Subject:

I have encountered a strange "feature" with Apple's Remote Access and it is
causing me some problems.

I have a small ethernet network set up at home with 2 older powermacs
running system 8.1, an Imac running 8.6, and a HP printer connected to the
network via a ethernet-to-localtalk hardware bridge.

Everything works fine on all three computers until I connect to my
employer's (a.k.a. Rice Univesity, a.k.a. my inter provider)dial-up pool,
but once I connect, all university's Appletalk zones show up in the chooser
window on the Imac, and my local printer driver becomes
inaccessible, so I can't print. I can still print from the other two
computers and I can still share files between all three computers. When I
disconnect from the internet the driver becomes available again and I can
print.

Is there any way to:

A. Prevent Remote Access from using Appletalk while talking to Rice via the
modem? I have tried changing things in the TCP/IP, Appletalk, and Remote
Access Control panels, but nothing has worked so far.

or

B. Configure dial-up script, so the appletalk zones won't be accessible
through the dail-up?

or

C. Setting up a local zone without spending a lot of money on equipment and
software. This is just a shot in the dark as I know nothing about it.

Any other suggestions for solutions and work-arounds will be appreciated.

Subject: [*] Shrink Wrap 3.5 Trialware

Requirements: System 7.1.1 or later (See notes below)
License: Trialware, 30-day
Description: ShrinkWrap creates and mounts exact duplicates of disk
images on the desktop for easy online distribution. With a simple drag
and drop, you can turn a disk or files into an electronically
transmittable image file and then return it to an exact copy of the
original source disk.

Whats new:

   * Easily create read/write/mount support for Apple's segmented images
without using scripting software. ShrinkWrap automatically creates
segmented images based on the media that is being used.

   * Support for HFS+ - For HFS+ users, creating a back-up image has
never been easier or more reliable.

   * Option to not copy unused blocks of a volume - This benefits users
by assuring that only information they choose to include is copied,
and saving media and hard drive space when the image is compressed.

   * Supports Navigation Services - Open/Save dialogs are now movable,
support multiple selections, and allow easy access to recent,
favorite and network folders and servers- even those not already
     mounted in the Finder.

   * Interface Improvements - ShrinkWrap is Appearance Manager savvy
and has an updated Preferences window (similar to DropStuff and
Expander). This unites the ShrinkWrap interface with the System
software and makes ShrinkWrap more familiar to new users.

Requirements:
ShrinkWrap supports Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers running
Mac OS 7.1.1 and higher. It contains both 68K and PowerPC native code,
is AppleEvent aware, 32-bit clean, AV, '040 cache and virtual memory
compatible. Although a Macintosh SE or better is required for full
functionality, the Mac Plus can still use ShrinkWrap to mount, convert
and verify disk image files. The Component Manager, available with
QuickTime 1.5 or System 7.1 or later, is required to handle compressed
or encrypted disk images.

Requirements: Spring Cleaning 3.0
License: n/a
Description: New update available as of March 24, 1999

There is a new update available for users of Spring Cleaning 3.0.
Spring Cleaning version 3.0.1 updates:

1.	A bug that affects both 68K and PowerMacs that would result in Out
of Memory messages or causing intermittent quits has been fixed.
2.	A bug that incorrectly displays volume sizes over 4 Gigs has been
    updated as well.
3.	With Document Finder some invisible files are not found and do not
show up in the Search Results window, this has been corrected in
    update 3.0.1.
4.	The new StuffIt 5.1 engine is included in the 3.0.1 update, this
will handle the issue of having to install separate Text Encoding
Converters. With the 3.0.1 update users will not need to install
the Text Encoding Converters. If Spring Cleaning 3.0 users are
already using the StuffIt 5.1 engine (found in DropStuff 5.1 and
the StuffIt Engine SDK) then they don't need to worry about this
    issue.

Once downloaded, double-click the update to run it. You will
be presented with important installation instructions - be sure to
read them.

To run the installer:

1.	Restart your computer with extensions off/disabled.
2.	Locate the file Spring Cleaning 3.0.1 Updater
3.	Run the installer.*
4.	Restart again with your extensions enabled.

* If the updater does not find a copy of SpringCleaning then you may
need to rebuild your Desktop by restarting your computer while holding
down the [option] + [Comand] keys until the dialog, "Are you sure you
want to rebuild the Desktop on <Drive name>?"

NOTE: If you have a version of Spring Cleaning that is earlier than 3.0
(i.e. Spring Cleaning 2.0), this update will be of no use to you. (To

Subject: [*] Stuffit Lite 3.6

Requirements: System 6.0.4 or higher (7.1.1 or higher for drag-n-drop ability)
License: Shareware, 15-day
Description: About StuffIt Lite

*Fast Stuffing and UnStuffing
StuffIt Lite 3.6 is accelerated for Power Macintosh. Expansion of files on many
platforms is accelerated. StuffIt Lite compresses files an average of 60%,
creating a document called an archive. Archives save disk space, speed modem
and network file transfers, and make backups easier. StuffIt is the international
standard of file compression and archiving on all major online services
(including America Online and CompuServe) and thousands of bulletin board systems.

*Drag and Drop Support
StuffIt Lite 3.6 has drag and drop support making compression and expansion easy
to perform. To expand a file in a StuffIt archive, the user simply drags the
file onto the desktop. A file can be Stuffed by dragging it onto an archive or
into an open archive window. (This drag and drop functionality requires System
7.1.1 or higher.)

