Certainly it is possible. Let's see... using a Power Mac you've got 16
bit analog inputs (good) with noisy analog to digital convertors (not so
good), so I'd recommend a sound card. A common choice is the Digidesign
Audiomedia III for PCI Macs, or the Audiomedia II for Nubus Macs. Hook
the line outputs of the amp into the analog inputs of the soundcard (or
if you don't mind the noise floor) into the computer with a standard
dual RCA cable.

Next, dump the sound from the record album into the computer. You will
need a sound editing program that can do that, such as Sound Designer
II, Bias Peak, SoundEdit 16, or Sonic Solutions. This will take at
least as much time as the album, plus cleaning time, flipping time, etc.
so figure an hour and a half average per album. You will need
approximately 650 megabytes of free hard drive space, and it is always
safer to have a lot extra, so figure at least a gigabyte. Use the
program that you used to get the sound into the computer to edit off
extra junk at the front and end of each side of the album, connect the
two sides into one whole, and put in markers for where each song begins
and ends. This process and the necessary time will vary with each
program, but unless you go all out and get Sonic Solutions, expect it to
take at least another hour and a half. You also need a program to burn
the actual CD such as Toast, Jam, or Masterlist CD. Sometimes the
markers (called P and Q codes) for song beginnings and endings are added
in the burning program, sometimes they are imported from your editing
program. Adding the markers will of course add extra time to the
process. Time for burning the CD will vary with the speed of your
burner, but assuming a 2x burner, estimate an average of a half hour.

So, it will probably take roughly four hours of work on your part to do
the transfer of each album. Definitely possible, but for a huge
collection it is probably cheaper for you to buy new CDs for those
available.

Good luck,

Trevor Zylstra

You won't find any file named "CloseView" by scanning the Mac OS 8.x
CDs, because the files are compressed into "tomes."

CloseView is not part of the standard Mac OS 8.x installation, but
CloseView v7.2.1 (June 20, 1997) can be custom-installed from the MacOS
8.1 CD. If you try to custom-install it from the Mac OS 8 CD onto Mac
OS 8.1, you may or may not encounter a problem (it SHOULD work ok).

Using the Mac OS 8 disc (I don't have 8.1, but it should be similar),
bypass the installer umbrella program, which opens various installers
in sequence. You want to go direct to the system software installer.

Open the folder named "Software Installers," then "System Software,"
then "Mac OS 8," then open the Installer icon. If you're using the 8.0
CD, ignore the message that it cannot install on the current 8.1 disk
(it's true for easy install, but not necessarily for custom install).
Choose Custom Install, then Universal Access, and you'll see CloseView.

Hope this helps. Cheers,

It's doable, but it will be a labor-intensive project requiring some
considerable audio engineering and drive storage space. Check the Tidbits

Simon:

I'm having a *very* similar problem on my Power Computing Power Center
210 Mhz system. It started under MacOS 8.0 (I never upgraded to 8.1).
The problem has survived an upgrade to 8.5, upgrade to the newest FWB
HD Toolkit SCSI HD drivers, CDROM Toolkit, DIsk First Aid picks up
no problems, Virex (just purchased) picks up nothing. I suspected
FWB CDROM toolkit since the problem often occured just before or just
after it's ICON appeared in extension loading.

I've torn off the enclosure and made sure every connector and memory
module is seated well twice. I've zapped the PRAM from power-on many
times.

The problem started as a failure to boot on power up--extensions started
to load but then stopped somewhere during the process; doing a single
reset from the keyboard (Control-Command-Powerkey) caused the system
to boot always. Thenonce I got it up, the system was reliable.

But the problem progressed to where even a keyboard reset may not boot
the system--even several resets. This past Saturday (1/2/98), I did a
clean 8.5 install. Things seemed OK, I started loading 3rd party soft-
ware from scatch, then rebooting. When I loaded Stuffit 5.0 and rebooted
I got a failure to boot. I disabled True Finder Integration, but the
problem persisted. The freeze can now occur at system startup or after
booted when changing programs or folders quickly as yours (Simon's) seems
to The only SW I can think that I installed just prior to the problem was
Palm Pilot Desktop SW, which often had difficulty Syncing and was ripped
out--I think.

I'm pretty much at the end of my rope now. My system at home, a Power
Computing Power Tower 200 Mhz (non-Pro) system has almost the same SW
comfiguration, and it behaves fine.

