Subject: (?) CorrectPrint 300

I just inherited a RasterOps CorrectPrint 300 printer. It came with, among
other goodies, two small (1/4" x 11") flourescent tubes. the people I got
it from don't know what the tubes are for, just that they were in with all
the other stuff (manuals, trays, etc.) so they sent them along.

I've looked around inside but haven't found anything likely.

Any ideas?

I understand the logic of this request but there might be some
practical reasons why you're not finding it.

To wit, any FTP program is essentially an interface to a verrry old
protocol with a limited (though powerful) set of commands. FTP
assumes only two 'sides' to a transaction - a local directory and a
remote directory. Even when you open multiple FTP 'sessions', each is
an individual conversation between a local and a remote. So you have
an interface that is executing some specific text commands (GET, PUT,
MGET, etc) between A & B, and another doing the same between A & C.
But there are no standard FTP commands that link sessions, B to C. So
any implementation like that would have to create "new" FTP commands,
a very iffy proposition for a somewhat obscure usage.

Or you'd define a temporary local 'holding bay' and GET from B, then
PUT to C, while hiding the multiple commands from the user. (Not a
bad method - hmmmm..)

The above rambling is pure opinion, not being offered as an industry
position or anything weighty, just one opinion of why a developer
mightn't do something which seems so straightforward.

No, AGNetTools is not free. It's $34.95. It's free with the purchase
of EtherPeek ($850) or TokenPeek ($495). Ouch!

Subject: [Fwd: Returned mail: User unknown]

I have a small window of opportunity here, and hope for some wisdom in
time. I have been running a web site for my project at work for a year or
two now. The military now insists that all such web sites be protected with
passwords. I have been running the site on a Windows machine running NT. I
asked the Sys Admin, in full confidence, to set up password protection for
the home page of the site, thinking that the NT server surely would have
that ability.

There is a problem with it. As far as I can understand it, NT somehow
borrows security code from its intranet serving security. Anyway,
apparently, to make the site present a request for user name and password,
I have to create accounts for every potential user on the system, and then
once they would access the site using that name, they would then have
access to our whole network. Well, that may be true or not, I'm not sure. I
just know that all the network people on our military base think it's
insecure to use NT to set up passwords for the web site.

So now I'm looking for options. I just want to limit access to the web site
by having someone type user name and password before they can see the home
page over the internet. I tried setting up IP address access, but it only
worked for users on the local network. Anyone behind a firewall at remote
locations was unable to access the site.

It has been suggested that I put Linux on the machine and run Apache.
That's pretty extreme, as we also run some FileMaker Pro data bases on the
server, and that would kill those data bases. I'm pretty sure that I could
set it up with a Javascript, but I've done that before and it didn't work
for anyone accessing the site from a Unix box.

To get to the point, I wondered if I convinced them to get me an Apple
server, would it let me set up password protection of the web site? Has
anyone done that? If it's possible at all, is it difficult? As the rest of
the network is Windows and NT machines and HP laser printers, would an
Apple server interfere with their ability to access the printers and each
other? If the Apple solution would work, and work well, I am going to go to
the wall to get it. I've wanted an Apple server from day one, and this may
be the deciding factor that would let it happen.

Feedback urgently welcomed. My home email is jessup@san.rr.com.
At work, where this problem exists, it is daly@visicom.com

Thank you.

Subject: Any low cost Mac-way to convert speech to text?

I seek info. from anyone who regularily converts speech to text using a
Mac. I am looking for a low cost way to produce text from continuous
speech, either by using a microphone connected to my computer (a
Performa 6300CD), or from the audio output of a small tape recorder I
use for taking notes when I am driving and at other times.

I don't require elegant voice recognition since I will be the only speaker.
A reasonable amount of errors would be acceptable, and it wouldn't
matter if some of the words were crude phonic representations because
I intend to edit the text anyway.

21 Century Eloquence advertises a Windows only system called
Dragon Naturally Speaking Mobile for approx. $300., including a
hand-held recorder with microphone. If the Dragon system is the
only one available, perhaps I could use it with Virtual PC, although
that would add cost and I''ve heard Virtual PC is slow, but I would
like to hear from anyone who has tried this approach.

Please contact me off-line at cesar@lava.net.

The relative ease of this depends on the format of the input file. In any
case, it shouldn't take longer than a couple minutes.

If there are no spaces or other unwanted white space, you can do it in a
single search-replace operation by simply replacing all return characters
("\r" (no quotes) in the Find dialog) with commas.

