InfoMac Folk:
Has anyone successfully set up the iTools? I've tried several times on a
couple different systems and I can get mail at my mac.com address but the
desktop iDisk access remains elusive. Every time I try to log in the iTools
site claims that I've got to reinstall the software because I've got to

There's no help or contact information in the intro mail message they send

Subject: [*] BetterPlayer

BetterPlayer 1.0 was FTP to infomac.org as betterplayer.hqx, below is the
press release that went with the file.

contact: Matthew Beedle @ MattBeedle@aol.com
President of Foxchange Shareware @ http://www.foxchange.com

Foxchange Shareware announces
BetterPlayer 1.0, the alternate QuickTime Player

February 1, 2000, Battle Mountain, NV - Foxchange Shareware announces the
release of BetterPlayer 1.0.

BetterPlayer is a freeware open source utility that plays QuickTime movies
without the clunky UN-Mac like interface that was introduced into QuickTime
Player and Sherlock 2.

BetterPlayer plays QuickTime movies that are either dropped onto the
application or opened within. Once a QT movie has been opened, users can
change the file type and creator so that the file will open with BetterPlayer
by default. Other useful options that have been added are automatically play
and loop options that can be applied to every file individually. This is
especially cool for those that have a favorite MIDI file they like to listen
too, just double click and the file will start to open.

To make life easier, these settings can become default settings as well as
the option to automatically change the file type and creator to that of
BetterPlayer. Just as important as applying these settings, they can also be
removed restoring the file to it's natural state. Since the only thing that
BetterPlayer adds is a STR# to the resource fork, no data can be damaged by
the application.

Foxchange Shareware has released BetterPlayer as open source software so that
other programmers can extend the application's functionality. Several things
are planned for future releases, the ability to add a resource fork to a file
that doesn't have one so BetterPlayer can work with it, sizing options,
remembering window positions as well as basic editing features.

BetterPlayer is the foundation for another unnamed application that Foxchange
Shareware may be developing in the possible future.

Currently BetterPlayer 1.0 is available for download at
ftp://ftp.foxchange.com
The latest version of BetterPlayer can be found at http://www.foxchange.com

As well as the goal of producing high quality games for the Mac market,
Foxchange Shareware is also going to be introducing utilities into the Mac
market.

Subject: [*] BOOM 1.2b1

Dear Info-Mac moderators,

I'd like to submit for inclusion on your archives the following software:

BOOM 1.2b1 (beta release 1)

What is BOOM?
BOOM is an arcade game in the grand tradition, bringing the
playability and feel of the glorious 8-bit consoles on the
Macintosh. It can be described as "Bomberman meets Doom".
Actually, I took the basic Bomberman idea and dropped it in a
"Super-Deformed Doom" scenario (whatever this means).
As a space marine your mission is to penetrate 8 alien infested
areas, each one divided in 10 sub-zones, eliminate all enemies
using your bombs and finally kick the Big Alien Boss back to
where he came from.

System Requirements:
PowerPC processor;
5.5 MBytes free memory;
Mac OS 7.0.1 or later;
640x480 or larger monitor supporting 256 colors;
Sound Manager 3.0 or later.

Recommended Configuration
Mac OS 8.1 or later;
Sound Manager 3.2 or later;
InputSprocket 1.1 or later.

What's new in BOOM 1.2?
* Completely rewritten in C/C++.
* Recompiled with the latest updates of the Sprite Animation Toolkit
and the MADLibrary (music drivers).
* Highly improved all standard application interface elements.
* The Preferences dialog (formerly called Options) has been
completely redesigned using tab panels.
* The Preferences dialog is now directly accessible when in pause
(the relevant menu item has been moved to the Edit menu).
* The "Quick Settings" menu is now called "Options" and is located on
the menubar for easier access.
* Now the game automatically hides the Control Strip (if active) on
startup and shows it again on quit (and when switching to the Finder).
* Added an option for automatically setting the monitor resolution to
640 x 480 on startup.
* Added support for external input devices like joysticks and game
pads (requires InputSprocket 1.1 or later installed).
* Added transparency effects to visually enhance some animation details.
* Introduced a frame-skipping mechanism to speed-up animation on
slower machines.

LSQL 1.1.1 is a new version of LSQL on your sites.

LSQL is a replacement of isql from Sybase. System 8.5 or higher and
PowerPC are required. LSQL is threaded, and a long query won't block
other queries or other running softwares. It works on MacOS 8.6,
which was the primary reason to develop the software, since isql
can run due to the font bug on MacOS 8.6.

LSQL is distributed as freeware for non-commercial use. For commercial
use, please contact me at: li_hao_@hotmail.com.

For lateste version, mount the public folder on my iDisk "li_hao_"

Subject: [*] MacTicker 1.6.2 Full Installer

MacTicker is a simple Internet application that lets you view
the free stock market information provided online by financial websites
around the world. You can watch any number of your stocks roll by on the
ticker, or call up a detailed report for each of your favorites.

MacTicker updates this information once a minute right on your desktop.
You can configure it to alert you to stocks that are doing particularly
well, or warn you to sell that stinker.

MacTicker gives you all the charms of the stock market, without the traders.

This version of MacTicker will operate in demo mode for 30 minutes, and
will unlock to the full unlimited application once a registration number
is entered.

