Subject: ".mix" Files: How do I open them?

I have received a "Photo Album" consisting of some IBM-formatted Zip
cartridges containing several hundred pictures taken with a digital
camera, all generated on a Windows machine. I am actually able to
retrieve the files from the cartridges and move them to my Mac, but
they all have the suffix ".mix" and none of the programs and
converters I have will open them.

What do I need?

Thanks in advance,

Subject: [*] [FTP] BlackWatch 1.5.2

BlackWatch is a screen saver application that provides the ability to
lock your screen with password protection. It's small, quick, simple,
compatible, and free.

BlackWatch 1.5.2 runs on any Macintosh (or Mac-compatible) computer
capable of running System 7.0 or later. This includes everything from
the Macintosh Plus to the Power Macintosh G4. It is fully compatible
with Mac OS 9.0. The application is distributed as a "fat" binary,
with native code for both 68K and PowerPC machines. It will run in
64K of RAM (128K is recommended).

Changes in version 1.5.2:
  - The Y2K Timer can now count down (or up) to a user-specified date.
  - Added an option to require a password when opening the Preferences
    dialog.
  - Added an option to automatically activate on system sleep.
  - Fixed a bug which could cause a crash after waking up from system
    sleep on a PowerBook.
  - Fixed a bug where unerased bits were sometimes left on the screen
    after moving a digital clock.
  - Fixed a bug where clocks weren't drawn correctly on 1-bit displays
with the "white background" option selected.
  - You can now customize BlackWatch for your organization by adding a
file named "BlackWatch Custom Resources" to the Preferences folder.

Subject: [*] Abstract for JanusNode-104.hqx (formerly 'McPoet')

A JanusNode is a software robot (descended from an earlier, simpler
application called 'McPoet') that is designed for text generation and text
morphing: that is, for writing computer-generated and computer-assisted
poetry and prose. JanusNodes use their own simple language to allow the
text-generation rules (called 'TextDNA') to be completely
user-configurable. It is easy for users to write their own TextDNA even if
they know nothing about programming the Mac. Users can also use the large
set of built-in rules, or the automatic TextDNA-generating function which
can turn ordinary text into TextDNA. The text morphing features include an
automatic version of Tristan Tzara's original Dadaist formula for creating
poetry from text (and many variations on it), an eecummingsfication feature
for imitating the style of the great poet ee cummings, multiple forms of
Markov chaining and much more. JanusNodes are highly user-configurable, and
can be massively expanded by the end-user.

JanusNodes are uncopyrighted and free. They may be freely redistributed.
They require at least 15 megabytes of free disk space, at least 5 megabytes
of available RAM, and a PowerPC processor.

Black and Bleu(tm) is an application that lists 3,340 Macintosh OS error codes with Apple's cryptic explanation included. Detailed explanations and suggestions are included for what you can do about many of these errors. This is the most comprehensive list of Mac OS errors currently available anywhere.

Some features of the current version of Black & Bleu (v1.2.1) are:

     * Error code listing by group, by number and by name.
     * Distinguish between error names with the same number.
     * Search the error database for words, phrases or numbers.
     * Sad Mac codes and explanations.
     * Free analysis of errors that don't have a detailed explanation.
     *  Simple to use interface.
     * Free demo; unlimited use electronic version $34.00 (USD); CDROM version,
        $46.00 (USD)including shipping charges & applicable taxes. 1.2.1 is a
	free upgrade for v1.2 customers.

The Non-technical User explanation is presented in a way that someone without a programming background can understand. New Wine category.
Improved graphics.
Optimized to run exclusively on a Mac.
685 wonderful recipes (no "filler" recipes).
Expandable - more recipes can be added.

CookWare doesn't have a lot of fields to fill-out like other cookbooks.
You will love the speed and ease at which you can enter your own recipes
(thousands are available online - just drag and drop them from your word
processor). Find recipes quickly by name, region, main ingredient,
rating and more! Print single recipes or a menu, even a small index for
quick reference. You'll enjoy the great graphics, easy navigation and
the built-in web page references; you can find books, recipes,
substitutions, groceries, FREE downloadable cooking videos and much
more. If you love good food, this will make a great addition to your
kitchen.

