Subject: (Q) Drive Setup and Unsupported Drives

I have a Maxtor LXT213SY c.200Mb hard drive but can't get it to be
'bootable'.

I can successfully format it using 'Third party' formatting utilities and
install a system on it. But even when selected as the startup disk, the Mac

doesn't recognise the disk at system start and defaults to the original
system disk.

I think (and this is pure speculation) that I need to run Apple's Drive
Setup
to make the disk 'bootable', but the application reports that it can't
modify
an 'unsupported drive'.

Anybody got any suggestions?

Regards.

Bryan Tucker.

Hi Scott,

They're at:

Macintosh HD:System Folder:Help:Mac OS Help:fp:shrd:

You can open the Dictionary of 'Application Switcher' in the Extensions
folder to find the specific parameters. There's also some Applescripts out
there that have an interface built in so you can choose the parameters
using dialogs.

They, and other AppleScripts, can be found in various places in the Help
folder inside the System folder. They have some weird names, though. The
ones you're particularly interested in can be found at:

Your HD Name:System Folder:Help:Mac OS Help:fp:shrd:

as

AppSwitcherLowerLeft
AppSwitcherLowerRight
AppSwitcherRestoreDefaults
fpShwAppSwtchr

You can also learn fun things by looking at the Application Switcher
extension dictionary with ScriptEdit (or another AppleScript editing
application).

I have the same machine at work and had the same problem. I created a
startup disk on a zip and use that for booting the Mac. Then I did a
clean install (I now have 8.1 on that machine). I suppose that if you are
doing a clean install you can boot from the internal hard disk as well,
but won't be able to update the hard disk driver. This could be a problem
if you use Apple's drivers, but I have used FWB's HDTC (v2.5.3) on this
machine so I wasn't concerned.

I also have found that the Apple CD ROM extension in system 7.6 is the
last one that will support the internal (IDE) CD drive in the Starmax.
After upgrading to system 8.0 and 8.1, the CD wouldn't work with the
newer driver, but replacing it with the older one works just fine. I'm
sure there is a way to use resedit to hack the driver and make it work,
but you don't have to bother. Just keep the 7.6 extension around when
upgrading or you can use FWBs CD ROM toolkit (most recent version 3.01 I
believe) which supports that CD just fine. Booting from the 7.6 install
CD was not possible for me.

Good luck,
Scott Horton

Subject: [Q] DOS card printing to Laserwriter Plus

I tried this on Apple's tech support forum, but got no response. So
I'll try here.

Problem: Cannot print from Windows 95 on a DOS card to a Laserwriter
Plus.

Configuration: Quadra 610 DOS, 486sx 25Mhz replaced by 486DX 50Mhz,
Mac OS 8.0, Windows 95.

Questions:
What type of printer should I configure Windows for? I am trying to
print from Windows 95 on the DOS card to a Laserwriter Plus. I assume
I can specify this printer for what it is, and not as an Epson. When I
try to print, this comes out:

       ERROR: undefined
       OFFENDING COMMAND: setlinewidth
       STACK:

       /Lw

Now, I know somewhere in the TIL it says, "Quadra 610 DOS + Centris
610 with 486sx (25Mhz) PC card are not compatible with Windows 95."
However, it works, possibly because I have used an online tip to swap
the chip for a 486DX/50Mhz. Everything works fine. I think this is
just a printer configuration issue.

Both Mac and DOS card have plenty of memory. Not much I can do to jazz
up the Laserwriter Plus (hey, it was free). Any ideas? Thanks.

Subject: G3 PB, 12" or 14"?

