply look words
up in the dictionary: adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, subjunctions,
prepositions, pronouns, nouns and verbs included; altogether until now more
than 7.000 words with tenthousands of forms.

With the adjective-database you can study declension, comparative and
superlative and adverb-forms. You can look up and practice conjugation of
imperfective and perfective regular and irregular (reflexive) verbs in all
tenses. The nouns-database helps you look up and practice all cases and
modi of regular and irregular nouns. Grammar- and thematic-groups help you
keep a better overview and gain better access to its contents.

To run the module you need the program 'Verbs and Nouns' available from
Info-Mac mirrors. The module is regularly updated and enlarged. Feel free
to easily enter your own vocabulary; you are effectively supported by
"verbs&nouns" stem-procedures-generator and the predefined Russian grammar
rules. With "verbs&nouns russisch" and the "verbs&nouns lookup"-program you
are able to perform spell-checks out of every text-editor-program and word
by word translation of any text.

Subject: [*] Word Find v1.5

Word Find is a program that creates word find (aka word search) puzzles. It
allows words to be entered directly into the program or imported from a text
file.

Word Find allows the user to customize the puzzle by selecting the size of the
puzzle, the font to be used, the directions the words can be hidden in, and the
size of font. The method that is used to hide the words in the puzzle can
also be
selected to create a puzzle where the words are as interconnected as possible or
sparsely interconnected.

Word Find also allows the user to select which characters are to be used in the
puzzle. Any ASCII character can be selected as valid. This allows the user to
make puzzles using non-English fonts, or puzzles using symbols or numbers.

Word Find provides capabilities to print the puzzle or save it to a file. Files
created by Word Find are text files that can be directly imported into any word
processor. The puzzle image can also be copied as a PICT image, to be
pasted into
another word processor or drawing program. Printing options include the ability
to put a title on the puzzle and/or print a field for filling in a person's name
(particularly useful for Teachers).

Version 1.5 now features:
- Support for Drag & Drop
- Support for the Appearance Manager when drawing the progress bar while
hiding words
- Uses only letters entered in the words when the "Use for filling unused
spaces" preferences option is not selected
- Minor changes to the splash screen and "About..." screens
- Some bug fixes

Version 1.5 is now a fat binary.

Requires System 7.

It's true. I have a Powerbook G3 hooked up to a MAGMA box. In it, I've got
an Apple PC Compatibility Card (running Win95 for testing), an ATI video
card for my primary monitor (I use the Powerbook screen as a second

I've got the same model. A few times now after a crash I've had those
symptoms. I've usually just powered the unit down from the power
switch on the CPU and let it sit to contemplate its sins for a couple
of minutes and then started up. That's always worked fine. On the
other hand, one of the 7600s I look after at work requires that I
disconnect the power cable and let it sit before restarting. Just
powering down is not enough.

Have you tried pulling some of the RAM, maybe in rotation - like
testing series-Xmas-tree light bulbs. Bad RAM could do that. If your
RAM is all in one 32Mb DIMM then I realize this won't help but if it's
a couple of 16s then try it. It could also be a SCSI problem. If there
are any external devices then disconnect them. If there aren't
externals, then try disconnecting (one at a time) the internals. Try
booting from a CD with the internal drive disconnected and visa-versa.
Is there a second internal drive? Check the SCSI address to be sure
it's not conflicting with the main internal (probably at "0" on bus
"0").

Tell me how it works out.

Hello Dudley,

I had the same problem. The problem was that Eudora 4.0 installed an
updated version of the "Appearance Extension" I believe it was version
1.0.2.

The fix was to revert to the older version - "Appearance Extension v1.0.1"

This is a bug, ahem, unannounced feature in 5.1. I too have had it. The
twiddle you want is called FixWordSystemMemory and you can search for it
via AltaVista. It's a small extension which solves those problems.
Freeware, and no hassles. The hqx also generates a readme which explains
how the bug occurs. No need to buy RAM just cos Bill's boys couldn't suss

Not a control strip module, but damn useful and able to do exactly what you
describe is ApplWindows (sic - there's no 'e' on Appl), which is a freeware
control panel that will let you whizz between all the open windows, even of
apps that are hidden, whether from the menu or by other apps. No more
WindowShading.