I also have produced the following:

o BarWare: Are you like most people and only have a few bottles in your
bar? Would you like to try something different for a change? BarWare has
775 classic, non traditional.

o SafeDog & SafeCat could save your pet's life! Now you'll be able to
give a printed copy of critical information about your pet to people who
are responsible for him when you're not present.

o CarCare: It features an "At-A-Glance" section where all general
information for the vehicle is kept. An "Invoice" section where all
repair costs are kept. Nice graphics.

o Medical Records ideal if you have an aging parent and would
like to keep their medical records current. You can give printed copies
of the records to all family members in case of an emergency.

What is Wecan English-Spanish Dictionary?

It's a shareware English-Spanish dictionary for Mac users, containing
English words with translations into Spanish. You can find all the entries
that contain any particular English or Spanish word by typing or pasting the
word into the Find box and pressing the Return key. The dictionary collects
all the entries that match what you've entered, and displays the English and
the Spanish side-by-side. You can copy words from the dictionary and paste
them into another document. You can collect English words (with their
Spanish translations) in a separate window and study them together. The user
can easily create additional plug-in dictionaries to supplement the
dictionary provided with the program. You can listen to the English
vocabulary if you want. You can type or copy other English text into a
separate window and the program will read it aloud. (You need to have the
Apple Text-to-Speech software to use these features). You can use the
dictionary in several ways to help you to study grammar. The program allows
you to choose either English or Spanish for the user interface language
(buttons, menus and dialog box). Choose "User Interface Languageˆ" from the
File menu.

Subject: [*] PictureArchive V1.1 Store Images In Searchable Database

PictureArchive V1.1

PictureArchive gives you the ability to store your images in a searchable
database. This database allows you to have 5 categories, where you choose
your own category items. The PictureArchive database just doesnØt show you
the name of files, it will allow you to: 1) filter the list, 2) preview the
images, 3)show the images in their own window, and 4) even has a simple
slide show for you to view your filtered list.

However, PictureArchive doesnØt stop there. PictureArchive will take a
fingerprint of the image and compare that fingerprint with other images in
your database. If the fingerprint is found, it will show you the image you
are adding vs. the image in the database. This will give you an easy way to
prevent duplicate copies of some of your favorite images from finding there
way into your personal archives.

Changes in Version 1.1:
* Ability to Change File Name In Archive
* Ability to Create Series Of Images
* Speed Improvements on the Display of Images

Requires:
* System 7.5 or Later.
* QuickTime 2.5 or Higher

Subject: [*] Startup Doubler 2.5.3 - For Faster Start-Ups!

Startup Doubler: for faster startups!
v2.5.3 March 3rd, 2000

Startup Doubler makes for quicker startups: Its software acceleration
compensates for sub-optimal disk performance to make extensions, control
panel, the Finder and startup applications load faster.

Save time each time you startup your Mac!
Those seconds spent waiting while your Mac starts add up to a lot of
time. Startup Doubler usually makes startups 20% to 50% faster, depending
on the performance of your startup disk and the number of Extensions,
Control Panels and Startup Items in your System.

Version 2.5.3, released today, adds support for Mac OS 9.0.1-9.0.3.

Startup Doubler runs on Mac OS 9.0.3 and previous versions (going back to
System 7.0), and supports multiple extension sets. It is shareware, so
you can try it for free then buy only if you like it. The shareware fee
is $20, registered users of previous versions may upgrade for free.

You may download the latest version of Startup Doubler or get more info

Subject: [*] Submission of BOOM 1.2b2

BOOM 1.2b2 (beta release 2)
This pre-release of BOOM 1.2 expires on April 1, 2000.

What's BOOM?
BOOM is an arcade game in the grand tradition, bringing the
playability and feel of the glorious 8-bit consoles on the Macintosh.
It can be described as "Bomberman meets Doom". Actually, I took the
basic Bomberman idea and dropped it in a "Super-Deformed Doom"
scenario (whatever this means).
If you don't know what Bomberman’ and Doom’ are, definitely you've
never played a computer game. This is the right time to start.

BOOM's main features are:
* Smooth sprite based animations in 256 colors
* 8 different soundtracks and multi-channel sound effects
* Simultaneous two players action
* 80 different levels
* 10 different enemy characters varying in intelligence and weaponry
* Mid-game monsters and a final Super Boss

System Requirements
PowerPC processor;
5.5 MBytes free memory;
Mac OS 7.0.1 or later;
640x480 or larger monitor supporting 256 colors;
Sound Manager 3.0 or later.