To run MacTicker you need the following things:

- A PowerPC-based Macintosh computer.

- System 7.5 or better.

- Open Transport. Open Transport has been part of the Mac OS for a few years
now, but in its early days it was presented as an optional way of connecting
to the Internet. If you are running System 7.5, make sure you're running the
final version for that system, Open Transport 1.1.2. If you do not have this
version on your original installation disks, you can download it from
<http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n10739>. More recent versions
of the Mac OS include Open Transport as the standard way of connecting to
the Internet. If you are running System 8 or later, you should already be
running Open Transport.

- 4 MB of application RAM.

- Internet Config (or the Internet control panel under Mac OS 8.5 and later).
If you are not running Mac OS 8.5, it's likely that you already have Internet
Config installed on your computer, since almost every Internet application
includes it as part of its installation. You can also download the latest
version from <ftp://ftp.stairways.com/stairways/internetconfig-20.sit.bin>.

- A connection to the Internet. MacTicker supports modem or direct
network connections.

Subject: [*] Navi iRae 1.7

Navi iRae is a control panel that provides menus, when you command-click
in a window's title region, that lets you navigate through the path of
the file, just like in the Finder. "Navi iRae" just looks for an opened
file with the same name as the window's one.

If it finds several opened files with the same name, it displays a menu
with every file match in submenus.

Some applications, when opening a file, copy its content in a temporary
file, and then close it (eg. Photoshop, Illustrator, Canvas,
GraphicConverter·). In version 1.1.x it made them impossible to see for
Navi iRae. But not anymore ! Now Navi iRae now looks for recently opened
files to find them. Beware ! There's not complete guarantee this is the
real file.

Beware, for best results you'll need an utility that keeps track of
recently opened files. You have several choices supported by Navi iRae :
Apple Menu Options : no special setting required
             OtherMenu :no special setting required
BeHierarchic 4.0 : be sure to check the option "Apple Menu
Option Compatible"

Minimum requirements :
Mac OS 8.5 and PPC

Price : free !

New to this version (1.7)
Navi iRae is now multi-users saavy.
Added support for Corel PhotoPaint.
Corrected problems with Jade and FrameMaker.

hide them all. You can also exclude some applications from being quitted
or hidden by these commands, like for example SpeedDoubler that you
don't want to quit, or QuickTime player that you don't want to hide...

Wapp pro lets you also navigate through the windows of the front process
by keyboard shortcuts. You can exchange the 2 frontmost windows, send
the frontmost window to the back, or bring the last window to the front.
It also lets you cycle through the applications list.

Wapp pro enhances the Navigation Services dialogs. It brings the Click
There It Is concept to the Navigation Services open/save dialogs.
Clicking with some modifier keys in a Finder window will display its
content in the open/save dialog. If a Finder window is hidden you can
also use the menu Wapp pro adds when a Navigation Services open/save
dialog is front.

Minimum requirements :
Mac OS 8.5 and PPC

Price : $10

New to this version (2.5):
Wapp pro failed to load at startup if its preferences were corrupted or
too old (before version 1.5). Fixed.
Wapp pro sometimes failed to save the preferences. Fixed.
Wapp pro could loose your registration. Fixed. Maybe you'll have to
enter it again. Sorry.

Anyone experienced this before ?

Subject: [Q] PB 170 screen

I have a PowerBook 170 that is sufficiently souped-up that I don't want to
say goodbye. (Battery life with a monochrome display is phenomenal
because I can turn the backlight off. The screen has no filters for color
or grayscale, so I can see on and off pixels without a backlight. I added
an Envisio video-out card and an internal modem, and it has max RAM of 8
Meg. When the power goes out, as in last week's record-setting snow storm
in central NC, I am NOT out of luck. I don't use it for heavy-duty work,
but I can't beat it for battery life and dependability.) Last week I
opened it up to check on the video card since I was having an external
video problem. The answer turned out to be RTFM and use software, but I
looked at the hardware first. It was fine for several restarts after that
while I was testing monitors. It got too cold to startup at one point
last week, but then came up fine when it warmed up. What a trouper! And
then it did something funny, AFTER all those chances last week for which I
wouldn't blame it for having problems. The video is all screwy.
Basically the screen is divided into about 5 pixel columns. The top half
has every other column and fills in with gray checkerboard (one pixel on,
neighbors off), and the bottom half has the columns the top half didn't
show, and I can only barely access the top half and left half of my
screen; only one-quarter of my screen shows in this odd manner! Now, I've
seen weird video on my PowerBook 170 years ago when I first bought it and
it needed its floppy drive replaced, and it was my fault for not seating
the video connector tightly when putting it back together. So I thought I
had not been careful enough, and I opened the case and reseated the
connector. Well, I've checked my work 4 times, and nothing I do
(including setting it in the coziest warmest place in the house, since it
didn't like getting cold) fixes the video. Please, does anyone have any
ideas? I think I'll try contact cleaner, but really the contacts look
very clean.

Thanks for any tips!

Sounds strange advice to me; I ran 8.5 on a 7200/120 (601) with no
problems. It should be fine on a 7600. OS 8.0 _might_ be marginally
faster on an older Mac I suppose, but I doubt if there's much in it.