Hard disk problem? I'm doing things by trial and error right now. It's
extremely time consuming and that's our most precious resource these
days. I can't afford to just start going into a parts swapping mode
and don't really want to send it in for repairs--which it may not need.

*Any* help would be appreciated. Email me direct (and post) if you'd
prefer.

TIA,
Pete

I agree that it is very annoying not to be able to do a simple delete of the
patterns. But here is a little tutorial on how to delete the built-in patterns
using ResEdit. Note that before you follow the instructions on this page,
you should look at your collection of pattens and write down the names

People have to create themes and distribute them just as they do with
Kaleidoscope themes. Kaleidoscope themes require Kaleidoscope to work.
Appearance themes are separate items and are installed in the folder called
Theme Files inside the folder called Appearance, inside your System folder.
There have been a couple of Apple themes available on the web, but they
were themes that someone found and posted - Apple did not officially
release them. I tried two of them and had trouble with my computer right
away, and dumped them.

Here's the URL for the place I originally downloaded a couple of them. They
are no longer posted, as they belonged to Apple and were not legally
distributed. However, you can get replacement SoundSets there for for
Appearance Control Panel. http://themes.hellyeah.com/

I still run Kaleidoscope and have no problems with it under 8.5.

>>> Short Answer >>>

You may not be running JPEGView per say (as Bruce Giles suggested), but
I'll bet you are running some other graphics programs and your monitor is
set to 256 colors. Quiting the other application will probably resolve the
problem. Restarting certainly would.

>>> Long Answer >>>

In 256 color mode your computer uses the electronic equivalent of "paint by
the numbers".

The video card uses what is called a hardware color look up table (CLUT).
It's a palette of the 256 colors that can be displayed on the screen at one
time. To draw a pixel with a particular color, the computer writes the
index value (0 to 255) of the color into a byte in the screen buffer. The
video hardware then reads the index and looks up the actual (24 bit RGB)
color in the table.

To invert a color the computer takes the complement of the index value (0
becomes 255, 1 becomes 254, 2 becomes 253, etc.). The palette manager tries
to organize the palette so that complementary colors are at complementary
indexes in the table. Index 0 is white and 255 is black. If index 40 was
light green then index 215 would be dark magenta.

The Macintosh palette manager also has a special complement formula used
for text that results in the text and background changing to those you have
selected in the Appearance Manager control panel.

However, all of this breaks down when another application changes the color
palette. Many graphic applications request that the palette manager change
the entries in the CLUT so that it can display colors other than those in
the default 255 palette supplied by the operating system.

When this happens, the palette manager *tries* to keep the color and text
inversion consistent using whatever colors it has been given by the
application. But there are limits and sometimes it's just impossible.
Imagine a color palette that consisted entirely of shades of sepia. You're
highlight color might be light blue, but there isn't a blue color anywhere
in the palette. In situations like these, the palette manager just does
the best it can.

Sometimes quiting the other graphic application solves the problem since
the OS will (should) forget about those colors and go back to using it's
standard colors. Of course, restarting the computer reloads everything
from scratch and would certainly resolve any anomalies left in the CLUT by
an application.

Yes you can, if you want to create an AppleTalk network. Phone wire is
part of it but, What you need are PhoneTalk connectors. PhoneTalk
connectors are dongles with two RJ11 (telephone) jacks on one end and an
AppleTalk serial plug on the other. You can find these in the Mac
catalogs, but not as often since the adoption of Ethernet. Two of the
more well known makers are Asante and Farallon.

You will need three PhoneTalk connectors to complete this job. First
plug one PhoneTalk connector into your Mac's printer port. Next plug a
length of phone wire into an empty RJ11 jack. Run the length of phone
wire to the first printer and connect it with a second PhoneTalk
connector. Now plug in a second length of phone wire and run it to the
last printer and connect it with the third PhoneTalk connector. Do not
make a ring.

All that is left to do is turn on AppleTalk in the chooser and you are
done. If you have an older Mac sitting around in the basement or a
closet, you can add it to your network also and it can share the two
printers. Even a Mac that is too slow to work on can still make a great
print server for those jobs that would otherwise bog down your working
Mac. Simply copy the file to the older Mac and open and print it from
there, this leaves your Mac free to work.

Good Luck

Subject: how to use two printers on a G3?