Recommended Configuration
Mac OS 8.1 or later;
Sound Manager 3.2 or later;
InputSprocket 1.1 or later.

What's new in BOOM 1.2
     * Completely rewritten in C/C++.
     * Recompiled with the latest updates of the Sprite Animation
Toolkit and the MADLibrary (music drivers).
     * Highly improved all standard application interface elements.
     * The Preferences dialog (formerly called Options) has been
completely redesigned using tab panels.
     * The Preferences dialog is now directly accessible when in pause
(the relevant menu item has been moved to the Edit menu).
     * The "Quick Settings" menu is now called "Options" and is
located on the menubar for easier access.
     * Now the game automatically hides the Control Strip (if active)
on startup and shows it again on quit (and when switching to the
Finder).
     * Added an option for automatically setting the monitor
resolution to 640 x 480 on startup.
     * Added support for external input devices like joysticks and

Switch-It 3.0 - Switch Applications via the Keyboard - *Freeware*

Switch-It is *yet another* keyboard-based application switcher. It is
user-friendly, fast, responsive, reliable, simple yet powerful... ^_^

Requires Mac OS System 7.0 or later (System 7.5 or newer is recommended).
Compatible with Mac OS 8.5 and later.

"What's New since Version 2.1"

* Implemented a set of extra, customizable shortcut keys, used to perform
directly (without displaying any dialog window on the screen) some
often-used actions.

* Allowed certain applications to be excluded from any global actions
involving quitting or hiding all running applications, using a user-defined
exclusion list.

* Implemented more sophisticated "conceal-all" and "display-all" features,
parallel to the "kill-all" feature.

* Extended the "auto-hide switching" feature, which can now be chosen
among two "strategies":
- hide the front application then switch to the selected application, or
- switch to the selected application, then hide all the other applications.

* Added the detection of "pending" applications (applications in the
background which have put a diamond mark next to their name in the
Application system menu, to attract the user's attention). Such
applications are now visually identified in the switching window, and can
also be automatically selected by default.

* Allowed direct selection by keypad numbers among the first ten applications.

Subject: [*] SwitchBack 3.0.1J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the SwitchBack package.

This version of SwitchBack requires System 7.1 or later, MacOS 9 recommended.
A 'Carbonized' version for MacOS X is planned.

What is SwitchBack?

SwitchBack is a file synchronization and backup utility. SwitchBack
makes it easy and safe to synchronize two disks, so that both contain
your most recently updated documents. Simply choose two folders to
compare, and SwitchBack does the rest, quickly and painlessly.

The two folders can reside on the same or different disks, or on two
computers connected by a network, or even over the Internet. You can ask
SwitchBack to tell you in detail what it is doing, or let it go to work,
only advising you when there's a problem.

It has been designed principally for those people with two computers
(especially desktop and PowerBook) who need to ensure that they have
the most recent version of their documents available to them.

TaskMenuBar is a control panel that uses the empty space on the
menu bar to switch and launch applications, and drag-and-drop
files on applications. Because it only uses the menu bar, unlike
other utilities, it will never obscure or be obscured by other windows.

New features in version 1.1.0:
1) Detailed controls over the position, spacing, sorting order and
appearances of the icons on the menu bar.
2) You can add stationary applications by drag and dropping
applications or aliases.
3) You can suppress displaying certain types of apps, such as
control panels.
4) Compatible with Apple's appearance themes and Kaleidoscope.
5) Stationary applications on volumes other than the start-up disk,
including removable media, will appear as the media are mounted.

The version 1.1.2 fixes a few bugs. Please see the What's New file.

Requires System 7.1 or later including OS-8 and 9 with a 68K

In my Preferences folder it's called "CD Remote Programs". If that's not the
case on your machine, then right after adding something to it, open the
Preferences folder window and select "Last Modified" (2nd line from top) and
it should be near the top of the window.

Yeah, I wanted to back mine up too.
ICYDK, there is a shareware out there called "CD Coyote" that will let you play
with this file. For some strange reason, the data is stored in a STR# resource,
not the data fork.
