Subject: [*] "Styles" Dusty Rose K2, Plain Cursor for K2

Dusty Rose is a muted dusty rose colored scheme featuring lovely
roses in the scrollbars. This version has a plain cursor rather than the
rose cursor of the original version. The scheme has K2 windows, disclosure
triangles, desktop pattern, utility pattern, windowshade soundfile,
tabbed pop-up windows, patterned menubar, menu, finder header, and
window background, and custom cursor, all written in, along with
custom folders and trash. A separate folder of desktop patterns is also
included with the scheme. There is a stunning new Bill Paris rose
desktop picture created to match the scheme. Not cut and pasted, but
hand-drawn, pixel by pixel, it can only be used in K2. Shareware.

Thanks much,

Abusatron is a nasty little program that enables your Mac to scream random
obsenities at you.
It's perfect if you are feeling a little over-confident and need to be
brought down a peg, or if you just happen to be a masochist. Everybody
benefits from a little psychological abuse now and then.

It's Freeware!

It's absolutely free. Gratis. No charge. Send no money. However, I
would like to receive an e-mail if you use it. I've tried a few
experiments in freeware distribution and I'm always keen to see where these
things end up; so let me know what city and country you are from. (THIS IS
STRICTLY FOR MY PERSONAL GRATIFICATION!) If you give Abusatron away to
others, please include this Read Me.

System Requirements

Abusatron should work on any Mac. Headphones are recommended if using at
work or in front of little kiddies.

Subject: [*] Anonymous(tm) 1.2.1

Have you ever wondered what your font is missing? Line feeds, the Apple
characters like the Apple symbol and many more appear as blank boxes in lots of
fonts. Almost all of the Macintosh characters, including decimal 1-24 and
218-255, and many not in ProFont, are now visible in Anonymous(tm).

Anonymous is a nonproportional or monospaced 9 point bitmap font designed for
programming, and for distinguishing between characters that can easily be
confused in the Macintosh reserved ROM font Monaco 9. For example, in the Monaco
9 bitmap, an uppercase O looks like a zero, and a lowercase L looks like an
uppercase i. Anonymous has a beautiful overall color when set into text, and is
easy to read in long stretches. The font's name begins with A for easy access in
font menus.

Bitmap only, not for printing. Recommended for those who are looking for a
monospaced serif font and have found Monaco, ProFont and Courier wanting,
and for
those who spend a lot of time typing and reading on a monitor.

New in 1.2.1: An email address change.

Subject: [*] BitMapMusic 1.41

BitMapMusic is a free music notation program, suitable for notating a
few lines of music. It's good for those situations where you don't want
to be bothered with anything much more complicated than "click and
drag". That said, I don't think that this is the tool for your next
symphony.... :-)
Printed output, while limited to the screen resolution, is reasonable
enough to read
comfortably. BMM can also export to PICT format, making it a useful
tool for Music-As-Graphics.

Version 1.41 fixes a few minor bugs.
Version 1.4 resolves a conflict with Mac OS 8.0 and 8.1.

Subject: [*] CiNDY

CiNDY is useful to organize Tombola (Bingo) games. Usually the game is built
over one set of 48 cards of 15 numbers.
If you organize public games, you know that often there are a lot of players!
So, you need to enhance the play, increasing the number of cards to play.
CiNDY resolve forever the problem.
CiNDY was projected to build large sets of cards, very large! You can build
sets frow few tens to 1500 cards! Every card can contains also 25 numbers.
Every card is different from every other, they are balanced (every number is
used the same number of times) and progressively numbered. The program can
print the cards on paper. Finally, it can export data in two formats.
Great for Christmas days, it's very easy to use, and its interface is very
well projected.
You can build many different sets, obtaining very different profiles of game.
Using a simulator, the program shows you how one game evolves on average.
It's useful also for playing with kids, so they can spoil the cards.
CiNDY exists for Macintosh and for Windows, and is Shareware.

