Subject: (C) if you have been holding back your replies

Dear Digest readers,
If you know the answer to a problem, please don't hold back your
replies. There seems to be a prevailing assumption that given
enough time someone will reply to a question answered here. And so
people don't reply because they worry about spamming the user with
repetitive replies. What ends up happening is the groupthink of the
existence of other replies means nobody replies! Actually accurate
replies, no matter how many of them are quite valuable. Just so
long as they aren't flames, I know I certainly will accept them. I
got one reply from a user to my question which started out:

>No doubt you've already been told this by now, but ...

Well I hadn't. Even if you think you know the answer and just want
to clarify what my question means to give me an appropriate reply,
that's fine. There was a time this place was so helpful, I got
thirty replies to a single question! That appears to be past us now.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Subject: (Q) Apple Data Detectors work with recent OS's?

I've seen a lot of good comments about Apple Data Detectors. I've
also seen some comments that the ADD software does not work with
"modern" OS's. Does anyone have any experience that indicates that
the Apple Data Detectors do work with OS 8.6 and OS 9.0?

Thanks!

Subject: [*] Stuffit Lite 3.6

Requirements: System 6.0.4 or higher (7.1.1 or higher for drag-n-drop ability)
License: Shareware, 15-day
Description: About StuffIt Lite

*Fast Stuffing and UnStuffing
StuffIt Lite 3.6 is accelerated for Power Macintosh. Expansion of files on many
platforms is accelerated. StuffIt Lite compresses files an average of 60%,
creating a document called an archive. Archives save disk space, speed modem
and network file transfers, and make backups easier. StuffIt is the international
standard of file compression and archiving on all major online services
(including America Online and CompuServe) and thousands of bulletin board systems.

*Drag and Drop Support
StuffIt Lite 3.6 has drag and drop support making compression and expansion easy
to perform. To expand a file in a StuffIt archive, the user simply drags the
file onto the desktop. A file can be Stuffed by dragging it onto an archive or
into an open archive window. (This drag and drop functionality requires System
7.1.1 or higher.)

*AppleScript Support
A suite of Apple events for registered copies of StuffIt Lite allow the program
to be automated using Apple's scripting technology. StuffIt Lite is also fully
recordable; just like a tape recorder, a user can perform a series of actions
and the script will be automatically written.

*Other Information
StuffIt Lite 3.6 features other capabilities found in previous versions, including
the ability to password protect archives, to create self-extracting archives and
to segment archives for fitting large files across multiple floppy disks. StuffIt
Lite 3.6 comes complete with an online guide.

Aladdin is offering StuffIt Lite 3.6 free to registered users of StuffIt Lite 3.5.
Otherwise, StuffIt Lite 3.6 upgrades cost $15 for all other previous versions.

StuffIt Lite is copyrighted shareware. After using StuffIt Lite for 15 days,
users are honor-bound to send Aladdin a $30 registration fee. By registering
StuffIt Lite, the user receives added benefits including AppleScriptability,
free technical support and updates, enhanced features, and special pricing
on other Aladdin products.

Subject: IDE Hard Drives in beige G3[summary]

QUESTION:
I would like to add a second HD to my G3/233 beige desktop and the material
around is confusing. I appear to have a 'Rev B' machine which is capable
of supporting more than one IDE HD.There is no Zipdrive in the machine.

SUMMARY:
1.0	Rev B beige DT G3 have connectors allowing one extra IDE HD to be
installed in the bay above the Zip bay IF there is no Zip installed.
2.0	The CDROM is an ATAPI device jumpered as 'Master' residing on the same
        bus as the extra HD.
3.0	A second IDE HD jumpered as 'Slave' will function in the machine
with no
apparent problems even as a boot disk.

INFORMATION:
My G3 has a display card in PCI slot $F1 designated as an
ATY,mach64_3DUPro. (Apparently this indicates a 'Rev B' machine but this
designation doesn't appear on the ATI list of chips.) The '**Pro'
designates a Rev B machine.

The machine has an IDE cable connected to the CDROM (jumpered as 'Master'
-> ID=0) and connected to a spare 40 pin IDE socket. Two Spare power
sockets (4-pin) are also available in similar daisy-chain fashion.

The Zip bay and the bay above have rails ready to accept 'sleds' (a sled is
screwed to an HD and presumably to an IDE Zip for mounting purposes, it
slides into rails and locks in place)

ACTION:
I purchased a 13.7GB Western Digital Expert AT66 EIDE drive and obtained an
old sled from a local Apple dealer.
The 'Expert' I jumpered for 'Slave' according to its label, screwed on the
sled with the plastic pull-up flap towards the connectors end, connected
the IDE connector and power cable connector and booted from the existing
4GB WD Caviar. OS 8.6 is installed, 96MB RAM. The 'Expert' didn't mount.
Using Drive Set Up 1.7.3 the 'Expert' showed up as 'Untitled'. Low level
format selection was dimmed so I selected 'Initialize' which took only 5
secs or so and 'Untitled' HD popped up on the desktop on bus AT1, ID=1
(i.e. a 'Slave'.) It had 'lost' some 0.9GB capacity since it purported to
be a 13.6GB 'formatted' and desktopped as a '12.7GB'.
I copied the contents from the Caviar and froze some 1.6GB into the copy so
I booted from my Utilities CD and re-copied, no problem.
After sorting out some 'lost' aliases and stuffing the contents of the
Caviar I ran various utilities, defragmented and selected the 'Expert' as
the boot disc in Control Panel 'Startup Disk'. It booted (seeming much
faster than the Caviar and MUCH less noisy!)

Thanks to all who offered advice -- I apologise for not listing them but
somehow I lost some mailboxes in my reconfiguration.

*Automatic connect AND disconnect(I pay phone bills, it must disconnect when

*Will recieve faxes via fax/modem software when disconnected
*Has 2 sockets for real telephones
*will connect to my 10 Base-T hub, does not need a hub of its own

Also I have questions. Is it right I need two phone lines to run 128k ISDN?
If so can I plug analouge phones into one line when I am not using it for

Should I get a third phone line so I can use 2 for ISDN and one for

Can I save money if I buy a 64k router?

Subject: Outlook Express Attachements

I have a problem with Outlook Express 4.5 and one of its email attachements

I get daily attachements from infobeat.com for my investment portfolio. The
email message comes in regular text along with a attachement in text for
Quicken import format. This worked great with Claris Emailer which I have
been using for years. For some unexplained reason and without warning, it
popped up a dialog box saying my software has expired, please contact Claris
for an update. This really freeked me since I own the software and Claris
is no more as well as Emailer. Darn thing would not let me into the program
or get my contacts and stored email from the files. I have tried
everything.

Anyway, I was forced to Outlook Express against my will. Working okay
besides my security concerns except for the infobeat email attachement. It
is unreadable in a binary format. I have tried everything. Saving
attachements or draging to the desktop will not decode it. I have tried
unstuff it and it will not help. I have looked at the prefences and I
cannot find a decode as... checkbox. All other attachements work fine.
When I look at the complete source, the attachement is in ASCII as it
should. I have been saving about a months worth of data and I would like to
update my Quicken data files.

Got any ideas? Outlook Express help and MS Network was too large to find
anything.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
