Subject: [*] MoonMenu 1.2J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the MoonMenu package.

MoonMenu is a system extension that draws the current phase of the moon
in the menubar. The menu, when selected, reveals a textual description
of the moon phase, illumination percentage, the moon's age in days, and
the current lunation number.

MoonMenu also comes with an application that can compute the lunar data
for any given date.

Changes in version 1.2:

* Added minor increment buttons to application.
Hold down option-key for four increments.
* Added "Now" button to application.
* All times are UT/GMT. Even for the menu.
* Fixed Moon descriptor strings.

Subject: [*] Obsidian Trial Size 1.0.2

Obsidian 1.0.2 is military-grade drag 'n drop personal file encryption
WITHOUT PASSWORDS.

Data protection in the full version is provided by TEA, Rijndael or Serpent,
and may not be freely distributed because of U.S. export restrictions. The
full version is $15 shareware payable via Kagi.

Obsidian Trial Size 1.0.2, on the other hand, is an evaluation copy which
has all the features of the full version -- except that it uses a
low-security cipher comparable to PrngXor for demo purposes, and will not
write codebooks larger than 5 Mb. This demo does not expire, and may be
freely distributed if all files remain intact.

Passwords are dead at last. And the concept of key escrow is proven moot.

Subject: [*] Z-Write 1.0

Traditional word processors work in a linear fashion. Text follows text
which follows text. While this is great for a long research paper or a
novel, it makes the process of writing awkward, as notes and
organizational materials are easily lost or must be kept in separate
documents. Z-Write represents an innovative idea in word processing
technology: it allows you to store multiple documents within a single
file! Now you can create separate categories for notes, outlines, quotes,
ideas, character bios, rewrites, etc. Everything's easily available and
convenient, yet you aren't overwhelmed with details. With Z-Write, there
are no limits!

All in all, it compares pretty well. Shared calendars still don't
work correctly (nor did they in 8.2.1), but it's stable. Oh, and it
hasn't been dormant for 5 years. 8.2.1 was released in August 99, the
preceding version the summer before. Not exactly blazing speed, but
not dormancy either. The 8.2.2 client is at
<ftp://ftp.microsoft.com//bussys/exchange/exchange-public/fixes/eng/ex
chg5.5/sp3/mac/> .bin or .hqx formats available.

Subject: External Modem and PowerBook

Hello All,

First of all, thanks to all for the replies to my earlier post
regarding DVDs and PowerBooks; they were all helpful and the utility files
that some people sent will be especially useful. I've received word from
the Apple Store that the PowerBook has just shipped from Taiwan so I'm
looking forward to taking possession next week, but before then another
issue has arisen.

I'm using a Supra Express 56K external modem, basically because it allows
me to receive faxes and use my computer as an answering machine. The new
PowerBooks do not have ports for external modems.

1) Are adapters available to allow non-USB external modems to be plugged
into the machine?
2) Given the price of adapters--I'm already going to purchase a Microtech
USB to SCSI so I can continue using my Zip 250--does it make sense to just
buy a new modem (the Supra USB is priced at around $99)?
3) Does the modem that's built into the PowerBook have voice capabilities
(given the fact that FaxSTF comes with the computer, I tend to think not),
or is there any software out there that would allow me to use it to receive
both faxes and voice messages?

Once again, thanks for any answers. A lot has certainly changed with
PowerBooks since the PB180 that I'm typing this message on, and it's taking
me a while to come back up to speed....

Dewey

I cannot find a way to use AppleScript to turn video mirroring on and off?
Or, for that matter, to control resolution.

This ability would be a big help to me as I use Video Mirroring with my new
Pismo PowerBook, and failing to turn it off before sleeping it and leaving
the office results in a very unhappy 'Book when I wake it up sans external
display. I've scripted the dismounting of external drives, and some
backing up. Adding this to the routine would eliminate the chance of
"cockpit error."

Does anybody have any ideas?