*AppleScript Support
A suite of Apple events for registered copies of StuffIt Lite allow the program
to be automated using Apple's scripting technology. StuffIt Lite is also fully
recordable; just like a tape recorder, a user can perform a series of actions
and the script will be automatically written.

*Other Information
StuffIt Lite 3.6 features other capabilities found in previous versions, including
the ability to password protect archives, to create self-extracting archives and
to segment archives for fitting large files across multiple floppy disks. StuffIt
Lite 3.6 comes complete with an online guide.

Aladdin is offering StuffIt Lite 3.6 free to registered users of StuffIt Lite 3.5.
Otherwise, StuffIt Lite 3.6 upgrades cost $15 for all other previous versions.

StuffIt Lite is copyrighted shareware. After using StuffIt Lite for 15 days,
users are honor-bound to send Aladdin a $30 registration fee. By registering
StuffIt Lite, the user receives added benefits including AppleScriptability,
free technical support and updates, enhanced features, and special pricing
on other Aladdin products.

Subject: [*] Touch-3D Version 2.1.2 - Now Create Real 3D Models!

New Touch-3D Version 2.1 Released - Now Create Real 3D Models!
It includes several new unfold layout functions and much
improved import/export filters. This program
is only available on the Mac.

Introduction

Designers have always used models to visualize their
ideas. In the past models required craftsmanship and a lot
of time consuming manual work. Then along came computers
with completely new and exciting sets of applications for
computer graphics, computer aided design, 3D modeling and
rendering. These programs have great power for creating
photo realistic images, having color, surface structure,
shadows, and so on but...

The problem is that these images remain in the computer and
even when they simulate 3D are still only in the 2D world.
Designers prefer physical models that they can see, feel
and touch. Like a picture is worth a thousand words, one
model is like a thousand pictures and can give a much more
concrete cognition of an object.

This is what Touch-3D is all about. A three dimensional
object is first designed on screen and can be unfolded
automatically to maximize the use of any building
material. Boats, tents, buildings and any 3D object you
can imagine is first designed on screen and using the
smart unfolding algorithms in the program, unfolded and
then printed out. Once printed and cut along the edges,
the model can then be folded back together to create the
actual physical 3D object. This is a lot quicker, easier
and less expensive then carving a wooden model or moulding
from plastic or clay and allows for quick changes and
updates.

Touch-3D is easy to use and comes with a powerful range of
drawing and modeling tools, allowing you to create
sophisticated 3D models. Experienced Mac users will feel
at home right away with the interface and all the tools.
Touch-3D compliments other 3D, photo and illustration
programs and adds a new dimension to their abilities.

Subject: LaserJet vs. LaserWriter

Howdy y'all,

I had an interesting problem today...and now that I've had a while to think
about it, it's not the first time I've seen this. Perhaps my experience
will help someone else.

We moved some printers around today. Our AppleTalk naming convention is
simply the printer's location (room number). I used Apple Printer Utility
to rename an HP LaserJet 4M to (oops) exactly the same name as a LaserWriter
16/600 which had also been moved, but hadn't yet been renamed. Presto: the
Apple printer disappeared from the AppleTalk network completely, even after
I renamed the LaserJet to something else.

I tried shutting the LaserJet off, and restarting the LaserWriter. No good.
And of course, since it was missing from AppleTalk, I couldn't rename the
LaserWriter; Printer Utility couldn't see it. The Windoze 95 LaserWriter
utility *was* able to see it. So it was still on the network, just not via
AppleTalk. And I'm pretty sure there's no hardware way to reset the
AppleTalk name on a LaserWriter 16/600, short of opening the foolish thing
up and pulling out anything that looks like a battery or a capacitor.

Eventually I removed the LaserWriter from the network and connected it
directly to just one Mac; then it showed up. I was able to rename it to a
unique name, and when I put it back on the LAN it worked fine.

Now, when two HP printers have the same name, there is some weirdness; one
will be called "HP LaserJet 4M" and the next one will show up as "HP
LaserJet 4M1" or something like that. But at least through trial and error
you can figure out which is which and rename them.

But with an Apple printer and an HP printer, it seems as if the Apple
printer just loses the fight and sulks. Anyone want to add to this, perhaps
shed some light on what is really going on, or a better way to get the
LaserWriter out of its fugue state?

Bottom line is "don't be a bonehead like me."

Thanks bunches,
Dave

Subject: Premire 5.1 Export

I am trying to help someone with a G4. They are trying to export a movie
from Adobe Premire 5.1 to a digital camera using firewire. It is not
working at all. I am going to look at drivers, etc. tomorrow, and the
above is the only information I currently have. The biggest problem is
that this needs to be done by Nov 18 (tomorrow) at 3:00 CST.

Anyone have any sugestions?? Other than not waiting to the last minute to
ask for help?!?!? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Subject: Setting default print page size under OS8.6

Since I upgraded to 8.6 I have noticed that Page Setup in most of my
applications defaults to 'A4 Small' or (occasionally) to 'US Letter'
whereas I use only normal A4 paper. Is there a way to reset the default so
that I do not have to adjust for every new document I create. To the best
of my memory this was not an issue under System 7.x or earlier - I just set
the page size once and that was it. Advice please?
TIA -
