Subject: [*] Muddy Water 1.3

Jake has gone off on a busman's honeymoon, leaving you to take in his mail and
feed his gerbil. Today's mail features a postcard from Revenue City, Nevada,
addressed to you--and the monthly newsletter of the APBB (that's Jake's
professional organization, the Adventurers' Protective and Benevolent
Brotherhood, better known by its slogan, 'Always Pillage Before you Burn.')
Your eyes are drawn irresistibly to the "This Month's Hot Spots" feature:
"...outlawed the Thieves' Guild. As a result, unlicensed thievery is
rampant and there's no mechanism for recovering stolen property. The official
sceptre has been stolen and, thanks to the shortage of accredited thieves,
nobody has been able to locate it. The ruler is offering a large reward and
full amnesty to the one who succeeds in restoring the sceptre and identifying
the original thief..."
That's all the invitation you need.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Mac with 256 or more colors, 12" or larger monitor, 32-bit QuickDraw, 2 (or
more) sound channels). Prefers 2.4 MB free RAM but can run on less.

Subject: [*] NewsTicker 1.6

Attached is NewsTicker 1.6, my latest update to my shareware NewsTicker.
Please place it on your wonderful site.

Thanks,
     Reuven

Among changes and additions to version 1.6 are:
 * The much awaited keyboard shortcuts are here, but with no UI yet:
- Use Command+Control+Escape to toggle the visibility of the NewsTicker
window.
- Use Command+Control+Right Arrow to load the next site immediately.
- Using the =95T keyboard combination when in the Tracked Sites panel of
the Preferences dialog toggles the tracking state of all
currently-selected sites (those being tracked will not be tracked and
vice-versa).
 * The Ticker Appearance panel now has a checkbox which can turn on or
off the underlining of headlines.
 * More control over Tracked Site Information.
 * NewsTicker now supports a "Local" preferences file (one placed next to
the NewsTicker application). This enables running more than one copy of
NewsTicker on the same machine with different settings.
(I use this to have one copy track stocks, another copy to track news.
Maybe in the future a third copy could track email...)
 * Faster site switching using a sub menu of the contextual menu which
enables switching between all tracked sites.
 * The NewsTicker window has more anchoring options.

Subject: [*] Align Utilities

Align Utilities - is a set of two AppleScript Drag & Drop applications,
Window Align and Icon Align, that are useful in improving the appearance of
disk and folder windows under Mac OS 8. Window align - positions windows of
desktop icons (which includes all disks) at the upper left corner of the
main screen, just below the Menu bar; all other folder windows are
positioned so that its left edge is aligned with that of its parent and its
title bar is just below the title bar of its parent. The width and height
of the window is corrected, if necessary, to conform with the Width=8A and
Height=8A preferences. An Option Key feature lets you position windows for
all sub-folders, sub-sub-folders, etc. Icon Align - aligns icons in a
window with icon view to a grid with 2, 3 or 4 columns and in a list view
window sets the View Options to Name only.
An Option Key feature lets you copy a List View of a window to all of its
sub-folders, sub-sub-folders, etc.

Subject: [*] Book of Decks.sit

I've been playing the game Magic: The Gathering=81 for several years now. I
finally decided that I wasn't very good at it. I played the actual game
well enough, but it always seemed that my decks were pretty weak.

So, I made the Book of Decks. Essentially it is a database of all of the
Magic: The Gathering=81 cards available. It also allows you to select from
these cards to assemble your own decks. As you assemble your decks the
software gives you feedback that helps you see your decks' weaknesses and
strengths. It will also give you suggestions to help you improve your
deck. It's a valuable tool. Please pay the rareware fee.

Subject: [*] CapsOff 1.1

CapsOff is a System Extension and Control Panel that disables the Capslock
key on PowerPC based Macintosh computers.

Without CapsOff installed there can be annoying problems when the capslock
key is hit by accident. You might type a whole stream of characters in
capital letters. Or your password keeps getting refused because you are
typing in upper case instead of mixed case.

With CapsOff installed hitting the CapsLock key will no longer be a
problem. You can configure it to play a simple beep when the key is hit and
then block the normal action of the CapsLock so that you still get
lowercase letters instead of CAPITALS. At anytime you can enable and
disable CapsOff by using a hotkey combination of your choosing. In addition
you can have CapsOff show an icon in the menubar when the CapsLock key is
down. This acts as a reminder and is especially helpfull if you don't have
a capslock light on your keyboard.

Enjoy!

Subject: [*] DiskSurveyor 1.4.1

DiskSurveyor is a utility designed to provide relief to frustrated
computer users with cluttered hard drives. It doesn't promise to make
your hard drive any bigger, but it does show you, *GRAPHICALLY*, what's
using up all that space. Click on a folder and zoom in for a closer
look. Or zoom back out. And with the press of a key, you open the
actual folder and can drag the "offending" files to the Trash or your
backup volume. Create DiskSummary files to take "snapshots" of your
hard drive or to catalog CDROMs and other removables. No longer will
you have to waste valuable time navigating through folder after folder
trying to figure out which files need to be archived or trashed to free
up precious disk space.

