After updating MRJ (Apple's Macintosh Runtime for Java) to 2.2.3, every Java
web page returned errors in IE. I had to point IE to the Java Libraries in
the Extensions Folder:
In IE open: Edit - Preferences
      Select: Web Browser
        Select: Java
          Under Class Path click: Add
Navigate to and select: Extensions/MRJ Libraries
              Click: OK
                Quit IE

IE should no longer return Java errors, but will not display some Java sites
that Netscape will correctly display (for example, my bank's web site). IE
uses MRJ; Netscape does not, but rather its own java runtime environment.
The MRJ is not fully compliant with the latest version of Java. Various web
sources indicate it will not be fixed until OS X.

BTW, this fix, of course, does not keep my Mac from crashing from time to
time when Entourage and IE are running at the same time; nor does keep MS
Office 2001 (all apps) from "freezing" every 10-30 minutes on my PB G3
(apple/clover + enter unfreezes).

Sure - I have recently succeeded in making a bootable CD which boots an
original iBook (Blueberry), a firewire iBook (Graphite) and a desktop Beige
G3.

I started by creating a partition on my hard disk which was around 650mb
(this was because I wanted to add other software and wanted to be aware of
the size limit). If you have good backups, re-formatting and partitioning is
a relatively painless procedure. You will have to boot from this partition,
later in the process, so it is an essential starting point.

I then restored my original data to it's new partition, did an easy install
of OS 9.0.4 to the new 'CD Burning' partition using the Software install
disk that came with the firewire iBook.

I then compared the system folder on the newly installed partition with the
system folder on the Software install disk. I labelled the components that
were the same, and also dragged across a couple of items that weren't
included with the installation (one of these was an extension called
Insomnia?). What it then comes down to is that any part of the system folder
that isn't labelled, ie wasn't part of the Software install disk, can safely
be deleted (preferably, delete the files when you have not booted from this
partition). I also compared the system folder of this partition to any other
bootable CD I could find just to make sure I had everything I needed.

If you boot from the partition after you have deleted unlabelled items, you
will find some folders etc are recreated. Don't worry, as these are
unlabelled and the system will work fine without them. Just remember to
delete them before burning the CD. Booting from this partition at least
once, and running each application, allows the appropriate preference files
to be written.

As I mentioned before, I also installed other software on this disk. My aim
was to make an emergency disk so it has TechTools, Disk Warrior, Retrospect
etc so that I can boot from this CD, fix any problems and then restore my
backups. After I installed the software, I checked what it put into the
system folder, labelled the essential parts and deleted unnecessary items.

> I know that you need to use Toast (I have v4.1.2) and select "Make Bootable"
> on the Data Setup,

Actually, I didn't select this option. Instead, I selected "Files &
Folders". I then clicked on the "Data" button, and then "Add". The first
folder I selected to add to the CD was an empty folder titled with the name
I wanted the CD to be called. Then I selected the System Folder and any
other folders I required.

I have managed to burn this several times (it took a couple of times to
remember to set all of the preferences I needed for my software), and I
didn't end up with any "coffee coasters" (I was using CD-RW).

> I would appreciate any help or words of wisdom.

Sorry for the lengthy "words of wisdom", but I hope this helps.

Someone asked;

There have been several suggestions offered. Here is what works for me.

Using Apple's disk copy program, make an image of the OS9 CD (specify a
read/write image, not read-only). Mount that image on your desktop. Open the
mounted image and copy the Apple CD-ROM extension to the extensions folder
of the System Folder of the mounted image. Remove unwanted files from the
mounted image and add any desired files. Trash the mounted image, but retain
the actual image file (which now will contain the changes made to its
mounted counterpart). Then, use Toast to create a bootable CD from the image
file.

Your new CD will be bootable on various power Macs because it contains the
system folder of the original bootable CD, and contains Apple CD-ROM in its
extensions folder, and has an updated desktop file (created when it was
mounted).

I, too, had wasted several CDs until a member of my user group explained the
above details to me.

Subject: Sound Utility formerly called "D-[something]"

A while back, there was a sound utility called D-Sound, D-Track, Digisound,
or Digitrack, that loaded a list of sounds, assigned each a keyboard
character, and played each whenever it's keyboard character was pressed.
What was its name, and where can I get it?