If the file is messier than that, you'll need to do it in a few steps.
Here's what I'd do:

1. Replace all double returns ("\r\r") with single returns. Repeat this
until no changes are made. This will eliminate blank lines.
2. Replace all returns ("\r") with commas.
3. Replace all space characters with nothing.
4. Replace all tab characters with nothing.

That should do it, assuming you don't want any spaces in the output file.

Michelle,

At the top of the find dialog box in BBEdit is a checkbox labeled "Use
Grep" - that's your magic ticket. :) Enabling that checkbox allows you to
use a wonderfully powerful feature called Regular Expressions. They're
tough to learn, but with a command over Regular Expressions, you can do
search and replaces that you never dreamed possible.

Anyhow, turn on the "Use Grep" checkbox. Now search for "$" (without the
quotes - just a dollar sign - trust me - the dollar sign means end-of-line)
and replace with ",". Click on Replace all, and you're done.

Try this:

Invoke the Find/Replace fuction
Have it Find <carriage return>
Have it replace it with <comma><space>
Have it Replace All

You'll end up with a single text block, comma-and-space separated.

(Try it on a small selection first to verify it does what you want.)

I believe the system will create a new one the next time it is needed.
There's no need to create one yourself.

If you're trying to create a folder of your own with that name, the only
thing to do is choose a different name like "Temporary_Items" or "Temporary
Things" or somesuch.

They dropped it from the GUI in 5.0, but it is still there. You have to customise a button bar to add the uppercase and/or lowercase button.

Alternatively, it can be scripted in AppleScript.

12. Oh yeah and throw in a new window view indicator to go along with

I usually refrain from reposting text, but I completely agree with the
above and feel it deserves even more exposure. I too have had this same
concept in mind for a while. I am not the calibre of programmer who
could do it, but I have corresponded with the authors of both Transit
and Internet Config about providing it.

The saddest part is that this exact concept has been available on the
Windows platform for sometime. maybe airing this fact will galvanize a
few programmers and illustrate a genuine pre-existing need which could
be filled with a product.

I have yet to pay for an FTP client or browser, but I would gladly pay
up to $25 for a quality shareware app like this, maybe higher if it were
written by Apple or of simular quality.

Failing that does anyone know of an FTP client for the Mac which has
source code in the public domain? Does AppleShare IP offer simular
features to those above?

There's a shareware item called "Okey-Dokey Pro" that will automatically
click "Okay" in a dialog like that after a user-specified interval. Or you
could do as I do, and use Rambunctious, a shareware RAM disk that will let
you shut down without giving that warning (you can set the options to save
the RAM disk contents or not). I keep one RAM disk saved, running Netscape
and some other applications I want to run very fast, and another RAM disk
that does not save its contents, for browser caches.

Hi,

I'm experiencing some strange memory behavior and sluggish performance
when downloading images with IE 4.5. As I download images the memory
that is shown being used by IE grows with each image, according to the
About This Computer dialog (I can leave this dialog open and actually
see the memory increase while images are downloading). It has grown to
as high as about 70MB, at which time the performance became _very_
sluggish (at which time I first looked at memory usage). This behavior
is repeatable every time.

I have a 6500/250 (603ev), OS 8.5.1, and have 96MB of RAM with virtual
memory turned on, using defaults (for me this 3072K for the cache and
1MB virtual memory). The memory for IE is set at 6000K. Even though
the memory for IE is shown as some value much larger than the preferred
setting, the Largest Unused Block does not reflect this, indicating
plenty of RAM still available. When the memory used by IE was displayed
as about 70MB, the Largest Unused Block was indicating about 60MB free.

I've looked at the memory usage with MemMapper and Peek-a-Boo and the
memory used by IE appears within normal ranges and nothing else looks
unusual (at least not to me). I have also tried turning virtual memory
off with the same results. Could this be some kind of a memory leak?
Thanks in advance...

A quick search of the Apple homepage for euro produced TechNote #1140.
It says that unicode support of the euro has begun with MacOS 8.5 in
most of the system fonts.

This link has more than you could possible want to know about the euro:

Go to Apple Support:

Click on "Support Index".
Under "Support Resources", choose "Apple Manuals".
Now search for "Powerbook 5300". You'll get three to choose from.

Hi,
I just received my DECEMBER 1998 issue of MacHome (not the JANUARY 1999
issue) of MacHome and there was no CD. In fact, I received the December and
January issues at the exact same time without a CD inside. It is mentioned
in the JANUARY issue, there was a problem with the CD for JANUARY, so this
is TWO months without a CD. They promise to take care of that in February.

Have other REGULAR subscribers experiencing this problem with the DECEMBER
issue of lateness and no CD? Was there a problem with the mailing list?
Free subscriber who get the issues when buying a Mac do not get the CD.