Michael,
I think what someone meant by "three phone cords" was that you
should just set up a LocalTalk network. You buy the LocalTalk adapters for
about $12 each at a computer store. You plug one into each printer's
LocalTalk port, and one to the printer port at the back of the computer.
You connect them with (4-strand) phone cables (look at the end of the
little plastic plug on the phone cord and make sure you see 4 copper
cable-ends shining in there).
They "daisy chain" - each adapter has two plug openings in it. So
once the adapters are attached to each device, you run a phone cord from
one plug in, say, the computer, to one plug in the first printer. Then get
another phone cord. Plug one end into the second plug of the adapter on the
first printer and run it to the first plug in the adapter on the second
printer. Come to think of it you are now nearly done. You use the tiny
terminators (plugs with no cord attached) that came with (or should have
come with) the adapters, and use a terminator to fill the second plug in
the adapter on the computer, and another terminator in the empty second
plug on the second printer. Now you have a LocalTalk network.
You will need to set your AppleTalk control panel to Printer Port
(because you want the network to communicate via the printer port, using
AppleTalk protocol).
You should now be able to select either printer in your Chooser.
Actually, I just downloaded, but have not tested, a piece of
shareware called Printer Switch (got it at VersionTracker, as something
updated for OS 8.5) that is supposed to let you switch printers from within
applications without going to the Chooser at all.
Please excuse me if I have "taught you how to chew soft bread" here!

I am not sure if you are entirely serious, but since it's not April 1st
let's have a go. If the personal laserwriter is an SC, LS or 300 you
can't network them (without another computer to act as host). If an NT,
NTR or 320 you can and you would need three appletalk boxes and the
cables that come with them. If they can't be networked you have several
solutions that come to mind (and probably others that don't).
1. A switch box for the modem/printer. You would also need to use the
chooser to select printers.
2. A switch box to select printer/printer. You would also need to turn
Appletalk on and off in the chooser as well as select printers.
3. A PCI serial card which would have an additional serial port(s) such
as the ones made by Keyspan.
4. If you don't use the modem a lot then an extension serial lead would
enable you to easily change from modem to printer without getting behind
the computer.

A USB switch for iMacs wouldn't help. In fact I haven't seen one, I guess
it is to allow two iMacs to use one printer. As a matter of interest does
anyone know if you can connect two iMacs to one printer via a hub?

It sends small ICMP ECHO_REQUESTS to a server, and gets the results.

If there is one that's been created.. can I please have the URL?

If there hasn't been, would somebody throw together an app that will do that?

Thanks.

Subject: Note pad not working

Happy new year info-mac readers.

I have lost the use of my note pad file. When I try to open it via the
Apple menus (or directly) I get the message:

>The document 'Note Pad File' could not be opened because the applicaton
>that created it could not be found.
Could not find translation extension with appropriate translation.<

I recently made my HDs HFS+ (internal and external) using Alsoft's
PlusMaker, but I am sure that the Note Pad File worked after I did so.
Surprisingly I have a backup of the system folder on my external HD, but
when I switch to that HD as the startup one I still get the same message
that the Note Pad could not be accessed.

Does anyone have an idea how I can get it to work again? And how could this
glitch have occurred?

I am running system 8.5.1 on a PowerComputing 150.

Thanks,
> Ezra

I've been using OT/PPP with my 3Com X2/.v90 modem since I bought two
modems for two different computers.

The only thing I had to do was go to 3Com's websight and download their
High Speed modem script. Once I put the CCL into the modem folder inside
the Extensions folder, I seleted that script from the modem control panel
and I connected at 56k speeds.

So, I can testify that OT/PPP will indeed support 56k whether it is x2 or
v.90.

untrue... OT/PPP *does* support v.90.... i know because i have connected

OT/PPP *will* work with v90, but it needs the correct modem script. I have
one for the USRobotics56kx2v90 I'll send on request (the "US Robotics
Universal" modem script included with 8.1 won't work with v90s).

But, like Gavin, I also recommend FreePPP, which has worked fine for me
through Mac OS 8.1, if you can't get the right modem script for OT/PPP.

And I'll say this again: Apple's modeming support is pathetic. They insist
on making simple procedures complex, if not impossible.

The only way a handheld PC runnig Windows CE is compatable on a Mac is
through either SoftWindows95/98, Virtual PC running Windows 95/98/NT or
an PCI card that contains a PC motherboard (like OrangeMicro's) again
