Subject: [*] Alias It 1.0

Alias It version 1.0
--------------------

Alias It is a $5 shareware utility that enables you to create multi-alias
files, allowing you to open more than one file with a click of the mouse.
You can create aliases of any Macintosh file, similar to the existing
alias feature on the Macintosh OS. The main difference is that Alias It
enables you to store multiple aliases within a single, double clickable
file.

Alias It is a drag and drop utility. You simply drag the file, or group
of files that you want aliased onto the Alias It icon and it creates a
multi-alias file. Once created, you can simply double click it and watch
it open the group of files for you. The files will be opened in the order
that they were added. There is no user interface other than what the
Finder provides.

Two versions of Alias It are provided. A System 7 version using the older
two-dimensional icons, and a System 8 or later version, using the newer
three-dimensional icon set.

Dhammapada--The Essential Dharma version 1.1

The Dhammapada is a collection of 423 Buddhist verses, arranged into 26
chapters by topic. It is said by many to contain the essence of the
Buddha's teachings, and is one of the best-loved works in the Pali Canon.

This application generates a verse of the Dhammapada each time it is
opened, making it a nice addition to the Startup Items folder. In
addition, the entire text of the Dhammapada is available for browsing and
reading in the conventional, linear way. Individual verses and chapters
can be saved as text files and printed from the File menu, and the Edit
menu allows copying of the text. If you encounter any unfamiliar terms,
there is a "Useful Definitions" item under the Apple menu.

Version 1.1 was updated to use Navigation Services

This application is offered as a free gift of Dharma.

Subject: [*] GestLab 1.1 - The ultimate Gestalt Manager tool

GestLab is a tool that allows you to check all Gestalt selectors posted by
Mac OS or by any other piece of software. It is also a database including
information about your system environment. You see not only some technical
infos but also understandable interpretation of most codes (in English).

There are too many features in GestLab to be listed here (a mini doc is
included). You have to know that GestLab user interface needs at least
Appearance Manager 1.0.1 (version found in Mac OS 8.1 and next). So, if your
machine has at least Mac OS 8.1, use GestLab. With older systems, continue
to use the older Gestalt.Appl.

GestLab main goal is to maintain the more exhaustive Gestalt selector
database. When using it, if your configuration is displaying info not yet in
the database (what it is very easy to realize, this info is displayed in
red), don't hesitate to send it to me: I'll analyse it and update the
database for the next release. Your collaboration is essential in this
domain.

Version 1.1 features a database separated from application (database #6
included in this package), direct links to author's Web site to update
database and application, modification of Gestalt values and better theme
support.

Subject: [*] iOrganize 2.5 - A multipurpose organizer : NotePad, Address Book,

iOrganize is a multipurpose application ($15 Shareware), aimed at replacing
the MacOS NotePad. 3 modules are included :

- NotePad : the first module of iOrganize was created to improve on the
original system NotePad. Use iOrganize the same as you would the original
NotePad, but with a lot of new features, as well as a clean and efficient
user interface. Organize your notes in several categories, store email or
web addresses (thanks to its ability to use your Internet applications), and
even import your old NotePad file into iOrganize to make the transition
easy.

- ContactPad : Are you looking for an easy-to-use address book? Then
ContactPad is what you are looking for! With many useful features, such as
Internet links, it allows you to easily store everything you need.

- AliasPad : Organize your files without worrying about their physical
location on your disks. AliasPad tracks your files even if you move or
rename them, in much the same way Finder aliases work. However, AliasPad
lets you store as many aliases as you want in one centralized location,
rather than multiplying countless desktop files! Use it as an application
launcher, a small MP3 play list, or to organize files by their type or
function, without having to regroup them on your disk.
ithout having to regroup them on your disk.

Requirements :
    - PowerPC only
    - MacOS 7.1.2 or +. Takes advantage of MacOS 8 and 9 features.

iOrganize can be freely distributed (including on CD-Roms) as long as the
package remains complete.

Subject: Crash-happy blue-and-white G3

It's been a very long time since I posted anything to this list, and the
fact I'm doing so now indicates the level of frustration I've reached
with the above problem. I'm the proud-ish owner of a refurbished
blue-and-white G3 400/DVD, which replaced my ageing Performa 6200 (which
is clearly where the pride comes in - the leap in speed, though
predictable, is still pretty astounding). The problem is that my new G3
is the most crash-prone machine I've seen since the days of System
7.5.x. It crashes seemingly randomly - eg in the Finder, in the middle
of an FTP transfer with Fetch - and hard, such that half the time you're
not dropped into Macsbug, and the rest of the time you can get back out
to the Finder only to have the machine freeze completely. The machine is
running MacOS 9.0.4 (did a clean install), ATM 4.5.2, AppleScript
1.4.3. It crashes with base extensions, with or without VM, with or
without additional fonts installed besides the ones OS 9 ships with, and
with or without Macsbug (6.6). I have tried taking out the Power PC
Enabler 9.0.4 as some people say it causes problems - that didn't help
though. I was going to say it doesn't crash when I boot from the OS 9
CD, which would indicate an extensions conflict; that said, I have seen
it crash once when booted from the CD - I was opening one of the Readme
files in Simple Text and the machine froze.

Having spent a few hours each day wrestling with the machine, I'm
beginning to wonder if it could be some kind of hardware problem. It
could, I suppose, be a defective DIMM (the machine has 128 Mb of memory
and may have been upgraded at some point), though the memory clearly
passes the tests on startup. The machine contains an Adaptec 2906 SCSI
card and G3 stealth port adapter - it crashes whether or not the
extensions for these are enabled.

There don't appear to be any problems with directory structure (Disk
First Aid doesn't report any - besides, I reformatted the hard drive
with Drive Setup when I got the machine a couple of weeks ago, and have
updated the disk drivers).

Any suggestions on how to get this beast to behave would be appreciated
(except for reverting to 8.6 - I never wanted OS 9, but you simply can't
get hold of an 8.6 installer now; I do have the 8.5 installer/8.6
updater but they don't work on this machine). Thanks.

R.

Two main reasons. Marketing and Marketing.

First: inflation of actual capacity for marketing purposes.

Quantum, for one, uses a 1MB = 1000KB scale when figuring drive
capacity for marketing purposes. The OS, on the other hand, uses 1MB
= 1024KB. So, lets say you have a drive with a raw unformatted
capacity of 10,000 KB. Quantum would describe this as a 10Mb drive
[10,000 / 1000], while the OS sees it as a 9Mb drive [10,000 / 1024].
I believe Quantum does the same with GB; 1GB = 1000MB. This enables
them to market a given drive with a bigger number on the box.

Second: no allowance for format in marketed size.

Drive manufacturers advertise the "unformatted capacity" of their
drives, again to be able to put the largest possible number on the
box. Formatting the disk takes up some space, which further reduces
the amount of space available to store data.

Add to these things the possibly considerable amount of slack space
on the drive caused by a large allocation block size, and a drive
which has a very large unformatted capacity can end up being full
with considerably less data on it than one would expect.

Subject: Using Files on a mac by a PC?

Hi all,

I have a PowerMac acting as a file server for a mixed Mac/Wintel network. Is
it possible for a PC (using NT4) to use files located on a Mac? What
software has to be run on the Mac (Shareware/Freeware) to achieve this?
(I'm now running an ftp server, but it's not very friendly for the PC guys)

TIA
walter
