Subject: [*] OfficePool 2000 2.0.6 PPC

OfficePool 2000 remains the most comprehensive pool manager for Mac OS on
the
market with new features that make managing a small 10-entry pool or a the
large 1000+ entry pool extremely easy.

We are extremely pleased with this new version of OfficePool, said Paul
Causey, PachydermØs chief software engineer. Now customers can create and
manage NCAA pools with extreme ease and then publish those results onto the
web
with a few clicks of a button.

OfficePool 2000 also has many other features which make managing office
pools a
breeze.

Features in OfficePool 2000 include:

- Fast and easy keyboard entry -- or not (optional button entry is also
available)

- Create a full web site for your pool (Entries, Standings, Brackets, etc.)
with a single click of the mouse (Well, maybe two clicks)

- The one and only QuikPik feature which automatically generates completely
random brackets. Very useful for those addicted to the lottery and also fun
for
those who don't know anything about basketball!

- Limitless* number of entries (we run our 1000+ entry pool and it's very
fast)

- Pick the favorites (higher seeds) for the entire bracket with one
keystroke
(Cmd-F).

- Configure your pool to give bonus points for upsets (two different
options)

- Championship tiebreaker option to break those pesky ties.

Subject: [*] Startup Doubler 2.5.3J - For Faster Start-Ups! (Japanese Version)

This is the Japanese version of the Startup Doubler package.

Startup Doubler: for faster startups!

Startup Doubler makes for quicker startups: Its software acceleration
compensates for sub-optimal disk performance to make extensions, control
panel, the Finder and startup applications load faster.

Save time each time you startup your Mac!
Those seconds spent waiting while your Mac starts add up to a lot of
time. Startup Doubler usually makes startups 20% to 50% faster, depending
on the performance of your startup disk and the number of Extensions,
Control Panels and Startup Items in your System.

Changes in this version:

* Supports Mac OS 9.0.1, 9.0.2 and 9.0.3
* Misc changes

Startup Doubler runs on Mac OS 9.X and previous versions (going back to
System 7.0), and supports multiple extension sets. It is shareware, so
you can try it for free then buy only if you like it.

Registered users of previous versions may upgrade for free.

Subject: [Q] G3 Powerbook won't wake up

My "Wall Street" G3 Powerbook (233MHz) has a problem waking up from sleep.
If it sleeps for more than a few minutes, when I try to wake it up the
screen lights up in gray, but nothing at all is on the display. Sometimes
it will redraw the Finder and its windows, then freeze, showing the clock.
When it does wake up, it can take close to a minute to fill whatever
windows are open with whatever is supposed to be in them. When I restart
after the failure, the computer goes through the lengthy disk repair
process.

I have zapped the PRAM, rebuilt the desktop, trashed the Energy Saver
preferences,, reinstalled OS 8.6 (twice, once doing a clean install) and
now installed OS9.
I've also reset the power manager in accordance with the Apple TIL note.
Still the problem persists.

It doesn't make any difference whether it is on the battery or the adaptor,
when I put it to sleep or when I try to wake it up. And it's not the USB
adaptor problem, because I don't have USB and don't have those extensions
installed.

Starting up with extensions off seemed to solve the problem, so I tested
the extensions and control panels in groups. But the problem did not
replicate during the testing. Since the problem is inconsistent, and the
time the computer must sleep before failing varies, it could take a very
long time to isolate it this way. I've put a list of the extensions and
control panels I'm using at http://www.garella.com/ext.htm

Any help with this much appreciated!

I don't know the brother products very well, but earlier models had
problems with the PS emulation.

However, HP also no longer uses "original Adobe PostScript", but a
clone emulation , so both products may be really the same today. Now,
I would look at the price of the consumables (which gives a "price
per printed page"), and the availability of these consumables near to
your location.

Best wishes, Christian.

The last question first: Using various inexpensive sources, I've paid
anywhere from $9 to $19 for a PlainTalk microphone. I'd think that they go
for about $30 new.
You should not use a Classic Mac microphone with a PlainTalk Mac, nor
the other way around. That's what I've been told, at least. I've never
tried it, but I'd hate to fry my Mac just to check it out.
Small Dog Electronics <http://www.smalldog.com> had a great deal on
Jabra EarPhones, combination earphones/microphones that stuck in your ear
and picked up your voice that way. I'm not sure they still have any.
   Griffin Technologies <http://www.griffintechnology.com/> (hope that's
it!) has a wide range of convertors, one of which is the "NEMic." I'm using
one now with my PowerCenter 132 and a cheap IBM-PC microphone. It sells for
a low enough price so that it was possible to get a microphone and the
NEMic for a little more than a PlainTalk microphone-- and also to have the
ability to switch between a headset mike and a boom mike.

Michael:
Adaptec Toast Deluxe 4.0 comes with an extra program called "Spin Doctor"
that lets you record from LP (or anything else) and filter to reduce vinyl
noise/pops/scratches. It will also automatically guess at where the breaks
between tracks should occur or let you manually do it. When you've got it
ready just tell it to send to Toast and it launches Toast and starts to
burn an audio CD for you.