Da Vinci Startup Screen
7/21/98

The da Vinci Startup Screen is a freeware 16-bit startup screen based on
Leonardo
da Vinci's study of human anatomy, "Vitruvian," which has come to symbolize for
many the concept of balance and order (it is truly an "icon"). It comes in two
sizes: one to fit on a 15-inch monitor set at 640 x 480 resolution, the other
sized for a 15-inch screen set at 832 x 624 resolution. Both are centered above
the midpoint to provide room for two rows of init and cdev startup icons. Both
images include the caption, "Welcome to Mac OS" in anti-aliased text.

To use the da Vinci Startup Screen, place the file you wish to use (either the
high or low resolution version) into the root-level of your System Folder (i.e.,
not inside any of the folders inside the System Folder). Leave its name "Startup
Screen." When you next restart your Macintosh, the da Vinci Startup Screen will
replace the normal Mac OS startup screen.

You are welcome to do your own adaptations for other monitor resolutions and
sizes. If you do so, make sure to preserve it in a usable "Startup Screen"
format. Several graphics applications (e.g., SuperPaint) and perhaps some
utilities are able to save and/or convert files into the proper format.

While I can't imagine any particular incompatibilities, I would guess it will
slow down for a few moments the startup sequence for older systems. If it slows
down your system too much, or for some unforeseen reason causes your system to
freeze at startup, restart with extensions off (hold down the shift key during
startup) and remove it from your System Folder--then restart.

Enjoy!

Digital Diary is a project management center that gives you
fingertip access to the current status of any of your projects, allowing
you the ability to go back to see all activities on all projects on any day
you choose. On a complex project, there could be a dozen or more separate
issues being dealt with at the same time, each of which has its own
distinct status and decision process. Wouldn't it be great to be able to
pull up the history of each of these issues at any time?

Digital Diary organizes note entries into project and day files so that
current reports of all activities on any given day or project can be
instantly viewed. Projects are organized under user-defined categories in a
hierarchical pop-up menu. Projects can be easily transferred between
categories, making it ideal for use as a convenient project status
indicator. Entries are identified with a header containing the type of
activity, project name, category, note number, and date and time of entry.
'To do list' entries will pop up to remind you of unattended items at a
chosen future date. Versatile report generation can gather, for example,
all notes of a given activity type or project status.

Subject: [*] English-Polish Dictionary (Demo) - language learning

The 'English-Polish Dictionary' is a module for the 'Verbs & Nouns' and
'V&N Lookup' programs. It will be useful to Poles who are learning English
and to English speakers who are learning Polish. The Demo version consists
of 6,600 English words (letters a to c). The complete version consists of
32,000 English words. I am continually improving and enlarging this
dictionary.

The 'Verbs & Nouns' application allows you to add new entries and modify
the existing entries, to add comments to every word, search for the English
word or its Polish translation, and do translation exercises.

With 'V&N Lookup' you can translate English text into Polish
(word-for-word), search for English or Polish words, check spelling, and
add comments to existing words.

You can download the latest version of 'Verbs & Nouns' and 'V&N Lookup'
from Info-Mac mirror sites. They are located in the directory
info-mac/edu/lang. More information you can find on my home-page

Subject: [*] Eudora Batch Find 1.0 AppleScript

I'd like to submit this utility to the info-mac collection. It's an
AppleScript that implements batch searches for Eudora for the Macintosh
(versions 1.5 to 4.0.1, the latest at the time of writing).

Despite some limitations it still has (see the documentation for an
extensive list), it should work well enough to be useful. You can specify
some text that will be searched in a single mailbox, a set of mailboxes or
all your mailboxes in one go. A list of messages that contain matches is
displayed, and a click on the summary of a message shows the top of the
body text of that message; it is also possible to open that message in
Eudora or tell Eudora to reply to it (i.e. open a new message to the
sender, as if you had selected the "Reply" command in Eudora's "Message"
menu).