This update fixes a problem with how volume information was being
interpreted on some older systems (Mac OS 8.0 and earlier) and a few
other minor bugs.

And, for those that may have missed the last update, DiskSurveyor now
supports large disks (up to 2 Terabytes) and MacOS Extended disk format
(HFS Plus).

DiskSurveyor requires System 7 or greater and at least 256 colors (or
shades of gray) are recommended. (For those older Macs, Color QuickDraw
is required.) Shareware $10 (US)

Because I can't find any font viewer that is easy to use, quick, optimized
for on screen use, and MacOS 8.5 compatible. Moreover, FontBuddy supports
different keyboard layout (US, France, UK, Germany,=8A); if yours is missing=
,
ask me.

How much does it cost?
----------------------

=46ontBuddy is distributed as Shareware. You can try it for one month. If yo=
u
want to continue to use it, you should pay the shareware fee : a License
for a single user costs $10, a Site License costs $50, a WorldWide License
costs $100.

System Requirements
-------------------

=46ontBuddy should run on any Power Macintosh under MacOS 7.5 or greater. If
you need a 68 K version, ask me.

Subject: [*] GestLab 1.0b2 - The ultimate Gestalt Manager tool

GestLab is the Gestalt.Appl successor, a tool that allows you to check all
Gestalt selectors posted by Mac OS or by any other piece of software. It is
also a database including information about your system environment. You
see not only some technical infos but also understandable interpretation of
most codes (in English).

There are too many new features in GestLab to be listed here (a mini doc is
included). You have to know that GestLab user interface needs at least
Appearance Manager 1.0.1 (version found in Mac OS 8.1 and next). You can
install the Appearance extensions in Mac OS 7.1 and next (these extensions
are available at www.apple.com). Without Appearance Manager, you will only
allowed to save your configuration, not to examine it.

So, if your machine has at least Mac OS 8.1, use GestLab. With older
systems, continue to use Gestalt.Appl.

GestLab main goal is to maintain the more exhaustive Gestalt selector
database. When using it, if your configuration is displaying info not yet
in the database (what it is very easy to realize, this info is displayed in
red), don't hesitate to send it to me: I'll analyse it and update the
database for the next release. Your collaboration is essential in this
domain.

As Rene G. A. Ros said in his Gestalt Selectors List, GestLab is
the new 'official' Gestalt hunters tool! This 1.0b2 version corrects some
nasty bugs. You should replace b1 by b2 if you do use GestLab.

l'examiner.

Donc, si vous avez Mac OS 8.1, utilisez GestLab. Avec des systemes plus
anciens, continuez a utiliser Gestalt.Appl.

suivante. Votre collaboration est essentielle dans ce domaine.

Comme l'a dit Rene G. A. Ros dans sa Gestalt Selectors List, GestLab est le
nouvel outil de reference des chasseurs Gestalt. Cette version 1.0b2
corrige quelques mechantes bogues. Vous devez remplacer la b1 par la b2 si
vous utilisez GestLab.

internet chatting.

 * Service Scan:
This feature lets you scan for various open ports on a server or

These files are a suite of dictionaries of Jacek Iwanski's Verbs & Nouns
interactive language learning software. They consist of four inflection
dictionaries-Japanese Verbs, Japanese Adjectives, Japanese Adjectives (na),
and Japanese Nouns.

I created these dictionaries to suit my own needs. This means that you will
probably already need to read kanji to use them effectively. If you do not
read kanji already, I would suggest that you create kana-based versions of
these files. I don't have time to do this, but I will send you the text
files if you are interested. Too many beginning students of Japanese (and
Chinese) pay too much attention to learning kanji and not enough time on
grammar. Believe it or not, kanji is relatively easy to learn (with time),
but very few people ever truly master Japanese or Chinese grammar at
near-native levels of fluency.

You will need the Japanese Language Kit and "Verbs & Nouns" to use these
dictionaries. "Verbs & Nouns" you can download from the same location as

About:

MACcess 1.2 is a remote access system for the Macintosh platform. It
consists of a server that is run on a host computer and a client program
that is used to connect to the host. Also included in the MACcess
package is a utility to edit the server settings.

MACcess has a variety of uses and features. It is intended to be used
as a method for the owner of a computer to allow people to access
certain areas of their hard drive. This is basically Macintosh file
sharing over a TCP/IP connection. Another intended use is for the owner
of a computer to be able to get back into their computer from a remote
location to do routine maintenance and to get files needed at the time.

MACcess has many useful features that can aid in its intended use. It
can browse the directory structure of a remote computer, delete, launch,
and rename files, and download any file type of any size. Files are
converted and saved in a special format that allows for the quick
transfer of Macintosh resource structures. The MACcess client has the
ability to both create and transform these special files.

MACcess runs on both PPC and 68k machines.

Important:
If you have been using version 1.0 of MACcess, PLEASE use this
version. This version fixes some serious security holes in 1.0.