I know, I know this sounds like a snooty question but I'd really like
some input from you guys. I've had my PB 100 for the past 5 years and
it's earned it's retirement. I'm about to purchase (my wife's 50th B-Day
present to me) a G3 PB but which one? I'll basically use the new PB for
word processing (I'm a teacher) and downloading and manipulating jpegs
from my digital camera. Obviously the 14" for 2,499 with an additional
64 Mg RAM thrown in (MacMall) looks great as opposed to the 12"er for
1,999 which I thought was perfectly fine until I actually saw the 14".
The 2,499 is really pushing the price envelope. Is this just simple case
of monitor envy?
    1) If I go for the 14" are there enough resources (L2 cache, VRAM)
to power the PB properly?
    2) Or should I just get the 12"?
    3) What's currently the best place to purchase the PB?
Thanks for hearing me out and for any suggestions that you may have.

Subject: Net problem with 8.5.1

Can someone help with this problem, getting on to the net reliably?
(PowerMac 7300, running MacOs 8.5.1)

I have run TechTool Pro and Disk First Aid, Rebuilt the desktop, and
zapped the PRAM. I have removed the operating system (8.5.1)and
reinstalled MacOs 8.5 and re-updated to 8.5.1.
But even running with the original bare system, with NO additional
control panels or extensions added, the following intermittent failure
happens. Not every time I start up, but often. When I start my Mac up,
sometimes my ethernet connection comes up (fine), and sometimes it
doesn=92t.
In the latter case, I open Appletalk and find it set to Ethernet. It may
also say <looking for port information>. If I wait, sometimes it will
find a zone on our intranet, and then I can re establish contact with
the network. Other times the message changes to <no zones available>.
In this case I have to restart, and perhaps I will be on the net. It is
unpredictable.

I don=92t think the fault is in the hardware, because when I start up on
MacOs 8.1 (on a different partition of the same hard disk) it always
works.

So what should I do now? Is there a problem with Open Transport (2.0.2)?
Should I try substituting the Open Transport extensions from System 8.1
and seeing if they work better? Mike

Subject: Newton Battery Pack: summary of responses

Thanks to all who responded to my question on replacement rechargable
battery packs. Here is a summary of what I received in reply:

* I have a Newton MP 120; this was left out of the original note, and
changes the answer to the question of how to get spare batteries.

* Sources for "vintage" Apple/Newton parts are:
  - http://www.sunrem.com. You can get spare battery packs for the 2100,
but for the 120 you must exchange the battery you have (can't just order
    a spare).
  - One individual has used Rayovac rechargables and nothing else on his 2100.
  - Another writes: "FWIW, I bought 4 NiCad AAA batteries, put them in the Alkaline
battery holder, I had and put a small piece of tape in my MP100's
battery compartment to hold the small blue sensing switch in, at the
    end of the compartment."
  - (http://www.smalldog.com) has batteries for the MP 2100.
  - Most vendors do have battery rechargers and power adapters available for
    all models.

I have sucessfully used NiMh Individual cells with very good results.
The cells are from Radioshack and a NiMh charger as well is used to

Norton Utilities for the Macintosh (NUM) 4.0 handles HFS+ as well as
standard HFS drives. I think NUM is all we have for optimizing (not
TechTools or anything else).

Best to also download Symantec's patcher for Norton Disk Doctor 4.01 to see
if you need that, too. Hope you don't because it's a pain.

To: Info Mac
From: Ed Wright

Question-

I've been asked to resolve a minor issue with a PB 5300,
unfortunately none of the manuals can be found.

Various sources state the PB 5300 can be connected to another Mac
(desktop) via a SCSI type cable with the result the PB's HD will
appear as an external disk to the other Mac. I found what I believe
to be the correct cable (short - 10-11", grey) shut down
everything, plugged in, with a terminator between the SCSI cable
from the Q630 and the grey PB cacble, then restarted the PB. The PB
screen is blank until I start the other Mac (Q630), at which time
two arrows appear. Afterwards, the Q630 seems to stop.

So what I do wrong? I gave the PB a SCSI address in the SCSI Disk
Mode control panel, no other SCSI devices during the test.

Both Macs run 8.0, though the SCSI control panel on the PB is 7.3.2.
Any pointers, hints, a manual?

As always,