You can also configure it to have "hotspots", including the edges of the
screen, so that you can move to any window in any app without having to
return to the menu. I often use it to move between windows in the app I
have open, rather than going all the way back up to the top of the menu.
Its writer deserves a big medal, but would probably settle for a drink and
your undying gratitude. (I'm not the writer.) It's robust software which
causes no crashes. (Caveat: I don't know if that is true for 8.x, but
suspect it should be.) Find it via Altavista or archive sites.

Subject: [Summary] Japanese on USA MacOS

Thanks to everyone who replied to my questions about reading Japanese web
pages on USA versions of MacOS.

In the interim between my posting and the digest in which it appeared, I
tried a few products, and the two major ones are Elixir and PanALE
(Oriental Express). I registered Elixir, and I EVENTUALLY got it working
(I was doing something stupid - I forgot to select SJIS encoding from the
browser's View menu) but soon decided it wasn't very good, as it has only
bitmapped fonts, which look horrible when they're drawn at unusual sizes.

A much better product is PanALE, which supports Chinese (big5 and GB),
Japanese (JIS/SJIS) and Korean (wansung) encodings. It includes several
simplified and traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean character sets,
and it's only USD$20. Best of all, they are TrueType fonts, which is very
very very very very good :-) It even includes "sort of" an input method -
registering PanALE gives you a registration for Unicorn Editor as well. I
don't find Unicorn Editor to be very stable, but (a) it might have been a
pre-release version, and (b) I don't want an input method anyway - I only
want to be able to read Japanese Web sites.

Several people suggested the Apple JLK. Yes, that's very nice, but it's
much more expensive. I haven't tried that option.

So PanALE gets my vote - it's cheap, the character sets are VERY nicely
drawn, and it's the best-integrated of the shareware packages available.

There are elegant little control strip modules for doing just this. I like

I'm having a problem, with Eudora Pro 3.1, which is rather small but it is
driving me crazy. That is it disconnects when I am reading my mail or

am told is that my server is disconnecting me because it senses inactivity.
But this doesn't make sense to me.

My server says that he disconnects after 30 minutes of inactivity. I have
not found this to be true. There have been many times when I have had my
email open but I have been working on something else, or been away from my
computer, for much longer than 30 minutes and have not been disconnected.

Well tonight I couldn't sleep so I decided to read my email. I was
disconnected 17 minutes into the session.

Why do I get disconnected when in Eudora but not at other times when I am
not active.

I know to get around this I can write my emails off line and then
reconnect, which is what others have suggested, which I end up doing anyway
since I am disconnected.

Any ideas

You've probably installed a recent version of Eudora. There is a problem
with the new version of the Appearance Manager extension which Eudora
installs (v1.0.2). If you have v1.0.2 installed, and try to double-click
on the System file, you will get an error message stating that the System
file is damaged. It turns out that this is a bug caused by v1.0.2, and
the System file really isn't damaged. According to Apple, if you need to
add or remove items from the System suitcase (sounds, keyboard layouts,
etc.), you should duplicate the System file, open it and make the desired
changes, then close the copy of the System. Drag the original System file
to the trash, rename the copy of the System file "System" and make sure
it is at the root level of the System Folder, then restart. When the
computer has finished booting up, empty the trash to delete the old
System file.

I have had this problem. I cured it once by making a copy and getting
Res Edit to Verify it on opening, Later I just made a compressed copy of
the file for replacment if it causes problems. Make a copy of a good
system suitcase and keep it archieved for this situation. I'm not sure
what the cause is but know that System 8.1 is more touchy about the
system suitcase than earlier OS's. Sorry I can't offer a way to avoid
the problem. It appears that these are fragile items that because they
are almost always open dring a system crash, they can easily be damaged.

Hi all.

Setup: G3 266Mhz Desktop machine, running MacOS8.1, connected to an
ethernet hub via the ethernet port (of course) and to a modem via the modem
port. The ethernet hub is also connected to another Mac (Performa 5200CD)
and to a LaserWriter Select, the latter via an Asante Print box. AppleTalk
goes through the ethernet ports on both Macs, and so both can use the
printer. I'm also connected to my ISP's cable modem through the ethernet

Anyway ... It appears as if nothing is going through the printer port.
When I connect an ImageWriter (needed for making banners) and issue a print

the printer port and fire up the MIDI software, nothing happens when I
press the keys on the keyboard. I have made sure to disable AppleTalk when
I connect up either of these devices.