This program CAN be included on CD-ROMs if I am contacted first.

Subject: [*] MailFetch 2.0.1

MailFetch is a utility for America Online users. It performs several
functions, and *all* AOL users should find it to be a significant convenienc=
e,
time-saver and frustration-reducer. It will be particularly useful to those
who handle a lot of e=96mail correspondence using AOL.

With MailFetch you can:
* With a single click, run an "Auto AOL" session (sending and receiving e-
mail) and be notified if you have new mail, without bringing AOL to the fron=
t.
* With a single click, have AOL brought to the front and have your "Offline
Mail" window opened.
* Precisely schedule background Auto AOL sessions with a variety of options.
* Log on to AOL version 2.x, 3.x or 4.x while AOL is running in the backgrou=
nd
(not normally possible with AOL 2 or 3).
* Have AOL 2.x or 3.x continue to redial indefinitely until it connects.
* Have an Auto AOL session run whenever you start up your Mac.
* More!

MailFetch performs these feats primarily by automating various America Onlin=
e
functions, so that a single click in MailFetch triggers a series of actions =
in
AOL, without even making AOL your front application.

Here's how I use MailFetch:
Whenever I feel that I'd like to check my AOL e-mail, I simply switch to
MailFetch and click the "OK" button. Then I go back to whatever I was doing.
Total time of the interruption caused by this "I think I'll check my e-mail"
decision: about 1 second. Over the next few minutes AOL works in the
background, completing its dial-up and connection process, sending my outgoi=
ng
mail and downloading any incoming mail. If I have new messages, MailFetch pu=
ts
up a small floating window that reads "You have new mail on AOL". By clickin=
g
inside this window, I am taken to AOL's "Off-line Mail" window, where my new
messages are listed.

Other users might prefer to use MailFetch's scheduling options. In that case=
,
you can have an Auto AOL session run at regular intervals as frequently as
every half hour (at times you precisely determine). The "You have new mail"
window will appear if new mail is downloaded. Otherwise, you don't even have
to think about AOL, or switch it to the front, or navigate its menus and
windows.

A POWERFUL UNIVERSAL DRIVER FOR ALL USB MICE AND JOYSTICKS

The USB Overdrive is a universal USB driver that handles all USB
mice, trackballs, joysticks and gamepads from any manufacturer
and lets you configure them either globally or on an
application-specific basis. It reads all kinds of wheels,
buttons, switches and controls and supports scrolling, keyboard
emulation, launching and complex macros as well as all the usual
stuff like clicking, control-clicking and so forth. The USB
Overdrive can easily handle several USB devices at once- I have
two mice, one trackball, two joysticks and one gamepad connected
to the same iMac, and each of them comes from a different
manufacturer.

Because each control in each device can be fully configured, the
USB Overdrive lets you use any joystick or gamepad with any
game, including the ones that don't support Apple's
InputSprockets. You can map your joystick movements and buttons
to the keyboard and mouse to make the game believe you're
playing on the keyboard, and you can do this mapping separately
for each game so that it's immediately available as soon as the
game is launched.

For games that already use InputSprockets, the USB Overdrive
provides all the needed hooks to support the device-specific
configuration panels provided by the manufacturer.

The mouse settings allow you to speed up your daily tasks by
assigning useful actions to all the extra buttons and wheels in
your USB mouse. You'll typically want to assign a control-click

Subject: [*] Verbs & Nouns 2.3.4 - foreign language learning

Here is the new version of 'Verbs & Nouns' - 2.3.4

The new version includes several interface improvements.

'Verbs & Nouns' is an application for practising inflection, translation
and pronunciation at the level of single words. Features include the
opportunity to do various inflection exercises, and translation exercises in
both directions; to record and play sound for single words; and to do
exercises based on sound or pictures.

The program keeps a record of exercises, and identifies the words that
the student has difficulty with. Along with the program, you need a
module for the target language concerned. The program can also be used
as an authoring tool to write your own modules of inflected words for
any language. A built-in 'inflection-generator' simplifies the addition
of these words. A 'Find' feature allows the modules to be used as
bilingual dictionaries.

Ready-made modules are already available for certain languages. You can
visit my home-page to get more information:

Tracks versions of all applications, control panels, extensions, etc.

Text Blurb:

Version Finder is a Mac OS Application that keeps track of the current
version numbers of all your Applications, Extensions, Control Panels,
Drivers, etc. on your hard disk. You can quickly determine which version
of a program you have by consulting Version Finder. If you have internet
access and a web browser, you can use Version Finder to help search
various internet sites for possible updates to your files. If you have
MacOS 8.5 or later, Version Finder can use Sherlock to help find items on
the internet.

Version Finder has many other useful features such as the ability to
display the full pathname of items in its list, open Finder "Get Info"
windows for any of the items in its list, open the folder containing an
item in the list, and opening (launching) any item in the list. You can
also restrict the display to show only duplicate items, which can aid in
cleaning up duplicates on your disks.