Note that you need to install some Scripting Additions before you can run
this AppleScript (apart from the one included, appropriately named "Batch
Find OSAX"); a html file with download addresses is part of the
distribution. All the necessary Scripting Additions are free. They are:
Dialog Director v0.7, Jon's Commands and GTQ Library (from which only the
Sort command is needed).

This utility is free; AppleScript source is included, although the file is
too large to be opened in Apple's Script Editor. However, there's also a
pure text version, so one can open it in a word processor and copy parts of
it into own's own scripts.

The attached StuffIt archive has a size of 356 KB. The archive contains the
following files (with size):

Read Me First (37 KB)
Batch Find Manual (80 KB)

   Batch Find.txt (76 KB)

Batch Find OSAX folder:

Find In Files searches a set of files (or all files) for some text.

Why would you use Find In Files? Here's an example: Suppose you have a
bunch of HTML documents, and one or more of them has some information you
need. You could open every one of the files and search them by hand, or
use Find In Files to search for you. Simply enter some key words in the
"Search For" text area, optionally enter the file search type, select the
folder where the search begins, and click on Search. Find In Files returns
with a list of files that contain the text, along with a text snippet.

Subject: [*] Gantt Chart for FMPro

Here is a freeware contribution, a FileMaker Pro solution to the challenge
of charting, as bars graphed over time, a series of events, across a page
beginning at the left side with the earliest beginning time and ending with
the latest ending time of any of the bars. This, (so I have been told) is
called a Gantt chart. This, (so I have also been told, after posting
exasperated questions in this very venue), is something you just can't DO
in Excel. There are charting solutions out there, apparently, that will,
and probably they would willingly snatch up exported data from other
applications, but I didn't feel like shelling out for another program just
for this one capability, and probably a few other folks feel the same way.

The interface is simple: each bar (item) is a record; create a new record,
enter start date, end date (in its current form it does not accept time
entries as opposed to date entries, although since it isn't
password-protected you are welcome to modify the field defs), go to next
entry, and when completed run a script (visible in the Script menu) that
will calculate the earliest start date and latest end date in order to
graph the collection as a Gantt chart.

The enclosed file comes equipped with global color fields allowing the user
to set a different color for each entry, selectable via a drop-down menu.

The file is easily scriptable from other FMPro solutions: create new
record assumes an item name is in the clipboard, and if a relationship is
defined on the basis of that item name, you can assign start and end dates
from afar, and end by calling the script that figures minimum start date
and maximum end date and prints or displays the resultant graph.

Using FileMaker import, you can also begin with a spreadsheet or
tab-delimited textfile consisting of item name, start date, end date.

This solution is a CPU exerciser; you can watch it draw each row's bar on a
300MHz G3 (12-15 second screen draw), and on a IIci you find yourself
anticipating the result of each pseudopixel thereof as it is calculated (go
get a cup of coffee).

272K (at least on my HD), requires FileMaker Pro 3.x or higher,
cross-platform insofar as I can tell.

Subject: [*] GrafEq 2.05 68K - Mathematical relation graphing software

Here is a fully-functional evaluation copy of GrafEq 2.05, a program for
graphing, and exploring, mathematical relations. It is designed to be used
for learning and teaching high school math - it is more reliable (it will
produce correct graphs even for "tricky" relations) and easier to use
than other graphing programs, although it is not yet as feature-rich.

New for GrafEq 2.05:

  - The aspect ratio for graphs is no longer forced to be 1:1.

  - A tutorial on McLaurin approximations has been added to the manual.

  - 64 example graphs are now included. Most of the examples are
visually attractive, and include tesselations and half-toned
images. All are defined using mathematical relations which
    you may edit.

Some relations to try include: (type them as below, or cut & paste)

         x^2+y^2=25 y=sine^x
         y=Arctan9^9^9(x-1)                  y=arccosx
         y<sqrtx y=x/sinx

The above relations will often expose problems in other graphing programs,
and help to illuminate the differences in graphing approaches. Please send