Other then that, MacHome is becoming superior to MacWorld, which is now
like a Sears catalog. It is fine to see that the advertising is booming in
Macworld, but they should increase the content to what it was before. It is
overpriced for the actual content. MacHome with the CD included is a better
buy for someone subscribing to only one Macintosh periodical.

Here's a method passed along from an acquaintance, who claims 100% success.

----
Use the SCSI Copy feature of Toast. Use this feature to select a Current
Mac OS CD. Before hitting OK, click Options=8AUse Blind Transfers and turn
off Clear Driver Descriptor Mac. Now hit okay on both windows. Set the Copy
field to the same number as Number of Blocks and hit okay. Now select Save
as Disk Image from the File menu. You can now mount the new disk image,
remove everything except the System folder (If you used the OS 8.5 CD, be
sure to update the CD's System folder to 8.5.1!) and then add your own
stuff.

You then use the "Disk Image" source type to select your new disk image and
burn it to CD.
----

If you have an IDE CD-ROM, then this method won't work. Perhaps you can
borrow a SCSI CD-ROM drive for a few minutes to make the disk image.

What a coincidence, so are we. We have a huge .PDF that is the star of
the show. We have decided that the best way to integrate the .PDF and
other media on the disk is with HTML. Sure we could jump through a dozen
hoops and buy some 'out there' media tool at $199 or more a pop (and get
so frustrated with it we vow to never use it again). But most
magazine/disk combos on the newstand use html.

First, make a pretty splash image with Iconizer (it makes a single image
into dozens of individual icons aligned in a grid. Next, make a
start.html and place it at the root level of the disk. Make an
eye-catching custom icon for it. Also place on the disk; a working
browser (make sure this browser is the creator of your start.html),
Adobe Acrobat reader, and the adobe acrobat web plugin and Apple
Quicktime plugin in the browsers plugin folder. All of which can be
distributed freely.

Now you can create a multimedia HTML document with animation and music.
Your .PDF file is only a click away with the web plugin. Best of all the
browser will continue to play your music from one open page as you
browse the .PDF in another page.

The best reason of all to use HTML is that is (almost) public domain.
Unlike 'serious' multimedia tools, you can view the source of any HTML
files you encounter. I'm not saying you should steal, but... Adobe is
currently giving out a free Hybrid Mac/PC disk called ironicly
'Guerrilla Marketing'. It doesn't feature music but it does feature all
of the above tricks.

As for the autostart features, it will be dependent on what version of
Windows/Mac OS the user has, whether autostart is enabled and on what
format you decide to use on the disk (i.e. hybrid, ISO9960, UDF, CD-i,
etc.). I have yet to experiment.

Good Luck

Later versions of QuickTime [> 2.5?] have an "Autoplay" feature, that
allows you to specify a program on the CD to be launched when the disk is
inserted.

In your case, the Autoplay thingy would be a script or program that would
look for installed copies of Acrobat and launch your catalog if one was
found. It could also launch the Acrobat installer, if you want it to.

Of course, that Autoplay thing only works if the user has the appropriate
version of QuickTime installed, and they have AutoPlay enabled. Many
people have this feature disabled as a defense against the Hong Kong Worm,
which uses this feature to spread.

Windows has a similar "AutoStart" mechanism, though it is not tied to
QuickTime.

it runs on an 8meg Mac. The only thing you must remember is to trash

I'd like to thank all that wrote regarding this problem. But I want to restate
that the hanging occurs with ALL pages just before they display and after
they've finished downloading. The screen goes blank and anything that was
displayed (markers, text, etc.) vanishes and the completed page with all its
elements gets displayed after the LONG pause. This is something that didn't
occur when I first upgraded from Netscape 3.x to 4.x. The OS in both cases was
8.1. So I feel that something else probably sabotaged Netscape (some Microslug

those who will need to be doing taxes shortly (boo, hiss) might be

I expect to be adding additional plug-ins for both those categories over

Answer: there is a problem with the site, not with your computer. I
downloaded the above script. What you have to do in cases like this, is
*hold down* the mouse button over the link and select a directory to save
the downloaded file to.

Create two folders in the "Documents" Folder. Call the first one "Download
Folder" and the other "Just Downloaded". Run "Stuffit Expander", and go
to preferences. Select "Download Folder" as your "watch" folder, and "Just
Downloaded" as your destination folder. (If you also have "Stuffit Lite"
and "DropStuff", do the same with them)

Sometimes downloaded items don't unstuff, in which case the file is usually
corrupt. But sometimes you can still unstuff them by running "Stuffit
Expander" after you come off line.
