Subject: [*] Setting Sun 1.4

I'm pleased to announce a new release of Setting Sun, our high-end
screen saver featuring many 3D modules.

Setting Sun requires Mac OS 8.1 or later, with QuickDraw 3D and
OpenGL recommended. It is available from:

Version 1.4 includes six exciting new modules, which are:

  - Flag (real-time cloth simulation)
  - Slide Show (hypnotic slide show)
  - Plasma (warping flowing colours
  - Image Cube (bouncing image display)
  - RotoZoom (classic demo effect)
  - Atlantis (deep sea dive)

Other changes include:

  - Example photos for image based faders
  - Faders can now be run on any monitor
  - Simplified registration process
  - Several minor bug fixes

Subject: [*] WordPerfect Updater for OS 8 and 9

This updates the latest version of WordPerfect Mac for compatibility with
OS versions 8 and 9:

- slows scrolling speed (also on fast machines running 7.5x or 7.6x)
- fixes grayed out Styles, Window and Movie menus
- improves display
- fixes outlining

Since any application compatible with OS 9.0.4 should run in classic mode
on OS X and later, WordPerfect should now be compatible with all future OS
versions.

Free.

I use a freeware program called "Autograph," by David Kabal. This sets
up a random signature based on a template; the first line of mine, for
example, stays constant while the quote changes.
It lists <http://macs.ee.mcgill.ca/~davidk/> as its home page, but that
seems to be dead. Fortunately there's an archive at
<http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive/Archive/comm/inet/mail/edr/eudora-autograph-20.hqx>.
This program changes the text file you set up as the template to its own
document type. (You can still edit it by dragging it on SimpleText or
BBEdit.) It selects a random quote from a specified file and inserts it
into the proper point; it then saves the file in Eudora's Signature folder
under the name that Eudora is expecting.
Therefore, it won't set a random quote every time you send a letter.
However, if you have a timing utility that can run programs at certain
times of the day (OneClick can do this, as can the Sophisticated Circuits
"PowerKey Scheduler" or "iDo" programs; there are also others), you can set
it up so that it changes the .sig at midnight every day. Or, you can just
place the file in your Startup Items folder and get a random signature when
you restart your computer.

Subject: IDE hard disk formatting

I have used Drive Setup that comes with the MacOS System CD to format and
partition both Western Digital and Maxstor drives that didn't display
support for Mac on the packaging. I have been using the 20 GB drives for
over a year with no problems. The screw holes for mounting line up perfectly
and they use the same IDE and power connectors. Just be sure you position
the jumpers properly to designate the drive as either slave or master
depending on your configuration. Go to the following Apple Technical
Information Library (TIL) articles to read about this topic:

For a brief period Apple configured their own drive formatting
utility to see and work on drives that did not have Apple OEM ROMs,
but I believe that they recently "unconfigured" Drive Setup so that
it does not do this anymore.

If this is the case, there is an easy ResEdit hack that will remove
the block so you can do it anyway. Of course you can purchase some
other drive utility software (I don't know of any freeware), but the
RE hack is probably the easiest.

I'll look around for the information and post it to you, though I
expect somebody else on the InfoMac list will probably post it before
I find it.

FYI, I just bought a 20 GB Western Digital EIDE hard drive for my
beige G3/233, and the latest version of Drive Setup worked just fine.
I was even able to transfer the contents of the old hard drive with
Retrospect Express by temporarily connecting the new drive to the CD
ROM drive cable.

I would like to read Polish texts (ie fonts displayed properly) using Internet
Explorer 5.0 & Outlook Express 4.5. My attempts to set the browsers have been
that far unsuccessful. What do I need and how to set up the browsers to read
Central European texts.
I am using Mac G3 with OS 8.5.1. I would appreciate help to set up my browsers.

Subject: Personal LaserWriter NTR

I just received a Personal LaserWriter NTR about which I know very
little.

Among my questions:
    1. Can it be used with a straight serial connection, or do you have
to use Localtalk?
    2. What printer driver do you use? Will the older LaserWriter driver
work, or do you have to use a specialized driver?
    3. Do you have to have any special control panels or extensions
loaded to work with it?

I was planning on using it on a Localtalk network, but thought I might
use it straight also.
My computers include a Mac Plus, SE, SE/30, LC, Performa 550, Quadra
650, and Duo 2300.
They are all on an Appletalk network.

Thanks in advance for any help available.

I have new iMac-DV-se (OS 9.0.4).

On my old Mac 6205, the FileFinder displays the PATH to any file I select
(highlight).

In Sherlock2, it finds files, but does NOT display paths to selected files.

Why not?

A network error really DID occur--one of your selected sources isn't
working correctly. You can determine which one (if you really care) by
selecting them one at a time and then clicking the magnifying glass.

> So three questions: (1) Can one reinstall an application like

Risky. It will install what you dragged 'n' dropped, but maybe you
didn't get every component needed for that application.

>(2) If not, how does one
>install _just_ one application from the CD?

In my experience, installers generally install more than just what you
select for a custom install. However, your technique is correct.

>and (3) Has anyone who

Yes, by updating or removing the offending source item.

Hope this helps. Cheers,

Subject: wich Programm triggers my dial-in account

Hi,

how can i figure out wich programm/tool/control panel triggers my dial-in
connenction to the internet? When i change my settings in tcp/ip from
ethernet to ppp and close the control panel, my mac will immediately start a
remote connection. I have enabled the "load only when needed" checkbox in
tcp/ip-options.

Is there a tool, wich can show me, what program is the one, who started the
connection?

Kind Regards,
