Subject: (C) John Madden 2000 & system requirements

Dear Digest readers,
Reading the John Madden 2000 requirements on the box that came with
it I find it says it is compatible with a PowerPC 603e processor
running 150 Mhz. Then technically it should be compatible with a
Powerbook G3 233 which is a faster machine, right? Wrong! The
animation of the plays jumps around like crazy, I end up skipping 30
frames before I get to the next frame, and miss more than half the
action. The cursor jumps away from where you point it to go so you
have absolutely no mouse control. It obviously needs at least a
G3/300 and/or ATI 128 graphics card minimum. The ATI LT Pro that
came with the Powerbook G3/233 and the original iMac both are
obviously too slow to handle this kind of graphics.

Similarly Terminal Velocity's Fly! says it will work on lower
processors, and yet it doesn't.

It is obvious developers are ignoring the fact that there are many
people with G3 processors and ATI LT Pro graphics cards who would
like to play some of these games, but can't since the developers
won't support the graphics card in their machine. Reading the fine
print even further, some of these programs require a minimum of 16MB
of video RAM, even though only desktop Macs support that.
Developers should pay close attention to how the following games were
developed as each has stunning animation with interactivity and do
not require such high end graphics cards:

Maxis Simcity 3000
Simon and Schuster's Douglas Adams Starship Titanic
Cyan's Journeyman Project 3 A Legacy of Time
Playstation games on Virtual Gamestation

Not only that, Apple has built-in to the operating system some
non-graphics card intensive gaming software that could easily be
used. Quicktime VR is really good at virtual reality rendering,
take a look at the freeby game that came with MacOS 8.0, called
Gerbils!
Quicktime with Sorenson compression, can compress video that can be
displayed fullscreen at 1024 x 768 to be 2 minutes equaling a mere
6MB, this while the actual video is recorded at 380 x 240. Look at
some of the movie trailers Apple is showing on their website.

So please write the developers and tell them you want support for
lower end graphics cards. Otherwise Powerbooks will be excluded
until the ATI Rage Mobility card reaches 16MB of VRAM. Which even
with the Pismo, they haven't reached, and even with the iXMicro Road
Rocket it can't be reached.

I am not going to purchase an iMac just so that I can play
games...Somebody please make a better graphics card for the
Powerbook, or a shell that tells these games to use the ATI LT
graphics card on games that require higher graphics card, or I am
going to have wait until I can afford a Powerbook past the Pismo to
play these games.

I don't want to have to revert to a PC laptop to play games either.

Thank you.
Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Hi there

Would it be possible to both talk to (via the Mac microphone) and to see
(via FireWire and a digital camera) another person over Internet.

I've heard of software like Cumulus and SiteCam that let you transfer images
"live" and Inet Phone that let you talk "live" but is there any solution if
you want both. Or is this too much to ask for ?

Subject: Appearance Extension and Desktop Pictures?

An application I'm working on will require either the Desktop Pictures
control panel or the Appearance control panel as well as the Appearance
Manager. All of these are built into Mac OS 8.0 and later, or at least
installed with the System; but Apple says that System versions as far back
as 7.1 can use the Appearance Extension.

Unfortunately they don't tell you where to get it. I'd like to send my
customers with pre-8.0 Systems to a specific URL, but a search on the Tech
Support-Software Updates site didn't show either of these files (Appearance
Extension v1.0.3, and Desktop Pictures). Alternately, they might be bundled
with the program, if that's possible and not too expensive.

Relevant URLs for the information are

but neither explains where to get them from.

I tried Apple's LocalTalk Bridge, but it wasn't usable.

I have been unexpectedly delighted with my iPrint. I installed it in
order to make an old HP DeskWriter and a DEClaser laser printer
available to computers on our newly installed Ethernet. Based on the
name, I was NOT expecting that it would also make LocalTalk computers
available from the Ethernet (file sharing both ways). And all that
without even a single restart! So, I've left the old LocalTalk network
in place because it's still functional. Printing is faster, by the
way, even though it's still going through a slow LocalTalk.

Asante pre-sales support advised me their device wouldn't work if the
LocalTalk was implemented with RJ-11 phone jacks (or equivalents); all
jacks would have to be replaced with a wire directly to the LocalTalk
device, then another wire back from the other side of the device into
the wall and on to the next device. They also said the SAME
limitatioin applied to their competitor, the iPrint. Boy, were they
wrong! I'm a VERY satisfied iPrint customer. Cheers,

Subject: External IDE drives

I have noticed that several mac mail order suppliers offer USB cases
(for about 80 or $90) into which you can buy and install bare IDE drives
and simply plug them into any mac with a USB.

I am planning to take this route and to use the 20+ gig IDE drive as a
removal backup device.

my question is, has any info mac readers taken this route, and what is
their experiences, and also, because of the limited speed of the USB,
would it make any difference whether the large IDE drive i purchase was
a 5400rpm drive or is it worth spending a little more and getting a
7200rpm drive.

any advice, suggestions, or experiences are sincerely appreciated.

thanks in advance

Subject: FM Pro Server 3.0v4 and TCP/IP

Hi y'all,

We are running FileMaker Pro Server 3.0v4 under OS 8.6 on a 7300 (with 256MB of RAM, if you care). Periodically (weekly or so) it stops responding to TCP/IP (although I understand it's really UDP that generates the initial catalog of hosts) and can only be accessed via AppleTalk or IPX.

Some of the stuff I've read seems to suggest that this may have something to do with the DHCP lease issue with 8.6, but other TCP/IP applications on this Mac (e.g. Internet Explorer) work fine. Quitting FMPro Server and re-launching it solves the problem temporarily--no restart is needed.

Since it is only a 7300 I would rather not put OS 9 on it. I suppose we could buy Server 5 but I thought I'd put the question out there: is this a known problem with a known (quick and cheap, I hope) solution?

Many thanks in advance,

Dave Garrett Addison Wesley Longman dave.garrett@awl.com

The best known font utility is TTconverter 1.5, a $10 shareware from
Chris Reed. A few others are available. One freeware one that only goes
from Mac to PC is TTFontConvert 1.0. You can find a listing of various
font utilities at

http://www.eskimo.com/~pristine/font.html

I found this site by using Sherlock to look for TTconverter.

Concerning firewall software, I think the one most often recommended is
IPNetRouter. You can find info and download it at

TTConverter has worked for TrueType fonts from windows to Mac. It claims
to work the other way but I have never tried that.

I've tried Alpha, TexEdit Plus, and BBEdit, but none of them seem to fit the
bill as well as a program called UltraEdit on the PC. Does anyone know
where I can find a great text editor for the Mac that offers the following
features?

* Customizable background and foreground colors
* Customizable syntax highlighting to accommodate languages other that C,
like VBScript commonly used in ASP, JavaScript, PERL, PHP, and anything else
I can provide it with a word list?
*  Customizable font face/size
* Searching a directory and all of it's subdirectories for files containing
a string or regular expression
* Regular expression search and replace
* Open and edit files directly from an FTP server
* Block highlight (rather than line based) for working with columnar data)

I'd be willing to pay $50 for a product that did all of the above if I could
find it. The best solutions is called UltraEdit for the PC at
